This morning after taking a stroll around the town square of Mountain Grove, my brother and I paid…read morea visit to Richard Brothers Supermarket, which is cat-a-corner from we are staying. I guess you can say that the Johnson Brothers were checking out the Richard Brothers. No, not that way, get your head out of the gutter. We heard tell that the bakery held within its display cases a certain local delicacy that had to be seen, and tasted, to be believed. So we wound our way through the 1960 style market until we found ourselves standing at our destination. Upon looking in the display case, we saw what we came for. The ultimate of ultimates, the belief beyond beliefs, the glory of glorious, the one and only, glazed crosaunts. They were lovingly splayed on two shelves of trays, patiently awaiting these two customers in particular, to make a monetary transaction, and take them home. Thus it was so. A funny thing, there was a list on the outer case stating what kind of pastries that were offered for sale. We studied it trying to find the special name given to these wonders, (as we didn't want to look like a couple tourists), but couldn't find one. We did see a generic crosaunt, but thought, nah, that couldn't be it. So I asked the nice attendant behind the counter "what do you call these things"? She looked at me, like, huh? Why, these are crosaunts she said. Cover blown. The crosaunt was huge! Far bigger than ordinary. My brother said that back at the old home place, they would call these "bigerns", (translation big ones....with a southern twang) where he comes up with this stuff I don't know. Of course the "bigerns" were melt in your mouth delicious. Like eating flavored air. I highly recommend picking up a few, or a dozen, for their shelf life is almost non existent. The trays barely have time to get sticky. I should give them more than 3 stars, but for lack of promotion, the Richard Brothers are leaving a lot of money on the table. Something the Johnson Brothers would never allow to happen. Properly promoted, the lone nameless crosaunt, could revitalize the economy of this sleepy town square. For instance: Mountain Grove, home of the BIGERN! Hey Mr.. Richard Brothers, If you bake it, they will come.

Stop on by and refresh your supply here! BUT don't trust Apple Maps on this one, it will take you over a mile in the wrong direction. It's right off the main road and if you're navigating here, using Google Maps is a must!!

This is a small local grocery store that is every bit the equal of the larger grocery chains…read more Whether you need fruits or vegetables, fresh meats, or baked, bulk, or frozen goods, you can find it all here for a cheap price. There's even a section for individual drinks by the front door. The store was recently remodeled in the past few years, and the entrance looks great. There's always parking available, and the store can be easily reached through the main driving loop throughout town. This location is always clean and uncrowded, and the employees are helpful if you ever need anything. Town and Country is definitely a hidden gem, and well worth the trip if you ever need to drop by.

So we opened up Google, and found the Hub Package Store, on one of the backstreets of Mountain Grove. I wouldn't say that it was in the seedy part of town, if there is such a place in this hamlet of the Ozarks. It's actually located down the road from The Richard Brothers Supermarket (see related review on their Biggerns). As we approached the doors of the Hub, we found that they were locked. There was a sign stating that in-store purchases will resume on the 28th of May, just in time for the huge Memorial day weekend! How convenient. But not for us. We were directed to pull up to the take out window. Hmmm, a take out window, at a liquor store, and we in a car. Something doesn't sound right about that. Now here's the problem with that set up. Have you ever gone to McDonald's and ordered fries with your burger? You order 2 bags of fries, cause you know that the minute they hand those things through the window, you're into them, and before you can make it a mile down the road, one of those orders of fries is gone. So you can see our dilemma. Anyway, we cruise around back and come to this smallish barred window. A nice lady slides the window open and we exchange pleasantries. I explain that I'm from California, and I've never heard of a package store, let alone a liquor store drive up window. Back where I come from I tell her, you can buy booze at the local middle school! Of course I'm being facetious, you have to get it at a high school, but you can see that I am out of my element in this part of the country. I told the nice lady that we'd like a pint of whiskey for Phil, an a 6 pak of Miller (no chance in hell that they'd have Genuine Draft, my daughter has to special order it in Franklin TN, so it would be highly unlikely that a small town in Missouri would carry it.) I told her no need to bag it, we'll drink it here. After I apologized for that old joke, the Hub lady filled our order. As we were about to leave, I thanked her, but mentioned, I do have a serious question for you. She said "of course Honey" so I asked, since you have to pass all the liquor through this window, how do you shove the kegs through? At that point she was done with this Californian. Quick Tip: Beers aren't fries, so save the fries till you get home. Did I mention that the Police station is just up the street?

Ava Drug is a Walgreens. There are Walgreens products and Walgreens sales…read more I've always found great service. I get friendly directions to products and have even been escorted to where I was seeking. They have everything you'd expect a drug store to have, plus extra things like food, community sweatshirts, and toys. They rock during holiday times! More snacks will appear than you could want to eat. If you buy vitamins or supplements YOU MUST COME HERE. There's always some sale: buy-one get one free or 50% off of different vitamins and supplements.  I've saved a ton of money over that store down the road. They also have a good, free rewards program that is even tied to the pharmacy. What you spend adds up to credit you can take off future purchases.
