Comfortable, quiet and peaceful hotel with terrific Cuisine…read more We spent three nights here in September. We enjoyed it a lot and would definitely go back. Don't be put off by the approach to the hotel (they seem to be touchy about not calling it an "auberge" even though that is in its name). The suburban neighborhood surrounds the hotel and it's hard to imagine what it will be like inside as you pull into a small driveway with an unassuming entrance where the signage is a bit downscale. But once you are inside, it's another story. You can get a room in the main house or a room in the cottages. We stayed in the cottages and are glad we did - they are more private, and have a patio to sit outside and read and have a drink. They are also a bit bigger. We had a small suite. There was even an espresso machine in the room. The bathrooms are excellent and modern and spacious. The linens are high quality and feel good to the touch. Some of the rooms have a Provençal theme - ask for one of those if you want that. The staff is terrific. They are very friendly and service-oriented. They will help you plan your day if you ask. They are multi lingual. They will attend to special requests or needs. The restaurant is outstanding and is the highlight of the experience. The chef is an artist. I think his name is Mr. Boucher. We took the gastronomic package for two of the nights and are glad we did. It is first class cuisine and service in a beautiful dining room that is comfortable and warm, but elegant. The staff here were plentiful in number and very obliging and attentive. The chef prepares excellent modern cuisine, and the choices are limited - which we liked since they were great choices and the chef puts a lot into each course. Between courses they offer a cheese tray with thirty five cheeses, many local ones. It's all part of a prix-fixe which is decently priced for the level of the cuisine. The spa is not much to get excited about, especially if you've been to nice spas. It feels very dated and worn around the edges. They say they will be doing some renovations soon. Until then, you'll have an indoor pool and a jacuzzi, some dim lights and a shower with a fancy name (chromotherapy) that weirdly changes colors and irritatingly shuts off every 20 seconds. And there is no relaxation room, or tea served, or soft music. The outdoor pool area is very nice, though the season is short. The grounds are pleasant and well-planted. The nice thing about this place is that it is family-owned, not a corporate venue. Actually there are three couples who own it and they all seem to work there including the chef. So you won't have the feeling of a high-powered spa hotel, but more of a personal and intimate experience that feels very authentic.

Castel Mireio is located in the midst of the some of the best wine country in the world in a village with great restaurants and good services and is close to Roman ruins and beautiful, historical perched villages. The restaurant at Castel Mireio offers a lovely breakfast with fresh crossants and delicious coffee on a pretty terrace when warm or the lovely, cozy dining room in winter, and traditional provencal lunches and dinners are available on the premises, as well. Although we weren't thrilled about staying in the area near the train station, CDP was one of the few hotels in town that had a family room, as most of the more charming hotels required that we book 2 rooms or squeeze in a rollaway bed into a small space. Therefore, we were happy to find and book a room with 3 beds at CDP, and even more so when we arrived in Orange late in the evening after a daylong road trip to be greeted by a friendly and welcoming reception. After traveling through many parts of France, we've come to appreciate the hospitality of the inn keepers, which is not to be taken for granted, and especially after an exhausting drive, we were grateful that the owners made every effort to accommodate our needs, like finding a covered parking in their garage for our car. We really appreciated their hospitality and will definitely keep CDP in mind the next time we're in Orange.

The surrounding was most lovely, definitely medieval, artisan, and countryside. But what we really recommend is the cuisine. Do not miss the chef Edward Cristaudo's menus, one 3-course, the other 6-course. Basically you chose the courses you desire from the general menu ... and off you go into the delicious world of Michelin-star like cuisine. Fresh produce, local inspiration and more classical French influences make for a marvelous and most enjoyable meal experience. Wines are most reasonably priced (as is the menu) and are well-discovered amongst the best local producers (there are other, non-regional wines on the menu, though) All of our connoisseur taste buds were delighted. The very competent, friendly and personal service was delightful AND classy, but never pretentious. Just a delightful break from the often stuffy Michelin-star service, without giving up the culinary quality, innovation and taste. We will certainly return to "Le Crillon".

It's steps away from the Pope's Palace and it's right smack by the square. It can be noisy at times but it's where the action seems to be. Our room by European standards was alright but to someone who is used to American hotels, I felt a bit cramped. It seems like the king size bed took up the whole space. The floors are also a bit funky. There are steps within steps in any given floor to get to any of the rooms. The bed comfort was adequate. As someone said before it can use some upgrading. The staff here are also very very helpful. There was a railway strike when we were in France and Michael at the front desk went out of his way to find us alternative transportation since our original train booking was canceled and it seems every other scheduled trains to Marseille (our next destination) was canceled. As to the the breakfast, it was pretty good. We had the usual European cold cuts, fruits and croissants and whole slew of other bread choices. Coffee on the other hand was just bleh. I could never figure out how to use their espresso and cappuccino maker so I made do without. If we are ever in Avignon again, I would come back and stay here again despite the cramp space.
