The stark elevations on the banks of the Ohio River give Cincinnati's art gallery a lofty perch. It's dedicated parking lot is not huge, though one could park a bit down the hill and walk up. The interior space is cavernous; at least for two levels. A small third level houses a couple of rooms but for some won't be worth the steps. The collections are varied and on my visit the most impressive elements were glasswork. Entry is free. As has become typical, there was one paid exhibition, but you could certainly get a fulfilling experience with the regular galleries. Visiting the gallery and the neighboring park is a stark contrast from the city itself but not a far trip at all. read more

I really appreciated the exhibit about the local black and brown faces of the Greater Cincinnati area. As a new person to the city, this was a bit of an introduction to people who are making a difference in the community around them. The exhibit is available for a another week or so. The operating hours make it possible for a visit after work. There's also and gift shop and rec room for children. You can take your children there on a supervised visit. What a special treasure for the Cincinnati community! From its lovely architecture to the exquisite collection, this is a definite stop for any art lover. I visited for a few hours on a Thursday afternoon and easily could have spent another day exploring the galleries. I was especially fond of the Eastern art houses on the ground floor. What are the chances of my most favorite Van Gogh being located here in the US, just a short drive away from home (relatively speaking). Wasn't Two Figures and Undergrowth housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at some point? In any case - I'm so glad to have visited The Cincinnati Art Museum, because it's here!! Nestled next to Eden Park and Krohn Conservatory, this is such a tranquil place for art and park lovers. I was captivated by their Impressionist pieces mainly and their abstract art also stood out. Renior, Gauguin, Monet, Picasso - they're all here!! In retrospect, they did a good job of allowing you to prebook your visit online and you could really spread out in these exhibit halls. Admission is free and you can pay extra for their special exhibit which we passed on, because of time limitations. Parking is free too. Note: There was some minor construction going on in their parking lot but it was no big deal. In a day and age where the saying "World Class" is often overused, this museum is truly World Class. read more

This is one impressive art museum! It's impressive. We paid the extra $5 each to see the Frank Duveneck exhibit. So very worth it. It was so good that most of our time in the Museum was in this exhibit. Along with the special exhibit the Museum is a wonderful collection of great pieces. Without a doubt one of the city's gem. The Art Museum is a great place to spend an afternoon. Cincinnati's history is reflected through its impressive permanent collection, and the rotating special exhibitions have national acclaim. There is the occasional Art After Dark series during which you may purchase libations while enjoying an evening at the museum. After visiting Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, there's no way to convince me that there are better museums than the ones in those cities. P-A has the market taken care of when it comes to art museums. With that being said, other museums in other cities can be fun too. It wasn't until recently that I decided to check for your standard art museum in Cincinnati. I was surprised that there was a standard art museum that I had never heard of so close by. I've been to most of the other museums in Cincinnati and I was surprised when I found this one. To add to that, it's also free! Double score and well played Cincinnati! (Special exhibits can be enjoyed for a small price). I don't think this is the best museum but it does have a lot to offer. I learned quite a few things at this museum. Most museums that are set up like this one... you learn a thing here... you learn a thing around the corner and things are curated in a way that makes you lose interest eventually. This has to be one of the first museums I've visited where I didn't lose interest in anything. Time did start to run short because on that particular day... the agenda was full. I did follow them on Twitter to keep up with upcoming exhibits. I'll easily make the trip back to Cincinnati for this museum again. Maybe it was the day I visited but I noticed something that I've never seen at other museums. Maybe this speaks to the curation. You'll usually visit museums and see people of all ages. There will be people flying solo. People listening to a guided tour. Kids running around. Couples where one person loves art and the other doesn't and the occasional couples where both love art. It was an odd experience because there were plenty of people at the museum that day and they all seemed generally excited about the art and the experience. It was one thing that made the Cincinnati Art Museum standout from other museums I've visited. Many of you Louisville folk make trips to Cincinnati often. Whether your trips are for Ikea, Jungle Jim's, the worst team in NFL football(Go Steelers!), or any of the other things in the Cincinnati area... whatever your reason is, you should start adding this art museum to your list. I'll heavily consider it each time I visit Cincinnati from now on. To conclude... if you live within 300 miles and can make day trips to Cincy, there's no reason not to visit this museum on occasion. read more

Interested in art? This museum conveniently located near downtown and allows you to get a taste of great art. There are three floors with prices ranging from Historic Great Britain to modern art. I love the Cincinnati Art Museum, and I really love the fantastic new entrance. It's super impressive to drive up the hill and see the museum and the Pinocchio sculpture right at the top! Plus the new parking lot is expansive and contains several EV charging spaces, along with the top access to the new Art Climb, with a sculpture next to it. They did an absolutely excellent job with this, and it sets the tone before you even step into the museum. The museum is also free to enter, with the exception of some special exhibits (check the website or ask any of the friendly staff members). On our recent visit, I was particularly interested in seeing the exhibit Galloping Through Dynasties, featuring the history of the horse in Chinese artwork over the ages. It was free because it included a scroll that is rarely permitted outside of its current home in Japan, and it was really neat to see! I appreciate that the museum made it so accessible to visitors. Other highlights of the museum include the architecture, a fantastic permanent collection (shout out to Undergrowth with Two Figures, my personal favorite), and the REC, which is a super fun area for hands-on activities with kids and families! We got to make some neat dance/party accessories and Art Bar designs with what they had on hand. CAM is always worth a visit. I love that museum is free unless you do the special exhibits. The museum is also nice and easy to walk around in during an afternoon. My husband and I went on a Saturday afternoon and had a good time. I was a bit underwhelmed with the art, but I think it's partly because that have a lot of American art and it's just not my favorite. We had an enjoyable visit seeing and learning about new art. I will say the construction outside is ridiculous and had made parking a nightmare. Plus they've added almost a whole row of electric car parking, which is great when the lot isn't under construction. Hopefully they will be fixing that issue soon. read more

Enjoyed my trip to the art museum on a Saturday midday. There was limited parking, but everyone seemed able to find a space with visitors coming and going. I attended for an event, a gallery chat. Essentially, this is a one hour, guided tour of selected pieces with prompted discussion and information. They said typically groups are around 6 people but today there were maybe 20 for the Black Art History chat. I found this to be a really enjoyable event, and it sounds like they have them regularly. The Cincinnati Art Museum is such a treasure! I brought my family here for spring break and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. First it was free, which was such a treat. The grounds are beautiful, but we didn't get a chance to enjoy much of it because of the wet rainy weather. Inside the art is magical. There is art from the Crusades, large pieces of work that cover whole walls, sculptures and sections of walls and just a magnitude of amazing pieces. There are period pieces from before during and after the revolutionary war as well as period pieces from before and after the civil war. There are interactive computer games for kids as well. There is a wonderful restaurant in the museum as well as a gift shop filled with unique items. This is definitely a gem and a museum worth returning to. read more

This makes me so fond of the people connected to/and/or working at the museum. What a gift they've given us, sharing their passion for art over the internet during these challenging days. I went to Cincinnati Art Museum to check out the Artswave exhibit, "Truth and Inspiration, An Artswave Showcase". Some of the exhibits were cool but others of them were...unimpressive. The Museum's partnership with Artswave feels insincere, like they are just going through the motions of including art from diverse persons because that's what they are supposed to do, instead of genuinely being interested in supporting diverse artists. I saw the Hank Willis Thomas exhibit in 2020. I'm sure that choosing to feature his work was a decision that was born from the discussions about race that were sparked from the murder of George Floyd but I'm not complaining. I'd love for the museum to feature more exhibits like this, dynamic and thought provoking. I question who the decision-makers are when it comes to choosing featured artists and exhibits. I know the Cincinnati Art Museum tends to be largely funded with old, white money. If that's the case, my expectations for exhibits featuring thought provoking art on diversity and inclusion are not high for the future. read more

I go to the Cincinnati Art Museum often, but am just now getting around to writing a review. Went last weekend to their biennial "Art In Bloom". There was an Ikebana instructor, Thane Maynard, who is the director of the Cincinnati Zoo and Gardens, gave a talk. Some artists were painting live in the great room and the art was later auctioned off. However, the most impressive thing was that different paintings in the museum were recreated in flowers. You wouldn't believe the creativity shown in all the displays. It was easy to pick my three favorites though. They are always having different exhibits to draw you back in. We are so lucky to have such a high caliber museum right here in Cincinnati. read more

Great exhibits. Shitty parking. This was the main reason for a recent visit to Cincy. To see the Art of Burning Man exhibit before it left. I was really excited about this exhibit, as well as to find out that the museum, including this exhibit, is free. All the times always! We did opt to pay the $10 for the special exhibit, about the kimono and fashion. A very cool exhibit, but maybe not worth the whole $10... Anyway...my only complaint about my visit, I thought there would be ample parking here. Not just surface lots but perhaps a garage. Even if it cost money, I was going to be willing to pay because it was the hottest day of the year and we were already exhausted and heat struck. But there are *only* surface lots. And they aren't all the large. And on this particular day, there was some kind of concert event happening at the amphitheater directly next to the museum. And the lots were overflowing. There were cars parked on the grass and where they shouldn't be. But there was no parking available. Parking staff at the mouth of the parking area made no attempt to stop people or warn them that there was no available parking at the museum, you only got that on the way out. And they told you to find a different parking garage, somewhere...not there. No directions on where it was or how to get there. No help at all. We eventually found some street parking on the other side of the park and had to walk quite a ways to get to the entrance, on the far side of the building, uphill, in the mind-melting heat. It was really frustrating, made even more so because the heat had us (me) really cranky and uncomfortable. Beyond that momentary blah...I absolutely enjoyed my visit here. I really liked how the Burning Man pieces were integrated throughout the whole museum. It provided for an interesting combination of classical art and large-scale contemporary things. There were a few rooms specifically dedicated to the theme as well. My boyfriend was really excited to look for and find the Van Gogh they have. I appreciate that there is a combination of all times and types of art and styles, classical and modern...contemporary and ancient. I love when there is a variety of things to see. And since my fella prefers classical, stuffy, still-life-landscape stuff....and I prefer modern and contemporary work, we both could find things that interest us! I just upgraded my hometown museum membership to Reciprocal, which will allow me entry to the special exhibits that cost extra. So I foresee more day trips to Cincinnati, when the special exhibits sound cool. I am glad I went, and I am so so glad that I could see the Burning Man exhibit before it left. Great museum and you need a full day to get through it along with having lunch at the museum cafe and sitting in the patio or having a picnic. The museum is FREE! And they have great exhibits. When I went they still had the Burning Man exhibit and it was fascinating. Not only did they they have works but many pieces were interactive where you could touch or even immerse yourself in the art. One room had music and video playing on the ceiling with pillows on the ground to lay on and look up at the video projection. After following the Dead for years in and after high school (I had very lax parenting - they were hippies! ), it was definitely my "kind" of experience. Another room was a rotunda with circular bench seating and percussion / brass instruments that played all around you. I liked the room with metal domes that looked like upside-down colanders with lights shining out. The museum (obviously)had permanent exhibits as well and a lot of beautiful and interesting works. For some reason Cincinnati has the MOST portrait paintings of people whose EYES FOLLOW YOU no matter where you go. My grandmother had one of these in her den when I was growning up and it always creeped me out! Why Cincinnati, why are you obsessed with this style of portrait?? Its cool but theres one in the long wood paneled hall that the whole family watches you. Creep factor = Level 10! Pretty sure they come alive and walk the museum at night. FINALLY! I got to the Cincinnati Art Museum. I made it my goal to go before the Burning Man exhibit ended and the exhibit itself and the museum as a whole did not disappoint. I was impressed by the friendliness of the staff, variety of exhibits, and the overall experience. I HIGHLY recommend visiting the Art Museum. Not only is it an immersive cultural experience but even better, it is FREE! One of my favorite things about the museum was that it featured many paintings and artifacts that have a direct connection to Cincinnati. Whether it be a painting of a place in Cincinnati, an artist from Cincinnati, or an artifact from Cincinnati, walking around the museum was a really wonderful way to get to know the city from a different perspective. While I didn't get to go to the special Kimono exhibit, they do allow free admission to special exhibits on Thursdays from 5-8pm so I will be sure to check that out soon! read more

I have been to some of the Western World's greatest museums and galleries: the Ufuzi, the Vatican collection, the Louvre, Revelry, the Guggenheim, MoMA, The Smithsonian, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the art museums of Chicago, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Saint Louis. I have also been to Dali's house which was weird. I live and love in Louisville but I am not a yokel. When I say that Cincinnati's Art Museum impresses me and has a wonderful collection I know a little bit better than some about what that would entail. Other Louisvillians, your Speed Membership is reciprocated at Cincinnati which is a blessing. My most recent trip was with friends to see a special exhibit of French art surrounding Paris in 1900. The exhibit itself was excellent, well-presented, and had a good selection of many different artifacts. It is worth the $12 OR your reciprocal membership from another museum. The museum also offered other special and changing exhibits that were in the free parts of the museum. They had a great selection of artifacts and paintings from all over the world in different time periods. You can't have a bad experience at this museum unless you're one of the hipsters who needs to disagree with people because there is nothing interesting about you; this is especially true on the back of the museum being free. Parking is also free. If you're in Cincinnati and you don't check this out it is on you. You aren't living your best life and you are missing out on something special. read more

Updating my original review from a few years ago, as the museum is under new leadership in the past few years by Cameron Kitchin. The museum has had some great special exhibits in 2019 alone including No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man this summer (the largest attendance for any exhibition ever for the museum) as you could touch and interact with the art while learning about the Art of Burning Man. Paris 1900: City of Entertainment, Kimono: Refashioning Contemporary Style and The Fabric of India to name a few. Plus the museum has incredible permanent collection, Cincinnati Wing, Nancy & David Wolf gallery with glass, ceramics and wood; the 3rd floor contemporary floor. The Rosenthal Education Center with free art activities for children of all ages. The monthly Art After Dark on the last Friday of the month. Can't wait to see what's in store once they finish the new main staircase to make the museum even more welcoming in the Eden Park/Mt. Adams neighborhood in Cincinnati. read more

I went for a special event and only had access to the Dewitt entrance area. So, I cannot report "in full". The drive through Eden Park is a nice prelude to getting to the museum. Check out the fabulous view of Cincinnati when heading up the driveway to the parking lot! The special event included an employee who spoke about textile preservation. We had a special peek at the Dollyer's which was 24 hand made dolls made by Laura Tupin in the late 1800's. Hopefully, her story and the dolls will be on display in the near future. It is "unique" Cincinnati history. I had access to a side room for networking and breakfast. Later, we moved across the hall to the auditorium for the Dollyer presentation. It is a nice venue for small to mid-sized meetings. I would suggest that the museum have the cloth seats of the auditorium steam cleaned. They are very stained and dirty. I hope to go back soon to explore the whole museum. read more

I really love visiting the art museum, because where I am a member of the art museum's society, I can actually get in for free -- once -- to certain exhibits and discounts in the restaurant and the gift shop. It's worth the money to be a member for those reasons and because I also get invited to neat things like after hours parties and things like that at the museum.
