Such a cute little store on Bainbridge Island. It is really easy to walk here from the ferry, and I highly recommend a visit here, even if you aren't into knitting. This is my favorite store in the quaint town of Bainbridge Island. They have sooo many types and colors of yarns! I feel like a kid in a candy store! I love how they provide finished knitted pieces near each yarn with tags describing how many skeins and needle size needed - it helps to get an idea of how the yarn drapes and feels etc. I could spend hours in here. Quaint store with a nice selection of yarns and teas, but could use a larger selection of yarn from the British Isles. I visited Churchmouse Yarns & Teas with a group of my friends last Saturday. It was an easy walk from the Seattle to Bainbridge Island ferry. Overall yarn selection was nice, and they had a nice selection of notions and patterns as well. Brands tended towards the upscale, though they were running a sale on Manos at the time. However, based upon their selection of teas from Great Britain, I was hoping that they would carry more yarn from Great Britain and Ireland than they do. I was able to find a Donegal tweed, but nothing from Blacker or WYS. read more

My husband was doing the Chili Hilly ride a couple months ago and I decided to explore while on the island and found this gem! I sat for hours taking in the atmosphere. So warm and welcoming! Not my favorite. Everyone raves about it and it's within my metro and so I finally made it over here with my mom. Everything is predictably overpriced. The yarns are pretty, but I would say only 25% are actually soft. John made us really uncomfortable and that reason alone means I don't know that I'll ever go back. It's kind of a "brand name" yarn store in the sense that it's cool to own something from the actual store and have a Churchmouse bag to show that you've been there, but... You're better off going elsewhere to actually buy yarn. read more

I had rode the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island with not much of an agenda other than explore a little bit and stop in Churchmouse Yarns. This store is quaint and beautiful, a yarn lovers dream. I think back to the first time I walked through the doors at the Lion Brand studio in NY and I'm not sure it's a fair comparison since that's only Lion Brand and this is SO much more but it brings that memory to mind. I didn't leave with an enormous purchase since I was only doing carry on and didn't check bags but I did purchase the Rowan Summer Tweed in Blueberry. There were so many gorgeous colors, it was a real toss up between blueberry and sweat pea but I may find myself ordering more very soon. Lovely store, definitely worth a visit if you are on the island. If I were staying in the area longer I'd love to have taken some classes here. read more

Charming store, lovely staff, nice yarns, BUT be VERY careful to watch their pricing. I wanted a bamboo interchangeable needle set for a trip and their price was $100 MORE for the set than the LYS near my house. Cost was $93 at my LYS in Seattle and $187 at Churchmouse. The olive wood was was also $100 more than my LYS so this is an intentional massive markup. I don't mind paying a little more to support local businesses and would have been content with a $20 difference, but this was a disgusting overcharge. I won't be tempted to try them again. read more

Came in with my adorable grandma, who insists on getting her yarn here. This place is a woolen playground! From llama and merino to cashmere and mixed wool, they have many many choices for your next project. Prices for a spool of yarn ranged from about $8 for a basic wool mix to $32 for merino preshrunk. They don't just do yarn though, they also sell tea! Because who doesn't want to drink tea while they knit?! Loose leaf bulk, bags imported from anywhere you can think, even caffeine free options. They had a knitting class going on when I walked in. I melted. All around the store are scarfs, shawls, blankets, sweaters, and cardigans. They have tags on them and look like they are for sale. They are not, they are examples! The tags say which yarn and what knitting patterns were used. Ask an employee and they will help you get set up for your next project. They've even got buttons and beads! Leather, metal, plastic, etc. These people show that knitting is not just for old ladies. Come in for an inspiring time! read more

WONDERFUL group of people. I've ordered from the on-line store several times ... never a problem with an order. I've contacted them through email a couple of times ... always fantastic service. Today, I called and Anna went out of her way to help me find a yarn for finishing a project that would coordinator with the beautiful (but very fragile) yarn I had purchased from Churchmouse for the sweater. I might add Seattle to my list of places to relocate just to have access to the brick and mortar store on a regular basis. read more

I'm a stitch & bitch kinda gal. I do intarsia designs of skulls, make diaper covers with anarchy symbols for friends, and whip up warm hats with devil horns. I tend to stay away from cuteness in all of its forms - so you can imagine my pleasant surprise when I happened upon Churchmouse Yarns & Teas on Bainbridge Island. They have a huge variety of nice yarns - everything from candy-colored eyelash fuzzies to hand-dyed local wools. A feast for anyone put off by the wedding mint palettes of synthetics at the big chain craft purveyors. I found the massive, well stocked variety of quality wood needles to be especially exciting. They even have large size, short length wooden circulars on hand - a real treat. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful, and while it is not cheap, you really do get what you pay for, and everything is well within the expected price range for a serious knitter. Don't ask me about the teas. I didn't look. I think was tangled up in a hank of vegetable-dyed alpaca at the time. read more

I don't knit and don't plan to buy yarn in the near future. That said, I love Churchmouse 1) because of its uber-cuteness, and 2) because they have a wonderful selection of tea - not your Stash, Republic of Tea, Twinings and other supermarket rubbish but real stuff: PG Tips, Yorkshire Gold, Typhoo and so on. It's not the cheapest place to buy tea, and yes, I could buy PG Tips (preferred brand) from the T&C Market across the street or g*d forbid from Amazon.com 6 boxes at a time but when you buy tea at Churchmouse, it's a little like buying your favorite chardonnay at a boutique wine shop. "Oh do you like PG Tips?" "Yes I sort of grew up drinking it." "Have you tried Worcestershire Black Special Blend (or other obscure English brand)?" "Well no I haven't really." "Oh well if you like PG Tips you might like it; it's a little more smooth/mellow/peaty/{insert tea adjective here}" At this point you may be offered a tiny cuplet of fresh brewed tea (no milk, but who am I to complain) to sip while you contemplate whether you should buy any other brand of tea but the one you ventured in expressly to buy. And then they put your shrink-wrapped $4 box of 40 tea bags in a little logoed carry bag and write you a receipt by hand. BY HAND I tell you! It's positively Dickensian. Now if that's not worth the extra 75 cents a box I don't know what is. Superlative retail experience. Worth the ferry trip alone. read more

This is one of my favorite yarn shops. The interior is stylish and comfortable, with a beautiful selection of yarn, patterns, and samples, not to mention notions and other accessories. But there's more: a needlework sections that isnt extensive, but is very well-chosen. There's also a section of world teas, biscuits, and accessories. I'm a big fan of churchmouse's patterns, some of which are free, but they are all easy to follow. The shop is expensive, to be sure, but the quality is very evident and the store staff is pleasant and helpful. I wish it was closer to me but I love to stop by when I'm on Bainbridge. read more

This place is heaven, hell, and knitting porn for me. Heaven because there are so many yummy yarns that want you to touch them. Hell because for the first time in my life I didn't flinch when I picked up a $40+ a hank yarn. And Porn because of all the tempting samples knitted for you to see patterns/yarn samples. Churchmouse had an amazing selection of yarns, but it is very neat organized. Everything from pretty pink fluffy stuff to edgier colors and fibers. The staff is amazing! They will bend over backwards to help you find just the right thing. Never once did I feel pressured, hurried, or that I was asking too many questions. They even offered lunch suggestions and spots on the island to sit outside and knit Churchmouse is well worth the trip and a great way to spend the day! I can't wait to go back. read more

I wish there were 10 stars to rate this retailer! I visted Churchmouse a little over a year ago on a trip home and fell in love! I've constantly talked about the fantastic people, ambiance, service and quality yarns and products with my fab knitting friends. Talked it up so much we planned a 4 day yarn crawl to the area in April of this year 2012. It was wonderful!! All of my friend fell just as much in love with Churchmouse and the area as I had! We're talking about making it an annual event! I cannot rave about this "yarn family" enough. The yarns are exceptional, the quality unparallelled, the service and store impeccable and the owners absolutely lovely! The employees are all so knowledgeable and friendly and willing!! Willing to help, advise, "fetch" etc....and not leave your side if necessary! Until I can get my next Churchmouse fix I will continue to purchase online from them. Beyond the yarns and "in store" patterns and books are the wonderful selections of teas, biscuits and ceramic ware that all plays beautifully into their theme. Not my favorite yarn store. Lots of yarn to choose from assuming you like solid gray, blue, off-white and other neutrals. What earns the two stars is the incredibly snooty, superior attitude of the staff. Amazing considering the poor service. Every time I have gone there it is almost impossible to get someone to take your money. Instead, they are chatting with the regulars or escorting someone around showing them each skein personally because they know that shopper. The last time I went, and I do mean the last time ever, I waited 15 minutes at the register before asking the one visible sales clerk if I might pay her. She announced she was busy (chatting happily with a regular) and would tell someone in the back. She then apologized profusely to the other customer, got the person from the back and then haughtily announced she was going back to her customer now. Person from the back was equally rude telling me I had interrupted her work and what did I need so urgently. To pay you, isn't that what you hope for? Apparently not. While I was still waiting for the person from the back to reorganize the counter before I could pay, the other customer left. Person from the back now announces that the first clerk will now take over because she had work to do. Nearly 40 minutes waiting to pay for one skein of yarn. All the while being treated like I was some sort of problem to be solved. Nope. Never again. If I hadn't needed that particular skein in that dye lot, I would've walked out. read more

The classes are amazing. These ladies are inspirational and encouraging and they don't brook with quitters. They are beyond generous with their talent and knowledge. It is so fun to be a beginner here, sort of like kindergarten all over again. All the new colors and textures. And you make things! And your huzbeau is sweet enough to *proudly* wear the crooked, hole ridden scarves you make!! Someday you actually make something worth wearing.... and you keep it for yourself. This place is adorable and great for picking up gifts. There is a reason it has been open for so long - it is big for everyone in the knitting community and remains a beautiful place. My personal favorite is the tea selection which is varied and great. Again, great for gifts. I've taken some of the classes and enjoyed them all. They have a great intro class for younger people looking to try knitting out. It is expensive, but they have high quality product, and has a similar price point to other knitting stores that offer the same products. read more

They cater to the high end market with beautiful quality fibers and much inspiration. Situated in an artsy and cliche old downtown main street shopping area there is plenty of good food and shops. For the most part, I've had pretty decent experiences here, until I interacted with what I can assume is a new employee (I'd never seen her before and I've been to the store numerous times over the past few years). Not only was she unfriendly, but she acted as though I was lying about trying to redeem my credit (after you have to spend $250 to earn it)! Anywho, that exchange kinda soured me on the whole Churchmouse experience, though I do love their selection of yarn. Check out their sale bins near the pattern section if you want a really good deal and aren't too particular about color. Limited selection of Socks that Rock (no one can ever keep that stuff in stock) for the avid sock knitter! Other than that, their prices are about a $1/skein more expensive than yarn stores over in Seattle, go figure! read more

Occasionally, I'm taken to yarn shops to help offer my opinion of things that will be knitted in our house. I'm typically not a yarn-shop kind of guy, but of all the yarn shops I've been to across the country, Churchmouse is by far my favorite. There is always a pleasant gathering of people inside, knitting circles and the place smells great. I can't always say that about other yarn shops, but Churchmouse is one wonderful little shop. I am not the family yarn expert, but I genuinely like the colors and displays inside the shop. The best of all, they know that husbands and children are often brought to the shop - which is decidedly not our cup o' tea, so they nicely tell us that there's free WIFI. Finally, a way for our son and I to entertain ourselves while my wife shops for yarn. Actually, I take that back. The best is that they treated our son like he was a person. The shopkeeper asked him questions, engaged him in conversation and was generally very sweet to him. (My wife mentioned that she overheard them taking about how polite our son was.) I told my good friend that I was going to a yarn shop because I just started knitting and I am completely infatuated with all things knitting and yarn now. She said, "Oh, Churchmouse?" I responded via text with an intellectual "Uhhh... sure." Immediately, I looked it up on Yelp and sure enough... Churchmouse. Man. Seriously. You knit? You go here. You don't knit? You go here. I finally made it! They are really nice! They are kind of expensive too (not unusual for non-big box crafts stores)! But I bought some soft malabrigo anyway, and their recommendation that I roll it into a ball with their swift was a nice prod, and they spent a thoughtful amount of time helping me pick out a good one for my project while still recommending something that came in a generous amount to be a decent deal. It's also one of those good stores that has swatches and projects that work as examples for how the yarn will look, which I think is super-useful. I love this store and compare all yarn shops to it. There is always something new to see. You can walk in and leave your cares at the door while you get swept away in yummy yarn and delicious little tea trinkets. What a brilliant combo idea for a store. Close proximity to the ferry makes it great to park and shop while waiting for the next float. The staff is SO knowledgable - and no question is too stupid for them to patiently answer. A visit to Churchmouse today left me feeling all cozy and warm, charmed by the helpful and friendly staff and reeling by all the lovely skeins of yarn from delicious kettle dyed wool to variegated chunky acrylics to the finest softest baby yarn. There is a great selection of yarns, all artfully laid out with plenty of samples for you to swoon over and fantasize that one day you'll knit all those lovely items. There was even a Baby Surprise Jacket knitted but not stitched together to see the magic of Zimmerman's design. Churchmouse exceeded my expectations! It is a LOVELY yarn shop. It had ample staff all of whom were friendly without being nosy or overbearing. It had a fabulous selection of quality yarns including things I have not seen in any of the Seattle stores. The store itself is attractive and the yarns are displayed in ways that make you feel like you're in a "fine establishment" as opposed to a "store." Let it be said that indeed the prices at Churchmouse are not exactly competitive with most of the Seattle stores and significantly higher than online pricing. That being said, the shopping experience here was SO wonderful that you'd really have to be a cheap wench to begrudge these folks their few extra bucks. The charming gentleman who completed my transaction was John. He expressed sincere interest in where I was from, what kind of projects I was interested in, etc. He was simply lovely without being nosy or talking too much. Anyways...upon completing my transaction and receiving my restaurant recommendation I made my departure. I browsed a few other shops as I made my way to Nola's for brunch. It was a nice restaurant, good food and service, and I thought it was a funny coincidence that the two women at the next table were talking nothing but gauge swatches and grafting sleeves. Then a funny thing happened. Guess who walks in the restaurant? John. The two women at the next table greeted him by name as if he were a long-time friend. I though for sure he was on his lunch break and was going to spend it doing a little "Stitch and Bitch" with the women-folk. But then he saw me and headed over to my table. Apparently I had left my pattern at the store when I left. Realizing that I had taken the ferry to make my purchase, John wanted to get the pattern to me before I headed home. Wow. I seldom write reviews but the love and care and attention to detail Churchmouse Yarns put into a recent shipment of two small balls of cotton yarn was amazing. I live in Santa Monica, CA, so it is not as if I have a shortage of high-end, luxury retail outlets to compare with, but it has been a long time since I have had such a start-to-finish, all-encompassing shopping experience as my simple yarn order from Churchmouse. Their website is beautiful and oh so easy to navigate, their prices and availability superb, and my two little yarn balls came packaged with lovely beauty and care -- tissue wrapped, tasteful logo sticker applied and a hand written thank you note included. My only complaint about this place is that the name made me think they served tea. Wouldn't that be awesome? A yarn store where you can buy your supplies then sit down and knit while sipping a delicious beverage? Despite my initial disappointment, I love this store. The staff and owners couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Their selection is so freaking gorgeous, and ditto for their free patterns, the knitted versions of which are on display where the relevant yarns are stocked. I'm also not sure whether to mention this (since I want to keep it all for myself and since I'm not sure whether this is standard operating procedure), but my companions and I were offered complementary beverages and snacks. When we got to Bainbridge Island we were looking at a map so one of the locals stopped and asked if we needed any help (the Bainbridge locale seem really super nice). We asked where she recommended to eat and any specific stores we needed to see. She mentioned Churchmouse Yarns & Teas saying she thought it was the sole reason why most people come over to Bainbridge. I'm not sure about all that but I can see the draw! I don't even knit but if I did I would be here all the time. The shop has a billion yarns, books & plenty of staff on hand ready to help the avid knitters. They even have a large table and area for knitting circles. There was a group there when we stopped by and they looked like they were having a wonderful time. They sell already knit jackets, scarves and all other sorts of cute items at what looked like a fair price. The only drawback is their lack of tea selection. I understand tea comes after yarns in the name so it's clearly of lesser importance. Anyway, fun store. read more

Great boutique style yarn store. A lot attention to detail has gone into the presentation of the yarns, and various products in addition to yarn, (needlepoint and tea). I am partial to the higher end yarns, so the pricing did not surprise me. I was happy to see a wide selection of often difficult to find products, such as Habu, Shelter, and Madelainetosh. I've been traveling in Seattle, took a day trip to Bainbridge Island and was SO thrilled to find a lovely, cute, quaint yarn store! My heart leaped with excitement as I am a student knitter and I truly enjoy learning about yarn, knitting and on my cross country journey to Seattle I was getting very frustrated and irritated with myself trying to fix my knitting! I was elated when a knitting teacher here kindly offered to help me fix my mistakes, so nice! I couldn't help but be so happy to see that they have Manos here!!! I was very happy because my LYS in Philadelphia sold Manos which I truly love but that Philadelphia yarn store has since closed and I really love Manos! I didn't buy any of the luscious skeins today BUT they have an online site and I'm definitely planning to check that out and order from them!! They had some beautiful Lorna's Laces which was also gorgeous but I decided on a very handsome steel grey wool which I think I'll use for a winter hat for a relative! Not expensive- about $26 for both skeins, so reasonable! They have the coolest ball winder too which winds skeins with a machine! Definitely going to suggest that to my LYS! So cool! What an adorable yarn shop! I also love tea so I'll check out the teas online. Wish they had stores on the East Coast, lol! read more

Yes! It's bright, colorful, tasteful with a great selection and staff who not only know what they're talking about but would *like* to talk about it with you! The yarn is not cheap, but the price reflects the quality and service you will receive. If you need cheap there is always Jo-Anns. My only real complaint is they are so far away from me, however the lovely ferry ride only adds to the charm of visiting such a delightful place. I always take knitting friends who are visiting Seattle to this store. And they love it as much as I do. read more
