Parking is hard, there is parking but very narrow driveway. Once inside there was nobody else by the time we left I was 5 more tables. The food is very good and tasty, I wish portions where a little bit bigger, you can always get more if you pay extra sides. Stopped for lunch in the off-season. Place was empty but it's that time of year. We had chicken fajitas and a chorizo torta. Everything was fresh and tasty. Chips were crisp and the spicy red salsa was great. Service was a little slow considering how empty it was, but our server was friendly. This little place was recommended to me so I went to try it out. The food was very good, I got a beef burrito and my boyfriend got pork enchiladas. Whatever the sauce/seasoning was, it was delicious! We have passed this place for years and finally my husband and I stopped in for lunch. We regret not coming sooner! We both had Mexican style tacos that are to die for! The al pastor tacos have the perfect amount of enjoyable heat, and the tongue tacos with lime are absolutely amazing. The tongue is cooked perfectly, crispy and tender. It's BYOB... a margarita would have made this meal complete! The atmosphere is laid back and cute, I love the bright orange walls and the colorful flags on the ceiling. The staff seemed to really enjoy their work and were very friI recommend highly and will certainly be returning! Update: my husband and I continue to stop here every chance we can while in town. The food at this spot was actually REALLY good but the servers and hostess were rude and the service was very bad. In an (almost) post covid world, we know that places are short staffed and we need to be extra patient but the service was very lacking. They never checked on our table and the food took a very long time to come. When we walked in, there was only 1 other table (of 2 people) there and It still took 45mins for our appetizer to come out (for a table of 6). We have been spending a week in September down here in CM for over 10 years. We have driven by this little place and kept going past. But I said it's time to try it. We had a late lunch here and ordered the combo special to share. We sat on a nice porch on old boat seats which were comfy. Tortilla chips and a spicy-more than mild red sauce but not killer-well I let the seeds drop off ! The combination special came with 2 chicken enchiladas with verse sauce-again the spice was above mild and a strong taste of vinegar. The chicken was a bit too salty for me ( I have to watch it for health so I'm picky on salty food at restaurants). Also came with 2 chicken flautas the guac was fresh and we could have used more than a little cup. Also a grilled skirt steak rice and refried beans. We LOVED this food! We were super early birds in order to get on the ferry home to DE after a long weekend. Our family loves Mexican but this topped our charts bc it was fresh, authentic and full of flavor! Our preschoolers LOVED the chicken quesadilla and rice. Short Review: Best tasting and most authentic Mexican food in Cape May, hands down. Long Review: We decided to try 5 de Mayo after being disappointed in the limited Mexican options in Cape May, NJ. It took us a year to check it out, though, because we figured it was just another gringo "Mexican" restaurant in a beach town; we've tried Big Wave Burritos in the past, and the salsa tasted like the water that collects at the bottom of trash cans. The building doesn't look like much from the outside (although I am a big fan of the spray-painted stenciled "5 DE MAYO" sign out front), but don't let that fool you. Inside is extremely clean and vibrant. The reclaimed diner seats are super cute and extremely comfortable (and I appreciate the earth-friendly reuse). The complimentary chips come with red salsa (spicy), salsa verde (mild), and beans. All were tasty. I ordered the Chile Relleno and was extremely satisfied. The portion was enough for two meals (I ate half that evening, and the other half for breakfast the next morning). The Mexican tomato sauce that comes with this dish and, I'm assuming, other dishes on the menu is extremely tasty and perfectly seasoned. My dish was not spicy at all, which is fine by me; you can always add more heat with the salsa if you prefer. The rice that accompanies the entrees was also delicious, and nothing is more satisfying to me than well made Mexican rice. Forgetfulness of the server/chef was our only issue, and that wasn't a big deal. I had ordered extra rice to replace the beans that come with the entrees, and my dinner was brought out with beans. No big deal, though. The waitress was EXTREMELY friendly and immediately brought me an extra serving of rice to fix the mistake. We didn't wait long for our food and the server was super nice, so I'd say that minor issue with service wouldn't ruin a reasonable person's meal. We were extremely stuffed, so we ordered a serving of flan to go. It was different than the flan that I'm used to; I am usually served an personal sized flan, but this was a slice taken from a flan on steroids. The beans here are nicely prepared (Frijoles de la hoya and not refritos, slow cooked in a cast iron pot with just enough garlic, onion and ham) and the rice was succulent rather than dry. Their Wet Burrito is amazing. It's a plate-sized burrito stuffed with chicken or pork ( I opted for the chicken) slow cooked in a slightly sweet but indubitably chocolate mole which is also used to cover the burrito. And tucked inside that enormous and enormously satisfying burrito you'll also find the freshest melted queso I've savored in years. Yes, this is the real deal. You should be aware of a couple of quirks, though: While 5inco de Mayo's luncheon menu is entirely Mexican their dinner menu is an odd amalgam of Mexican and Italian dishes. Stick to the Mexican dishes. And keep in mind that you're in one of the Cape's restaurant and entertainment hot-spots here on this strip of Route 109, where cars are making precarious left turns at will and at whim for whale watching trips and visits to The Lobster House. The restaurant's sign is so unobtrusive (read, tiny) that you'll miss it if you blink. Look instead for the antiques mall and garish signs announcing the services of a multi-talented psychic who is also a tarot reader, astrologer and medium in his or her spare time. read more

The parking lot is very small and strange, and at first we weren't even sure it was open (this was the Saturday after Labor Day weekend, and things close seasonally here). But we had the place to ourselves to enjoy delicious food. The waitress immediately brought a large basket of complimentary chips with cups of salsa and salsa verde. We ordered a side of guac, which was chunky and bright. We then ordered enchiladas verdes and a chicken quesadilla and were pleasantly surprised by the portions and the flavors. The quesadilla was packed with marinated chicken, cheese, bell peppers, and onions. The enchiladas were topped with sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, and queso fresco in addition to salsa verse. Both entrees came with refried beans and tasty yellow rice. We couldn't get enough. Cape May has no shortage of delicious Mexican food, and this is definitely worth adding to the rotation. read more

Hands down the worst experience I have ever had from a restaurant. I wanted to order takeout because we have small children and don't like to disturb other customers eating their dinner. The woman who answered the phone wasn't sure they would accommodate a take out order, but they agreed to it. (Later the owner asked why we couldn't just come in and sit down to eat, do I really have to explain myself?) My family ordered takeout: two burritos (entrees), a cheese quesadilla (from the appetizer menu for our young children),and an order of nachos to share. This amounted to a hefty bill just over $55. We were driving and almost the whole way home when they called and said they had forgotten to give us one of the two burritos. We pulled over to the side of the road to check the to go boxes and see what exactly was missing. That's when we saw just how tiny and unappetizing the portions were. (The sides of beans were gray and puréed like gerber baby food consistency and the color of mushrooms...) Not to mention it was already getting cold. We decided to just take it back and ask for a refund, given the appearance, mix up that required us to drive all the way back, and big price tag. I walked in with all the bags of untouched food and asked to just have a refund. The hostess said something (in Spanish ) to another worker. A moment later the manager or restaurant owner (didn't even introduce or identify herself) came out with a huge attitude. I am 8 months pregnant and visibly exhausted. I explained the circumstances of wanting a refund and the manager said "I'm not going to do that, what am I supposed to do with ALL this food I can't serve it to my customers?!" To which I replied that I am a customer and she was willing to serve it to me, and I was unwilling to serve cold small portions to my family who were waiting in the car. The manager said "I hope you don't teach your kids to act like you. There is a god up there and I hope you don't get into heaven for acting like that." (To a pregnant patron for requesting a refund for completely cold and untouched food; I suppose that's a mortal sin now.) She eventually gave me my money back after 10 minutes of belittling me and raising her voice in front of the audience of servers and sparse customers who were sitting down eating. Truly a disgrace to treat people like that. I've worked in restaurants where people have cleared half a plate or more and had food voided off the bill. We went on a Friday night, 8 PM, during prime season, and were seated immediately. We ended up here because all the places on the warer had ridiculous wait times. There is limited parking along the side of the building. Being across from a marina must be convenient, as all the seats are boat chairs, which we found amusing and comfortable. We tried a torta, the fajita burrito, and a combination platter with a taco, a quesadillo, and a chimichanga. The portions were large and all items were delicious. Yeah, like most places to eat in Cape May county his delightfully tacky little shack offers over priced slop not worth the money you would spend on flushing the toilet one you are done whatever culinary abortion you selected from their menu and the servers let sit under the heat lamp for 30 minutes. Second, this place is yet another example of the mediocre slime buckets you get in Cape May and doesn't have a liquor license. This BYOB nonsense is very stupid since the establishments going with this policy still charge nearly as much establishments that sell liquor...I may as well be going to a backyard picnic in a trailer park. Third, our server, a savant at not doing her job, kept refilling other tables baskets of ice cold chips but forgot ours. I am convinced space-time warped around our table and that she was incapable of noticing us. Also, the chips were served cold, the salsa in crappy little ramekins that you couldn't dip the chips in, and serving sizes of dip that would be more appropriate for a child's tea party...actually, I expect even a child would have the brains to realize the dishes needed to be larger. Fourth food was mediocre if you like north eastern Mexican food. I am used to the cooking from the northwest area of Mexico. The food was under spiced as usual and was somewhat bland and uninspired. The most that can be said for it is that it didn't suck and I didn't get food poisoning (which is something I always worry about when eating out in Cape May). Fifth, the service went from awful to WTF very quickly when it took two servers 45 minutes to get everyone our orders. We called three days head and let them know to staff up for a 20 person party, but apparently that was not enough advanced notice. Sixth, the decor...I have seen more tastefully decorated road side bathrooms. The tables were so crowded together that I had to share elbow space with my buddy from work who sat directly behind me and required coordination with in order to get up and use the head. Now the table chairs where cleverly recycled from fishing boats...their only saving grace was that they were pilots chairs and not benches. Now, the decorations on the wall were dollar store quality at best and look like the left overs from a Quinceañera held in a public park. Considering how the decor at one of my favorite places to eat back home were selected to provide a "trailer park themed" eatery and is significantly better decorated than this hovel should tell you something.
