This is a small "square" lined by restaurants and businesses with trees and benches and midday you can find men out playing a kind of bocce ball of some type. My understanding, according to my guide, is it was built in the early 1600s by the popular Henry IV and named for his son, the then Dauphine of France; a place where regular every day people lived in nice homes, but also could escape the hustle and bustle during the day. It was unusual for the time and it still feels like a little haven today. While I was at Place Dauphine, locals seemed more abundant than tourists and it was still a restful atmosphere. I've heard that there are some places there you can rent and stay while in Paris... I could see myself looking into THAT on my next visit!

Within you will see that everything is monumental: a grand double staircase revolution that leads to the Salons d'Honneur, long forty-four meters, decorated sumptuous frescoes painted at different times and lit by twelve beautiful chandeliers, a room richly decorated Council and having the particularity to own forums in height to accommodate a wide public. There's a daily flower market that also becomes a place where birds and cages are sold on weekends. There were a lot of people checking out the different kinds of birds for sale. The métro stop was handy for me because I was saying on the Île Saint-Lous which is next to Île de la Cité and joined by a pedestrian bridge behind Notre-Dame. This area was also very touristy because of what's there as I would have expected. The lines for Notre-Dame were crazy but since I had been there a couple of times in the past, I didn't bother to try to get in.

We enjoyed a beautiful day in early April at the Chateau. The tour was fascinating and great for…read moreolder kids. It was not crowded, which made it more pleasant. The Marquis de Breteuil came to greet us on our tour and shared some memories of his American grandmother. The gardens are beautiful and we heard so many birds singing. We brought a picnic and spent the day walking around the estate. In all honesty, this was such a better experience than Versailles, which even on a slow day is overwhelming in terms of crowds. I recommend exploring small estates like this where you can take a tour with someone who answers questions and is not rushed. The price for entry at Chateau de Breteuil was very reasonable and parks no was free.
