The Sicily-Rome American cemetery is one of 2 WW II cemeteries in Italy (the other located near…read moreFlorence). It is an easy and cheap 70 minute train ride from Roma Termini. When you arrive in Nettuno you have about a 5 minute walk to get there. A McDonalds is directly across the street from the entrance. Inside the gates they have a visitor center with bathrooms and a small and free museum that chronicles the "Italian" campaign during WW II. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go through. After finishing, you can start walking to the memorial building passing the beautiful fountain and pond. On the way you'll see the grave markers of almost 8,000 American heroes who died in Italy including the invasion of Sicily and subsequent fighting all of the way up to Rome. At the memorial building there are large maps showing the path of the war from Sicily and continuing on up The Boot all of the way to Switzerland and points north. On the other side of the building is an attractive chapel that can be used for services or just to reflect. In between is the statue of Brothers in Arms and behind the building is a well manicured garden with white stars and adorned with beautiful flowers. While the town of Nettuno has wrapped around the exterior of this cemetery, it still is a refuge of quietness and solemnity. The American Battle Monuments Commission does an excellent of managing these overseas cemeteries and memorials. Everything here is maintained at the highest level as it should be.
