I wandered into this place completely by accident while simply walking downtown Gas Lamp one night after returning to my hotel. I did not recognize the name Chuck Jones automatically so I walked in as the doors were propped open in welcome and started to browse. I instantly saw a lot of Marvin the Martian, Bugs Bunny stuff and was wondering why they were carrying so much of that theme. The fella working inside greeted me behind the desk and told me a bit about the gallery - that it is owned by the estate/family of Chuck Jones and it has been open and owned there for many years. That he is the artist behind those drawings and many others and they feature several other artists inside the gallery. They have some moderately priced pieces around the front and middle of the gallery and at the back they have a more rare collection of pieces, some of which were upwards of $50k by Chuck Jones himself and other celebrated artists. A neat feature was a Chuck Jones sketch of Wylie Coyote on the back door in marker - with a photo of him doing it live at an event to demonstrate his talent/technique. read more

While scoping out our options to explore along our Trolley Tour, we came across this Gallery. When my son heard about it, the Chuck Jones Gallery made our must see list. He is a huge fan! Reading the reviews ahead of time, we knew that there would be no photography inside and that it may be just a quick look since we obviously were not there to purchase artwork (much of which is in the low thousands). When we arrived my son told of his admiration of Chuck Jones and we assured the gentleman that we knew about no photography being allowed. He was really nice to us and we were able to explore the whole gallery. I did get their card so we have the option to purchase later. They do have smaller prints that seem to start around $100. The artwork included some prints by other artists, too. Namely Charles Schultz, Dr. Seuss, and Fabio Napoleoni. This gallery is definitely a place for cartoon art fans to visit. If I could afford it, we would most definitely purchase from here, as well. They also can ship your art home for you. Definitely check it out, but be respectful about the gallery not allowing pictures being taken inside. There are also copyright issues to consider. Many museums these days don't allow it either, so it isn't any different. We just took a few pictures outside afterwards standing in front of the sign above the gallery door to commemorate our experience. We would both love to return some day. read more

Walking around Gaslamp and didn't expect to find a gallery but what a great surprise! The Chuck Jones gallery takes one back in time to relive those classic cartoons and shows. This time there was also a features collection of Dr. Seuss' painting. The bright colors in the small but beautifully curated space makes it easy to wander and think of the memories. The male employee at the front was very friendly and brought about a relaxing environment. He even gave some insight to say that Dr. Seuss and Chuck Jones were friends who served in the war together. Also, could email awesome photos if wanted. Photos were allowed when asked and smaller prints available throughout the space. It's a place you wouldn't expect but you leave with a smile- a gem among the retail stores! read more

There are a lot of galleries in San Diego, but in my admittedly biased opinion, this one stands above the rest solely through all the Looney Tunes works. Coming inside the first time, I was initially distracted by the amount of Dr. Seuss works. Uh, wrong cartoonist, guys. But as I walked further in, I saw more of what the gallery offered, and why works from Seuss, Peanuts and various comic companies were here. The highlights of the gallery were toward the back, namely an original aimation cell of Baseball Bugs and a piece depicting Daffy and Porky as grzzled detectives. Mike was the gallery director and he was knowedgeable about most of the piece, and attemptedto hep find something that wuld fit the space. Unfortnately, I didn't have the thousans of dollars lying around that I would need to take the pieces I really liked. The front also has a collection of lobby cards available for sale in a more manageable price range. Needless to say, the gallery is a must visit for fans of Chuck's work. read more

While walking around in San Diego - I've never been to the Gaslamp District, so it was really fun to see what was there. It reminds me of a little bit of Abbot Kinney in Venice, CA and a bit of Downtown LA. To have the convention center next door and the PETCO Stadium right there, along with all of the bars and businesses around - it's was new, and yet quite familiar. So, while walking around, I noticed the Chuck Jones Gallery, and I immediately squee'd, and walked a little faster to see what kind of offerings this gallery had. DMTB and I discussed certain pieces that would look great in our home, and considering some of the prices of the art we were looking at, seemed do-able. Of course, in the back of the gallery, was a "life" sized statue of Yoda, and wasn't cheap. Something tells me if we had the money, it would be placed in our future home - prolly something in the foyer. *rolls eyes a bit* :) This is an excellent gallery to not only visit, but if you've got the monies, I would highly recommend picking up something (or 5). :) Oh, and we weren't "bothered" by the employees - we were able to browse around without a problem. read more

An animation gallery. Cute. The artist is the late Chuck Jones. His family own 3 galleries: San Diego, Orange County & Santa Fe. However, Warner Bros owns the copyrights. So no photographs allowed. Also, they are not original works. The reproduction process is called Giclee (ghee-clay) print, which is machine-made and of very high quality made with real paint. The artwork can easily be found online for purchase at ChuckJones.com I love Bugs Bunny playing the piano. The original painting is probably more than half a million dollars ($500,000.00+). This place is simply fabulous. Fun, colorful, familiar with wonderful images from my childhood. All the usual suspects I would expect from the Looney Tunes time of my life. "Monsters are such interesting people"... As well as characters from other places that I would not have expected - some heroes which I quickly ignored and a bunch of Peanuts which always make me hap, hap, happy! The two or 3 gentlemen working there (I cant recall as I had wandered in after two cocktails and they move seamlessly through the space) were most helpful and friendly. There was a limited print on the wall. Just for the hell of it I looked at the price. It was $225. The staff member went in back and found me a smaller version of the print for $150 which was nice. But it was a bit too small for me to actually see these days and if I could afford $150 just now, I'd probably go for the $225 and get what I want. But I was surprised that there were items almost in my budget nonetheless! I would have liked some more depth, 3D, something non-flat. It would just be nice to fill the space horizontally as well as vertically (I sometimes confuse those but you get the drift). Definitely check this place out if you grew up with Bugs, Snoopy and the gang! read more

Currently I'am an animation slash illustration student and a big fan of Chuck Jones since I was a kid. So i just happen to be vacationing in SD and I found out that near my hotel there was a Chuck Jones Gallery. I was so stoked until the Art Nazi curators warned me that we are not allowed to take photos in the gallery (booooo). Come on guys this is for fans to admire, snoody snood's art folk really piss me off. They really ruin everything that art is about, so basically if you want to take a picture with anything you're going to have to buy it. Definitely worth a look if you're in Old Town. The Chuck Jones stuff was cool, but not really something i'm going to hang all over my walls. They also carried a bunch of Markus Pierson paintings, as well as one of his limited edition interactive sculptures (the Nuvolari was the one they had), which if purchased, includes a trip to his ranch in Kansas City. Hey Holybrown, apparently the coyote with the glass of wine is highly in demand, so you most likely have some solid appreciation in that thing already! Separately, Ball 4 found a really nice dreamy tree-house painting from a new painter whose name i forget, but i'll update this once i figure out who it is. I'll admit, it's a strange location for this gallery, amongst all the Mexican restaurants of Old Town, but if you're ever in the neighborhood, definitely stop by. Oh, also, the woman in there was super knowledgeable and super helpful. Gotta love that. read more

Buyers only kind of gallery. Technically you can walk in and look at the art but they pre judge you at the door basically. If it doesn't look like you have cash bursting at the seams then you are a ghost until you check a text or time on your phone, that's when they jump on you about photos in the store. You can take photos, but only selfies. One of the gentlemen working there walked up to my son who had his phone out and very sarcastically and loudly says "how did that photo turn out?!" And began to shake his head ... My son was confused and I just said "instead of telling you no pictures, he decided to be rude and sarcastic". Then to be a pest he made it difficult to browse the work on our own standing two feet behind us at all times. If I order prints it will be from the Costa Mesa location in Orange County. read more

Strolling the streets and popped into this cool joint on a lark. We were immediately greeted and engaged in conversation with Joel. Joel was incredibly attentive and low pressure. He quickly discovered our tastes and we are now proud owners of a Boba Fett wall art. Can't wait until it arrives at home! You will truly love the artwork in here...no matter your age but I think the over 40 crowd will "get it". Chuck Jones is amazing! Illustrator for The Simpsons, Dr. Seuss, Charlie Brown, Warner Bros., etc. etc. We stumbled upon this gallery while wandering down the Gaslamp district. Semi-nervous to walk-in, afraid to break something, but so glad when we did. Gorgeous paintings and cells, some sketches and scuptures. I wanted to buy everything in there. My fave was a set of Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner paintings. I was expecting the staff to be like hawks and hovering over us, but they let us browse without feeling pressured, probably because we just looked like kids. This Gallery really Rocks!!! Loved it! Stumbled upon it and had a nice visit. Filled with whim, magic, and great work. Very spacious and full of really good, Super, Artwork. From paintings to Fun colorful sculptures. From Dr. Seuss, to Peanuts Comics, some Disney, to Old Movie/Film pieces, Comic Characters... Colorful Sculptures...very exciting ; ) but also paintings of wine bottles etc and ballerinas or classical dancers etc. Great! I like the idea of buying a piece of art while on vacation. That does not mean that I necessarily go out of my way to find something. However, if I stumble upon a gallery and see something that visually captures me, then it will automatically gain a second benefit. Not only do I like it, but it is naturally imbued with memories of that trip. You'll get to see multiple things whenever you look at it. While down in San Diego earlier this month, I stumbled upon two such galleries with something that caught my eye. In the end, a piece, here at the Chuck Jones Gallery, won out. I could see it would fit within my place, not so much for the item at the other gallery. This gallery is a step backwards into memories, full of characters who made me smile. Well lit, not overly large, but with a theme that is consistent throughout. The staff did not pressure me in any way, as I wandered about. Maybe because I went back to the same piece multiple times, Geoff came over to ask me if I was interested in something. Yes I was, so he moved the piece into a side room, with showcase light, and let me ponder. That pondering continued through the afternoon, Geoff having emailed me a picture, until the evening came and I pulled the pin. Simple transaction where all the staff seemed happy for me and at that point you can take a picture (holding you over until the real thing arrives). Not trusting myself to carry this home safely, through multiple airports and planes, I chose to have it shipped. Kudos to the company that does their shipping. Very well packaged and crossed the border without any issues. It visited a couple walls in my condo, but I think it has now found its place. read more

I visit the gallery every time I am in town for Comic Con. But this year I broke down and bought not only 1 piece but 3 pieces! Actually...technically 4. Long story short: saw a great piece of art on the SDCC convention floor but honestly the booth personnel were too "used car salesman" like for my taste (not a CJ Gallery booth BTW.) Went back and viewed the piece both Thur and Fri but then on Sat, it was sold. Oh well :/. Then on Sunday I went to the Chuck Jones Gallery and there was my piece (it was an artist proof, not the original canvas with an edition of 100) but also the artist was in house!! So it was fate, right?? So I bought it along with getting a great dedication card and pics with the artist. And then I saw a very cool Star Wars piece that I decided on. Aaaaand then discussed having a commission done for me by that same artist. The artist had JUST been at the gallery the night before. Darn. But my rep contacted him later and got him to write a nice dedication card for me and sent it my way. And then I put in a bid on (and won) a Make A Wish Foundation auction for a Marc Anthony and Kitty piece which I have always loved :) Not only do they have amazing art always on display, they do great events with artists AND have superior customer service. I will always make this a stop when I am in San Diego. read more

I can finally take this off my bookmarks list! As we roamed the gaslamp on Saturday, the unorthodox taxidermy by Theodore Geisel caught my eye. The gallery director, Michael Fiacco, was very inviting and happy to tell us all about every piece and artist. The gallery was bigger than I expected and it was fun to get to the back and see the Star Wars, Peanuts, and DC work. All the collections brought a smile to my face due to the inherent goofiness or nostalgia or a combination of both. So glad that we could spend some time in here. read more

Visited them during Comic-Con 2013. They had partnered up with Samsung to have their phones displayed along with the art work. A great experience with only a single caveat-- NO PHOTOS. They had a display for Marvel and Star Wars with some DC Comics tossed in. As stated by another reviewer they don't allow photos and I was stopped after taking only one. However, there were no signs posted and it was up to the staff to tell each individual that visited to not take photos. Mostly cameras and not cellphones. Also, it seems to not be a hard rule since some in cosplay costumes were allow to take photos with art in the studios and someone made a video. No sooner than I put my 10 year old 2MP camera away a group next to me were snapping away on their iPhones unobstructed but there's no sign so they didn't know. I just left them as they were. The cost of the art can range from $500 and up so I can understand they have to protect their investments but they need to be fair and consistent about it. A beautiful gallery and a true treat to visit. This is just 1 of 3 Chuck Jones galleries, there is another in Orange County California and one in New Mexico as well. Chuck Jones is best known for his contributions to the world of animation, specifically, the Looney Tunes cartoons. He will forever be remembered and adored as the man who brought us some of the best Bugs Bunny, Road Runner, Marvin Martian, and Pepe Le Pew cartoons, among others. But Mr. Jones had a long and impressive career in which he had a hand in creating some 300 animated shorts including How the Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who and Riki Tiki Tavi. Outside of animation Mr. Jones was a prolific fine artist who spent a tremendous amount of his time painting and drawing. The Chuck Jones Galleries allow visitors and collectors to appreciate the many sides of this very talented artist. This is a gallery that's fun for everyone and a great place to introduce children to art appreciation. But make no mistake, the art hanging on the walls of this gallery is top notch, be it animation art, photography or fine art. The staff is friendly, knowledgable and incredibly helpful.
