Our day of wine tasting in Bordeaux started at Chateau La Louvière! We arrived a little past 10 in…read morethe morning, so we were a few minutes late, but luckily they were very accommodating. We started the tour at the tasting room where our tour guide showed us the other châteaux owned by the same owner of Château La Louvière, André Lurton. He then led us outside to the back of the château where he explained its history. The oldest vines in the property date back to the 14th century, and the château was built in the 18th century and recently restored by the current owner in the 1950s. Our friendly guide was very thorough. He explained the whole process of making wine--from hand-picking and sorting the grapes, pressing, fermenting and storing. He showed us the different rooms where all these things happen, particularly the room where all the stainless steel vats are and the cellars where barrels of red and white wines are stored. The winery was busy preparing for the Vin Expo, so there was a lot of activity in one of the barrel rooms. We had two toddlers and 10 adults in our group, and though the toddlers were running around the place, not once did he express any displeasure at them. He was so nice! I think it helps that he's in his early 20s. He also seemed to appreciate all the questions people had. After the tour of the winery, he led us back to the tasting room, and proceeded to pour us wines. We thought we were only going to taste one red and one white, but he actually let us taste 5 different kinds of wine--2 whites (blends of mostly Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon), two reds (blends of 70 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 30 percent Merlot), and a sweet wine (a Sauterne). They were all good, but the château's grand vins (or first wine) were standouts. For 8€ per person, the tasting fee was a great value, and the wines themselves were very reasonable. Some of us bought wines to drink back at the château and some to take back to the States. I would definitely recommend this winery if you're in Bordeaux. The Pessac Léognan appellation is the oldest in the Bordeaux region, so they've been producing wines for a very long time! It was inside a handsome wooden box - tres chic. The tiny, 3.3 hectare Right Bank vineyard is produces wines which are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot in equal portions in each vintage. The vineyard has a terroir that consists of limestone, clay, gravel and sandy soils. The wine is aged in 50% new, French oak barrels for between 12 and 22 months, depending on the quality and character of the vintage. On average, 1,000 cases are produced of Chateau Le Chatelet each year. The estate is currently managed by Alain and Julien Berjal The Berjals will ship their wines to the US and reviewing the order book showed lots of shipments this year to individuals.

Our driver brought us to this quaint, family owned for many generations winery for our tour (grape to bottle to table) and tasting. The tour guide explained first in French, then in English, and did very well! We got a look at the vineyard, the process, the distilling room and storage areas, before heading into the tasting room. All organic!! Very unique, very clean, very nice tour! The tastings must be prescheduled, but worth it!!

We just happened upon this one because it had great reviews on google and it was organic - which to nobody's surprise, is hard to receive that status. It has been a while since I was there so sadly, my review will not be as detailed. Despite it's small size, you get to see how wine started there - starting with where they grow the grapes to what machines sort out the grapes to the large barrels. It's pretty amazing to see how wine is created. And Audrey let us sample some of her favorites while we were there. Overall, a great tour for a great price and we even bought 4 bottles as gifts! It was a wonderful experience and if you have a chance to venture into Bordeaux, you should try a wine from St. Emilion area!

Château Angelus was the final château stop of the wife and my tour of Bordeaux. Tours were by…read moreappointment only and our tour was given to us by one of the château owners, Jean-Bernard Grenié. A Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) château from the Saint-Émilion appellation, Angelus trailed only Château d'Yquem as the most beautiful château we visited. The château itself appeared to be a new construction that was specifically built with traditional/classic touches. The château and the facilities housing the winemaking operations were the perfect blend of state of the art and traditional. The grounds were obviously well maintained and beautiful, as well. Our tour ended with a wonderful tasting of the 2005 Château Angelus. It was sinfully good and capped off our tour of Bordeaux in perfect fashion. If you're on the Right Bank and have the opportunity to tour Château Angelus, take it!

The tasting was 12 euros for their 2007 and 2011's vintage; free if you purchase any wine. Luckily, there was a professional tasting earlier in the day, which led us to also taste their 2009 Vintage as well (70% Merlot, 15% Cab Sauv, and 15% Cab Franc), lucky! The tour brought us to their Vineyard (one of the highest appellation at St Emillion), VAT-room, Cellars, Underground Cellar, and their lovely Tasting room. What stood out on this tour was their Underground Cellars; it was huge since Chateau Beausejour-Becot holds 10% of each vintage that goes back ages! It was dark, cold, a bit eerie, and yet wonderful with all the old wines. Overall, Chateau Beausejour-Becot is a lovely family owned estate. They also provide wine from each of the owners and offer lots of wine that's ready to drink now or to save for a special occasion. PS. Did I mention that they are also part of the 18 Premier Grand Cru of St Emillion; Premier Grand Cru is classified every 10 years, so the next classification will be in 2022. *101 Euros for their 2009 Vintage

The tasting can include either two or four wines. Our group opted to do four tastes which included a choice of either white or rose, followed by three of their reds, including a 100% Merlot, and two different red blends. All four were good, with the final pour, the Château Mauvinon 2021, being our favorite. We had made a reservation ahead of time but it was not very busy when we arrived and could imagine that they might be able to accommodate walk ins. We were also fairly hungry when we arrived and ordered two of their charcuterie boards which were a nice complement to our wine tasting. Overall, a very laid-back tasting in a beautiful environment.

Luckily we came on slow day and there wasnt any tasting going on so they were willing to accomodate us. Since it was just us, it was a very personal tasting experience and we ended up coming home with a couple of bottles. We knew that this was one of the most renouned Chateau's based on the fact that it was mentioned a few times in the TV show Frasier. I did also notice that the airport had a couple of bottles from the estate for sale but didnt look to see the price or which vintage. At the chateau they have a few vintages for sale so depending on your price point you could get certain years that were better than others. I guess will see if we ever open it or decide to sell it later if the price skyrockets.

Luckily while eating at a restaurant for a special dinner, the sommelier informs us that one of the other patrons has left them a bottle of 1986 Chareau Haut Brion and would like to share some with us. Holy moly! I dont know who this patron is but they can just afford to leave Haut Brion laying around? So we split a glass and it's certainly one of the more amazing wines I've ever tried. Earthiness and complexity in both the nose and palate are incredible. Im not sure Im wine educated enough to really describe whats truly going on. What is important is I like it and it's fantastic. I shouldnt get too attached though, it might be cheaper to have a drug habit
