Today it hailed and snowed in Berlin. I was in the mood for comfort and excitement and I found it here. The courtyard is beautiful and sets the mood for what's to come. First the food was delicious, the best Vietnamese food and I come from San Francisco are that has a lot of Vietnamese restaurants and this was an amazing find. This restaurant is brutally ableist, discriminatory, and unkind. Please, never go to here -- at least until its manager is fired and its culture has changed. If you are a person with disabilities, a person who knows or cares about people with disabilities, or even just a person who has ever felt unwell or in pain while dining out, then Chén Chè is NOT a risk you want to take. My review describes my experience, so that you can judge for yourself. My partner and I were taking a family member out for their birthday, carefully scheduled for a Saturday afternoon, right in the middle of Chén Chè's "tea time". At the end of the meal, while two of us waited for my partner to go get cash (the restaurant wasn't accepting cards at the time), I rested my head on the table for a short while. I have suffered from Cluster Headaches for decades, stemming from a childhood head injury. (Look up these sorts of headaches, if you are curious. They are brutally debilitating.) I felt my pain cycle coming on over the course of the meal. I took my usual meds and, as my doctor and others have advised for years, reduced my sensory input in order to reduce the spikes of pain and speed up the work of my medication. That's when the manager came over. In any decent restaurant, he might have asked if everything was ok. He might have expressed concern that there was a problem with the meal or the restaurant environment. He might simply have offered assistance or a glass of water for someone who was clearly suffering. He did NONE of these things. Instead, he complained that we were making the restaurant look bad. (The place was actually mostly empty.) He said my companion should drive me home immediately (we arrived by transit -- it's Berlin, after all) or at least get me out of there. He complained that the way I chose to care for my illness was disturbing to him and somehow causing him harm. When the circumstances were explained, he didn't back off. Quite the opposite, he complained even more. I was appalled. Despite my pain, I got up, followed him across the restaurant and confronted him. I asked him if this is how he usually treated people with disabilities or illness. He repeated his disapproval and expressed neither remorse nor understanding. In my mind I was asking myself: What about someone in a large and cumbersome wheelchair? Or someone with a walker? Or someone without assistive tools but with mobility issues, such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy? Or someone whose disability caused drooling or occasional loud noises? I had heartbreaking and horrifying thoughts of what exactly this man thinks people with disabilities should be doing. Hiding at home? Obviously, he wants them out of his restaurant and out of sight in general. So, please don't go. And please let others know. Too bad too, because I would love to tell you about the tea and the food. But until that man is fired and I know the culture has changed, I would rather see the place just go out of business. read more

good food, friendly staff, but they stopped accepting card payments, and that knocks off one star immediately. The decor is very pretty and it looks so much better during daylight. We'd recommend going there during the day anyways, as it gets too loud quickly in the evening. Sure, the place looks amazing. But the truth is, when you look closer there is much maintenance to be done. Leaking washing basin in the toilet, door handle that need repair, dents at various places, and little pieces of paint missing here and there. The menus were simply dirty and literally had ripped pages. And the service, the following sums it all up: Can I have the 'Che Chen Guest' password? 'No, we don't give the password any more cause customers stay too long'. Every table was booked from 18:00 onward the day I was there. This place is immensely popular. My favorite restaurant in my hometown Berlin. I looove this place! Stumbled upon it per coincidence four years ago, attracted by the little Zen garden in front of its doors. The interior atmosphere is warm, and despite the usual full house feels private. You can sit inside the traditional fine Vietnamese ambient or enjoy your meals in the bamboo garden in the back. Even the bathrooms are an experience. As for the food - I have never seen such a unique and exquisite menu - filled with meals, teas and shakes from Vietnam - outside of NYC. A very popular item is the traditional tea service served in the afternoon only. You can also enjoy a Concubine breakfast on the weekends. There are choices for people with gluten- and lactose intolerance, but make sure to ask the service staff for help. I can recommend the traditional rice platter with kimchi, veggies, broth, and chicken-curry sauce. The sticky rice with mango in coconut milk is a must for dessert. Tea is ok, maybe good. The decorations are very nice and the smell and atmosphere are nice. But the service is quite bad. They're not very friendly and we asked for the tea-hour special before the 3-5pm time was up and they said even though it was before 5pm that it was too late and that there was no more cake. Funnily enough they said afterwards "but you may order some tea and the same pastries and desserts included in the special"....so then why can't we order the tea hour special if everything is there and it's before 5? It's because they wanted to get more money from us. Well they got theirs, we spent less money than if we had been given that teehour special, we're leaving an honest and fair bad review and I won't be recommending chen ché to anyone. The one extra star is for the decorations, ambience, etc. Everything else makes it not worth it. Tea is super overpriced by the way and way not that special. The wild passion fruit one was nice. I loved this place. I was wandering through Berlin searching for outerwear, but found warmth of a different kind. Their sign caught my attention and I strolled through the long walkway into the courtyard. When first entering, the decor caught my attention. And from my seat observing future guests, it looked like many people were new here or all appreciated the decor with wondering eyes. I ordered Bo Bia, Bun Rieu, Chen Che Thach, and Chen Thach Den. The dark herbal jelly tea and spring rolls arrived simultaneously within 5 minutes of ordering. The tea had a sweet yet dark flavor. It had a gelatinous volume to it. It had a nice spicy warmth. I also enjoyed the two lychees whose flesh soaked in the tea's flavor. My favorite part of the Bo Bia was the ground peanut and ginger sauce. Its translucent shell held the crisp veggies and tofu together, but the sauce melded it together. I do live for ginger. The noodle bowl intimidated me when it arrived. I think I inadvertently ordered for two instead of one. Steam crested the the shredded sprouts as orange spice rimmed the dense bowl. The sprouts had a light sandpaper texture, the tomato disintegrated in my mouth, it felt more texture rich than broth rich. Only until I nearly ate all the noodles, vegetables, chicken, and tofu, did I realize the flavor complexity of the broth. And the Chen Che Thach! Amazingly dense dish, topped with sweet and bitter mango. The light pinkish orange body was speckled with black. It was like dairy based jello. So good. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. I wish I discovered this place sooner rather than on my last day in Berlin. And the final test of a great meal.... I literally had to run to my next stop at Volksbar. I'm writing this review for a 'business lunch'. The design of the restaurant brings you to some distant place, far away from Berlin. It is located in the courtyard, you go through the gate, between some oriental trees and into the Vietnamese tea house. It's very pleasant feeling during a busy workday at the office. The decorations inside include live moss at the tables and hanging lights made of pasta. The service is friendly, but somewhat slow. Food is tasty and well priced. Lunch menu is between 6 and 8 Euro. I will probably go back there some other time, mostly because of the atmosphere. read more

This is such a cool place to dine in. I was hit with a strong but aromatic incense smell as soon as I walked in. There is a large lantern hung in the centre of the high ceiling along with many small lanterns scattered throughout the open space. The overall decor and ambiance creates an oriental and tranquil tea house vibe. Not to confuse you with the same as saying this place is quiet because it wasn't when I went, there were a lot of people so obviously it gets kind of noisy, but I do love the incense smell. Food taste the more amazing with it. I've only tried one curry dish here while I was in Berlin, which was not bad. The curry dish is divided into little dishes. I mean it's quite aesthetic. Taste wise it didn't really leave an impression, I just remembered it being good, but keep in mind that there are plenty of very good Vietnamese restaurants in Berlin, especially in the same area. Very nice decor, friendly service and nice drinks, but the rice burger I had really wasn't anything to write mum about. Plenty of cabbage/carrot salad but little meat. It tasted a bit bland. The place smells of incense, and it may take some time for your throat to accommodate and not to feel too dry. Obviously this makes you thirsty. Given the large number of excellent reviews I might just have been unlucky though. Unfortunately a minimum spend also applies if you want to pay by card. Still, a sight of interest worth a visit for a tea or Vietnamese coffee and maybe some sweet pastry. read more

This has been in my bookmarks for quite a while and last weekend I finally went there on a cold and (already) dark autumn sunday afternoon. The interior is just amazing, the lamps are stunning! The menu has (obvs) quite a large selection of teas and main-courses to eat but also desserts and other sweet treats. I went for a shiso and ginger tea and on the menu shiso was described as "the better alternative to mint". Tbh I was a little disappointed it tasted jus like mint and the flavor wasn't very strong either. My friend had a tea with soymilk and a cake with coconut cream. I tried both and it was okay. For me the food and drinks were okay, but you do really pay for the atmosphere which kinda justifies the price as well. This is exactly what i call "4 star place". Lively atmosphere, spacey, though not overwhelming interior and very good food. It has perfect balance between original Vietnamese flavor and European quality. The menu is reach in many smaller plates with tofu, chicken and red meet, few main dishes and bunch of desserts (pannacotta...!). During the day you may also try dim-sums. All of this accompanied by great tea selection and original beer. The service was fast, I would even say too fast. Starters came 5 minutes after completing the order. It was Thursday, so first answer was "we are fully booked" But when we insisted, they did let us in... Prices very reasonable, full 3 course dinner with beer was less than 25 euro per person. read more

After getting our fix of several 'German' meals, we decided to try one of the other ethnicities of restaurants Berlin has to offer. After all, someone wouldn't come to San Francisco and only try American food...right??? So we came here because I saw that they had banh cuon - one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes that's next to impossible to find in the U.S. We had some delicious ginger/lemongrass tea and a few small dishes. Each one was excellent and the atmosphere is beautiful. Felt like being at a nice dining experience in Vietnam. It was also just down the street from where we were staying. I'm interior lover and this place deserves 5 stars only because of the interior, it's so beautiful I can't even describe! I eat pho, of course, I'm an asian soup lover. And it was the best pho I ever tried, it tasted perfectly, spices, meat, veggies, I didn't need to add nothing more, because sometimes I add some soy sauce, but this one is top! I drank some kind of a lemonade/shake and it was delicious. I always have a problem when I order that kind of things, because of sweetness and I don't like sweet drinks, but not with this one it was very refreshing and yummy, I forgot the name but it was kind of a strawberry, lime, chia seeds.... lemonade. I've never experienced such a bad service! The look of this place is the only single quality this place has! From the beginning I felt treated like a second class customer. I was even checking my outfit and my breath, as I was really wondering about the treatment. But apparently that is how it's done there. Maybe it all started when we walked in and waited to be seated. Nobody came up to us, so we started walking towards a table and that was when the waiter appeared and gave us a place. He seemed angry or annoyed with us just walking in, and this was how we were treated throughout our whole time there. When we wanted to pay we were told the card machine is out of order and we can pay cash only. ( later i found out it's broken since at least 2 months) so we were told one of us has to get the money and the other one has to stay. We told them we can leave an ID and this is how it's supposed to be done, and not being taken as a hostage? My evening was destroyed! Been there twice. The food is great and inexpensive. I find it weird however that the most important page in the menu was missing and we had to ask for it (always missing in the English menu, sometimes in the German one). The service could also improve by adding more waiters per shift. read more

After hearing that Berlin has one of the largest Vietnamese populations and that this place was a traditional Vietnamese teahouse, we had to go here. A lovely garden setting welcomed us. The ginger tea was delicious, as were the other small dishes and entrees we ordered. Service was a little slow but we didn't mind it. It was a relaxed laid back evening savoring our food. Food was exceptional and environment was adorable, especially the outside patio. However, our night was left with a sour taste as a result to the service. We weren't given a chance to look over our bill (the waitress was using an electronic device to calculate the cost). This was actually alright! -dessert- jasmine tea tarte - very small, taste ok. but no hint of jasmine flavor and it came in a plastic wrap? - dessert- Pandan cake- ok, but not fresh so they pulled over some coconut milky sauce - cheap wine selling for almost 7 eur a glass, so we ordered a bottle for 22 EUR and saw the cheap wine, with twistoff cap! -jasmine tea, came nicely in a soup bowl but was way too bitter already when i got it. Went there for the second time after I liked my first visit last summer. Unfortunately, the quality has deteriorated significantly. The fresh rolls were not really fresh and the beef was hard as if it had been take from yesterday's leftovers. On top of that the waiter was rude. Also, they won't bring you tap water. I give four stars just because the tea was one of a kind and though I know a lot about asian food culture, I never experienced such nice and creative tea. Interior is very nice but if you sit near the bar it can be dusty! Also staff was divided; some were pretty friendly, some unfriendly and annoyed. I know how it is to work as waiter/waitress with lots of stress but you actually can still be friendly ... UPDATE: I went here again last week and I had to reduce my four stars to three. Why? Because the same waitress was still unfriendly to me! And the restaurant was not crowded at all, just three tables. I can't believe it. Maybe she thought we were some young kids who wouldn't even order drinks or give tip. I still gave though, because the food was not bad, but nothing special! We ordered fried rice with tofu, fried wantan, fried rolls and banh quan. The tofu was nice and my lychee drink too! But seriously, I would not visit again since there are nicer asian places to go. :( read more

Great tasting soups and cocktails. Very nice presentation of food and drinks and great atmosphere. Just know that this isn't a pho place. We went here under the assumption that it was. The noodles used in the soup are like a fideo, or thin spaghetti noodle, not what we are used to seeing in California. I got the tomato based broth soup and my husband got the chicken broth based soup. Both were yummy, I actually preferred his. They do not have WiFi. Even though there is an option that says "Chen Che Guest" they said there is no WiFi for guests. Customer service was okay. Food was good and that's why I'm giving it a 4 star. read more

Berlin Chén Chè Teehaus interior decoration is fantastic. It's light modern Soho style but still has a light Asian touch. Starters Hoi-An Wantan vegetarian dumplings were delicious. Main course composed of smoked tofu with vegetables + coriander and Vietnamese spring roll with peanut sauce were yum too. Chosen dessert black rice with mango + coconut and lady finger banana (Zwergbanane) chocolate cake were unforgettable. We liked to drink cresses-shiso and roses blossom teas. Service was very friendly! We didn't reserve and they immediately proposed us 2 seats on a long table where an unfriendly couple sat and just drank something. The lady didn't want to let me in!! Later we saw a quiet table got free after guests left and very friendly waiter accepted we move there! Atmosphere was friendly relaxing and price meet high quality food.
