This place is excellent if you want to get some first hand information on pipes / cigars tobacco etc. I called in today to get my first (non budget) pipe, having only ever used a cheap one that was recommended to for for trying out. The assistant in the store talked me through what kind of pipes he would personally recommend, suggested a good aromatic tobacco to go with it and signposted me to an Edinburgh Pipe group that get together regularly. Couldn't have been any more helpful if he tried! I had to run out and get some cash, when I got back it was all packed up in a rather cool Cuban Box with some freebies thrown in for extra measure. Couldn't be happier with the level of service and will definitely be calling in again. read more

Not only are the cigars very over Priced they are not kept well in the humidor. I bought 2 partagas Cubans while on vacation and they both came apart while smoking. After sped of the equivalent of $160 USD that should never happen. read more

I'm not a smoker and would quite frankly look ridiculous smoking a cigar, it's not really the look I'm going for but if it was I would definitely head to Cigar Box on High Street. It's quite a pokey little shop but they have loads of cigar and cigar accessories. My dad used to always smoke cigars on special occasions and the smell always made me feel physically sick. I guess nestled in amongst various tat gift shops on the Royal Mile you could buy a couple of cigars as gifts but it would be rather odd buying someone a cuban cigar as a souvenir from Edinburgh. I chuckled when I looked in the window as they have various fashion magazines displayed with suave looking characters with a cheeky cigar pinned behind their ear or puffing away like a fashion conscious chimney. One of the magazines even had Sex and the City's Mr Big puffing away looking cool (and sleazy) as ever. Even though I'm not a smoker I do collect old tea tins and I have the odd cigar box too and I noticed a couple of quite nice ones in the window here, a bit more expensive than the usual ones I get from old flea markets though. read more

I should have gotten around to writing this in the summer of 2012 when I got screwed by the the Cigar Box. Of course it's a tourist trap. Duh! Shame on me! If you enjoy good cigars,....beware! I assumed that given the full retail prices and not being in the US this place would sell authentic cigars. WRONG. I went in and got a Partagas Serie D #4. WHOA. TERRIBLE FAKE! Shame on me for not inspecting the cigar more closely. From the preflight draw (very very tight) to the toasting the foot, to smoking the first quarter, pure pain. The last time I was in Havana I spoke to a distributor and there are so many sophisticated fakes you are well advised to only get your cigars from an authorized Habanos retailer when you are overseas. Of course I sent an irate email to Cigar Box and they didn't respond. Thanks for ruining the last night of my vacation shitheads. If Bill "it tastes good" Clinton ever visits this fair city, it's safe to say that this may be his first stop. They have cigars as far as the eye can see, and while I couldn't consider myself an expert on the hobby, going by the vastrange of variants and prices on offer, I'd say it provides a fairly comprehensive selection for those who like to have a toot on something nice. I've tried cigars a couple of times, and while they give me both a headace and nausea, actually quite like the smell of them. From our trip mid July: I stopped in here to browse for a cigar that I could take back to our hotel for an evening smoke. They have a decent selection for a "wee shop." However, like the yelp review indicates, it is pricey. (Should have looked them up first I suppose.) The staff was friendly enough. I found a cigar in my price range and went to the register. I did not have a cutter and was hoping I could get something cheap there. That was another mistake on my part. The cheapest cutter available was £4! Nothing fancy. Just something to cut my cigar with. When I asked for matches, something I usually get for free the attendant started retrieving a bulk package, like I was going to the grocery store. When I explained that I just needed something for my one cigar, he found a box of very nice matches that cost me 50 pence. 0.5£ for matches for my one cigar, something that is usually free and available in the form of matchbooks. That really tipped me off to what kind of service I was getting. Also, the receipt that I received was barely legible due to ink running out. I left feeling rather taken advantage of. But I had my cigar which I took back and smoked with company who were traveling from the States also. That was nice. However, all things objective, the cigar was not my favorite. Kind of dry for my taste. Nothing terrible, but nothing great either. read more

I have a friend who is obsessed with Hunter S. Thompson. His obsession led to him typing only on a typewriter and deciding to take up cigar smoking, so I tagged along with his trip to the cigar box. I have no idea what cigars really are and why some are so frickin expensive. But this shop seems to stock every type and price of cigar along with our smoking aids. To a cigar lover, this shop is probably like porn and will satisfy all your needs. There was cheap right up to expensive so I imagine the expensive are the really good ones. The Cigar Box is a lovely small shop located right in the heart of Edinburgh's Royal Mile. As expected, the prices are rather high, but the (small) selection of cigars available, comprises the most popular Cuban cigars and pipe tobacco. Visit in the mornings when the city is quieter, the shop is small and more than three people in the shop, and one can barely move. read more

Not being a smoker myself I really had no need to visit the Cigar Box (clue is in the name!) but I generally like shops that are filled to the brim with stuff, and this place looked suitably packed and pokey. Strangely, I actually like the smell of cigars, and the subtle scent in here is of just that. Every cigar possible is in this wee place, along with other smoking paraphernalia which I have no idea why anyone would need. The prices vary from the cheap to the insanely expensive for something you will smoke once, but hey, who am I to deny anyone a guilty pleasure? I am a regular smoker but only smoke cigars on very rare occasions. I went to the Cigar Box this evening and was welcomed by a gentlemen with mid-size curly hair. I told him that I wasnt a cigar smoker but that I would like to get a cigar for the birthday of a friend. I then asked him which kind of flavors did he have in stock for a cigar around £10. His answer was: "If you are not a cigar smoker, I couldn't explain you the different type of flavors". I found it quite rude but kept on asking a couple of other questions but each time the shop assistant was just answering in a very patronising way trying to make me feel dumb. I still got the cigar but I would not recommend this place to anyone and would definitely never go again. read more

I should have checked in advance to see if this shop was a licensed Habanos dealer. Anyhow I visited this last summer and purchased a Partagas Serie D. I should have looked more carefully before buying. I lit up a few days later and was appalled by the taste....then noticed no triple cap and a badly glued band. TOTAL FAKE. I am still pissed off to this day. I sent them a note via email about this, not accusatory, ...who knows, perhaps they don't know how to differentiate real cubans from fakes when inspecting boxes. Or perhaps they can't tell the difference because they have no tastebuds. Anyhow they never got back to me. Leads me to the conclusion that they are hustling tourists! Makes sense though, they are no better than any of the hundred street vendors that sell bad fakes in the Bahamas. Don't buy cigars there! read more

As a cigar smoker, based on other reviews I was anticipating visiting this store as I am a fan of small independent tobacconists. A friend and I visited on a cold day in November and that''s where the problem started, as soon as we entered the store the heater was running full blast and pointing directly at boxes of cigars stowed in a corner. There were two obvious humidors but neither had cigars on display but were holding cigar boxes on which were stood as many bottles of rum as could be fitted into them.. There was an old fashioned glass cabinet fairly full of popular Cuban and Caribbean cigar brands but no sign of a hygrometer that indicated the humidity within the cabinet, the pricing was fairly tipical of an English market retailer, at no time did the man behind the counter speak to us until we thanked him on the way out as we were not prepared to spend our money on cigars that were being displayed in such a dubious way. We may have the quality of the store completely wrong but there was nothing to give an opposite opinion. There is a far better store in Rosé Street where the cigars are kept in a walk in humidor with a running humidifier and the man behind the counter is happy to welcome you and share his knowledge of his stock. read more

Nice stock but appalling customer service. The sales assistant was rude from the start, barely making eye contact and scoffing at my inquiries (I'm an amateur pipe smoker); when confronted on his rudeness he refused to serve me and said he "would make sure my colleagues will refuse to serve you". I did nothing to warrant such treatment but complain about the service. Absolutely shocking. read more
