I seen that mouthy and salty character on my social media feed in SF demanding a drink with salt and lime like Lady Tremaine

We all like a Cinderella story whether it's the Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo this last weekend ( hats off) and watching Mr. Irrelevant Brock Purdy drafted last and help the 49ers win the NFC Championship. On the May Fourth be with you today Star Wars movie has Cinderella undertones. Growing up the Piroshki was all around the corner liquor stores in San Francisco especially in the Mission District ( a whole different Cinderella story). The piroshki would be a fast microwaved treat to have during lunch and after school. Over the years I have been very selective when picking up a piroshki from a corner store because they can be very doughy. There is one bakery in San Francisco which has been making a variety of piroshkis for over 70 years. This Russian bakery has both the savory and the sweet . It's located on Balboa street and it's called Cinderella. On a Spring stroll I landed at Cinderella. Inside you can see and smell the delicious bake goods which can be sweet and some salty like some in SF. On the sweet side I enjoy their honey cake but no donuts . On the savory side it's the piroshkis. My favorite is the beef and cheddar piroshki. It wasn't too cheesy like some in SF but the beef was tender and it almost tastes like a smashed burger ( not to be confused with smash burger) all in a soft bun. The are other interesting items on the menu like Pelmeni which are Russian dumplings and Siberian Pie. You can wash it all down with a Matcha Latte ( for Don Juan de la Matcha) or the Kompot drink. There is a planned expansion to the Mission District in with a location at 2937 24th street. This will be a good Cinderella story for all of San Francisco. Go to a place which has a good piroshki "supply" these piroshki buns get baked and some they do "fry" they have other baked goods and food you can "try" like their Grilled Salmon salad and the Cherry Vareniki the Russian Dumpling which has sour cream & sour cherries or the "Siberian Pie" So go on a stroll to "Cinderella" which is the place when it comes to piroshki and baked goods because they got "hella" tasty variations like the Blinchiki with Caviar with more than a bump and you also have one made with it "Nutella" and this bakery sings to me like a Broadway " A capella"

This place doesn't try to impress you--and that's exactly why it does. Walk in, look up at the chalkboard menu, and you already know what you're getting into: Eastern European comfort food, no shortcuts, no unnecessary twists. It feels like a spot that's been doing the same thing for years because it works. I came in mostly curious, but the chicken noodle soup ended up being the centerpiece of the whole visit. This isn't your typical "quick lunch" soup. The broth is the first thing that stands out--clear, golden, and actually layered. You can taste that it's been simmered properly, not just boiled and served. There's depth without heaviness, no greasy film, no artificial salt bomb. Just clean, developed flavor. The noodles lean homemade--slightly irregular, softer than boxed pasta but not mushy. They absorb the broth instead of just sitting in it. The chicken is legit too, not dry, not bland, and not in tiny scraps like a lot of places do. It's cut in pieces that actually make sense, tender but still holding structure. Add in simple vegetables--carrot, maybe a bit of dill--and it all comes together like something you'd get at someone's house, not a commercial kitchen. What's interesting is how "functional" the soup feels. It's comforting, yeah, but also kind of restorative. The kind of thing you'd go for if you're tired, sick, hungover, whatever--it actually feels like it has a purpose beyond just tasting good. Beyond the soup, the rest of the menu follows the same philosophy. I tried a couple additional items and nothing felt like filler. The syrniki, for example--soft, lightly sweet, balanced with sour cream and jam--simple but dialed in. Even the sandwiches and breakfast items look like they're built around real ingredients instead of shortcuts. No overcomplication anywhere. The bakery side is a whole separate problem. You don't plan on getting anything, then suddenly you're holding a box of pastries. Everything looks homemade, slightly imperfect in a good way, and you can tell they're turning product regularly instead of letting it sit. Atmosphere-wise, it's casual, almost understated. Not trendy, not trying to be aesthetic. More like a neighborhood anchor where regulars know exactly what they're coming for. Service matches that--efficient, no nonsense, but not cold. Pricing is another thing worth mentioning. For the quality and portion sizes, it feels fair. You're not paying for branding or hype, just for the food itself--and that's getting rare, especially in San Francisco. Bottom line: this is the kind of place that doesn't rely on marketing because it doesn't need to. If you know, you know. And if you don't--start with the chicken noodle soup. That alone explains everything they're doing right.

May the Borscht Be with You Small Russian café and bakery located in SF's Inner Richmond neighborhood, and has actually been in operation here for nearly 75 years (ca. 1953), as the current owner took it over from the previous OG owners back in 1988. The Good: * Only a short walk from Golden Gate Park, which is how we arrived here. * Friendly service as you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table (if you're dining in) *Outdoor dog-friendly seating *Beers in bottle and small selection available on-tap *Borscht was a satisfying and tasty vegetarian version of this famous Russian soup. It really hit the spot on a cold SF winter day, and their slice of homemade bread that comes with it was a winner. *Blinchikis were both pretty good, but I definitely preferred the mushroom one over the beef, as the flavor was really good. The Meh: * Street parking only (if you can find it) * We weren't impressed with their famous Honey Cake (aka Medovik), as we found the cream layer just a little too cloying with its richness which overpowered the taste of the honey cake. *Interior is very cramped and fills to fast. Make sure you've kinda studied up beforehand on the menu, as its fairly large. Otherwise, you'll definitely feel rushed once you're in there. The Ugly: *Chicken Pelmini were pretty flavorless, and I wouldn't recommend paying extra for the broth because it didn't help. Conclusion: Not sure if I'd come again for lunch, but I'd definitely would like to check out more of their baked goods one day.

The borsch reminded me of indian rasam - perfect for when you might have a sore throat and just need some home comforts. The dumplings were also great and we dipped them in our soup for extra flavor. The server and hosts are friendly and have good recommendations!

Went here after the Hot Chocolate run. I had the granola on Greek yogurt, matcha and I grabbed a croissant with Brie and a meat (I can't remember what protein!) You stand in line, get inside to order, get your coffee/matcha and find a seat. Then staff brings your food out to you. Great place to stop & catch up. I know we're weren't the only runners there. I probably should have ordered some Russian food to try too!

Its not as good anymore and I first came here three years ago.. which was so much better and had way more cream and flakey pastry. Which is a bummer because I really enjoyed coming here. The lines are now really long and theres no anywhere to sit anymore. I think its because we went later in the day but its never been so crowded before.

    8/28/25 FYI. Outdoor seating.

Picked up my daughter from the SF Ferry. We had dinner next door at Sushi Bistro, but my daughter wanted dessert. And when we walked by here and it reminded her of her favorite Russian bakery/cookies. So we decided to get a few items for dessert and breakfast tomorrow. Quality/Quantity - Got a bunch of cookies. Napoleon Cake - My choice, this will go perfect with my Peet's coffee tomorrow morning. Note to self, LISTEN to your daughter when she tells you it will NOT be good the next day as it will be soggy... Decent selection overall, especially for so late in the evening. We got here right before they closed at 7pm. Atmosphere - Most customers are buying to to-go. They do have outside seating, and there were some people there also. Open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. Is 7 your favorite or lucky #...? Plenty of free street parking. Delivery is also available. Service - Counter service today, for us. The lady was not friendly, but also not rude. She was just very direct. Tell her what you want and she will ring it up and get it for you. Price - $12; reasonable prices for high end bakery products. Owner Comment - Congrats on this bakery's success since 1953 and Mike Fishman, the new owner since 2008.

My daughter returned home from college and was hungry, so I offered boiling some frozen dumplings, but she said,"no." Next day, she wanted to go to Cinderella for pelmeni - Russian dumplings w/ beef filling! I had Siberian mushroom pie with clear noodles. We enjoyed our meal while each had one of their fresh juices, super refreshing for recent heatwaves. We couldn't relax and finish while outside, as a wasp (again!) kept saying hello, so much so that we had to pack and go!

Whether it's outdoor dining or takeout in such a small kiosk-like space, Cinderella Bakery & Café was the first Russian eatery since the 1950s. Borscht soup, beef stroganoff, and hand size piroshkis are what I'm most familiar with when it comes to Russian eats. Here in the heart of inner Richmond, a couple of ladies sure made my day in their women owned business. I might try out a nice bowl of borscht soup and any Siberian meat pies on a future visit. During my first visit, I bought two different kinds of piroshkis, one shredded cabbage (white sesame on top) and the ground beef cheddar cheese combo (cheese print on top). My brother hardly liked his piroshki since there's not enough ground beef mixed with the cheddar cheese. As for my shredded cabbage piroshki, hopefully the speck of white stuff was milky cheese, not egg. I couldn't have mine heated before I headed back home. Cinderella Bakery & Café was more than just a local small business; it's another good chance to broaden one's horizons since Russian food still need more attention. For anyone who haven't been to the Richmond district for so long, Cinderella Bakery looks family friendly to palate pleasers.

I was in the mood for soup so this was the closest place minus the Asian choices . It is a nice place I used to go here for their almond croissants but I have to refrain but they were delicious . So this time I went for their herring plate with potatoes. The potatoes were nice and hot and roasted with a side of herring plus a few caper big ones . The potatoes were great the plate looked fabulous I wasn't too impressed with the herring my dad used to marinate his own it was definitely better not much flavor . I also had their babuskas chicken soup it was fine but I didn't feel any love just a plain soup it did have a lot of chicken pieces and pasta it . All their soups including soups here are with a chicken base including the borscht which I have tried in the past I prefer a vegetable base for borscht so that explains that. The service was quick they do have a long line to order . They are very efficient they have to be with so many people . It's kinda of a cute little place with a full bakery attached with many options. They offer sandwiches, soups salads pelemeni and many pastries and Russian fare . I hope they don't move I will definitely miss

Napoleon cake, sour cream cake (honey cake)
    Ruchika D.

Cute bakery with outdoor seating, the weather was nice so it was good to sit outside and eat. Got the sour cream/honey cake and napoleon cake. The sour cream cake was unique but a little drier in the cake layers than I would have liked. It's got almost a cream cheese/mascarpone taste to it which makes sense because of the sour cream, and definitely has a nice honey flavor. The napoleon cake was also good - kind of like soaked puff pastry layers in between layers of a custardy pastry cream. I tried my friend's mashed potatoes as well, which were super buttery and rich and come with a crispy shallot or onion topping and a pickle. Lastly we had a cup of kompot which tasted kind of like a sweeter apple juice with honey.

Such little cute spot. Loved their food. We had borsch and kharcho soup and two piroshkis. Chef's kiss. Soo good. Outside seating was cute. Definitely recommend if you love Russian food. Also their coffees and pastries were amazing too!

Cinderella Bakery & Cafe Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Cinderella Bakery & Cafe

How is the parking for this cafe?

Street parking! Can definitely find a space, but probably also depends on day/time

Are the Pirogi with mushroom and clear noodles vegan? Are the Potato Vareniki without sour cream vegan?

What's the birds milk cake? Are there any nuts in it?

Are any of the sandwiches dairy free?

Vegan sandwich! You can probably order any of the sandwiches without cheese.

What items are gluten-free on the menu?

The borscht and the cabbage rolls will likely be gluten free.

You have a delivery fee. Do I still have to tip the person who delivered to my house ? If I have to, how much?

I think you should tip but I imagine it would have to be no more than for any other delivery - like for GrubHub etc.

    Do they sell cheese babka?

Nope. They do have good Hamantaschen though.

What is the dough for the pies, pierogi, pelmenis, varenikis and piroshkis made of? Is it all-purpose flour or whole wheat or another?

Are their potato piroshki vegan (no dairy and eggs in the dough)?

I don't know exactly how they make their dough, but I bet there's eggs or butter within the layers and crispy croissant like layers of the dough on their piroshkis.

Do the blinchiki contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil?

blinchiki do not contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil. Sesame oil is not a typical ingridient in russian cuisine, nor is the seeds.

While I was visiting friends in the Inner Richmond, we were tempted by the aroma of butter and decided to brave the line to try one of these legendary pastries. While the line stretched halfway down the block, it moved quickly, and we only waited in line for about 15 minutes. The ordering process was efficient, and we were able to pick up our pastries in a couple of minutes once we were at the front of the line. The menu is short and simple, and I decided to try the almond croissant, one of the classics. I enjoyed my croissant when I got home, and immediately noticed how decadent and heavy the pastry was (I recommend splitting it). The outside was very toasted - almost bitter - and the inside of the pastry tasted slightly underbaked. On a more positive note, I appreciated how the almond filling tasted purely of freshly-ground almonds; simple and naturally sweet without the overpowering almond-extract flavor. While this first experience did not quite live up to my expectations, I would still come back to try the other pastries.

It ended up taking us over two hours to get our pastries, and by the time we reached the front, some items had already sold out. This time, we decided to arrive right when the line opened at 7:45am on a Friday. Personally, I'd rather get there early, wait a little over an hour, and have the first pick of pastries than arrive later, wait even longer, and risk missing out on items. We were the third party in line and placed our order around 9:05am. By 9:15am, we had our pastries and drinks. After our first visit, I wasn't completely convinced the wait was worth it. The pastries were good, but the long line and wait time didn't feel justified. This visit, however, may have changed my mind. We ordered: * Madame Lorraine * Chorizo & Tot Croquiche * Morty P * Strawberry Vanilla Bean Bun * Pistachio Cardamom Sugar Croissant * Rocky Road Double Chocolate Cookie * Classic Croissant We also got two drinks: the S'mores Mocha and the Cherry Vanilla Almond Cappuccino. Don't skip their drinks, their specialty coffees are just as creative as their pastries. I really appreciate their rotating menu. Their pastries are always so creative, and I love that they experiment with unique flavor combinations that you don't typically see at a bakery. Some items are definitely more memorable than others, but I enjoy that there's always something new to try. Their pastries are well executed. The croissants are flaky and buttery. This visit, my personal favorite was the Chorizo & Tot Croquiche. Overall, this visit was a much better experience than my first. If you're willing to wait in line, I think it's worth checking out. It was 10/10 delicious!! Do note that they don't heat up the focaccia. Personally, after tasting everything, I'd say the pizza is more worth it than the focaccia "pizzas". The pecan roll was quite addicting too. You can also skip the line if you want to order online on their website and schedule a pick up time, but my gift card didn't work so I just waited in line.
