I'm writing this as a Yelp review because my girlfriend had a very frustrating experience with this bank and I think other people should know about it. The bank accepted her check deposit and gave her multiple different dates for when the funds would be available. She was told one date at first, then later given another, which caused a lot of confusion, stress, and financial hardship. Even after repeated questions, the bank never gave a clear explanation for the hold or why the release date kept changing. This caused real problems, including difficulty meeting financial obligations. Customers should be able to count on accurate information, timely access to legitimate funds, and clear communication from their bank. Getting conflicting information about a deposit without a proper explanation is unacceptable. What makes this even more disappointing is that my girlfriend has served this country, and she still was treated this way. That is not the kind of customer service anyone should expect from a financial institution handling people's money. This bank is shady with their customer service. The customer service agent couldn't explain why there was a discrepancy on my account and suddenly I was "disconnected." I called back and said I was disconnected (no apology). Went into same robotic spiel (even tho it was the same person). I asked the same question 5 different ways to get them to try to understand the discrepancy I was seeing (basic math). They kept responding robotically with the same response over and over that avoided answering my question and dealing with the numbers I was pointing out. They literally could not explain why I'm being charged an extra $100 month fee. Then, they effectively hung up on me by ending the call saying "they'll call me back later." I was insistent on getting an answer but professional and polite. What 800 number agent says they'll call you back later? And then obviously don't. Similar unhelpful experiences have happened to me multiple times I've attempted to call customer service over the years. There is literally no one helpful to call. If you have to call bc you don't live in Rhode Island where they're based, there will be no problem solving. If I didn't have a loan with this utterly unprofessional and zero customer service bank, I would never deal with them. I don't know what I'm going to do about this extra money they're billing me for each month to sergive my loan. This is shady! read more

I recently missed a single $34 bill that was scheduled as an automatic payment through Citizens Pay. The transaction failed to process, and I wasn't notified until Citizens Bank reported it to the credit bureaus--resulting in a significant drop in my credit score. As soon as I became aware of the issue, I immediately made the payment in full and contacted Citizens to request a one-time "good faith" removal of the negative reporting. This is a common courtesy many lenders extend to customers with otherwise perfect payment histories. I've never missed a payment before or since. The amount was minor, and the issue was corrected immediately. Despite this, Citizens declined my goodwill request and chose to let the negative report stand--one that could impact my credit for the next seven years. I'm asking Citizens to reconsider this decision, extend a one-time gesture of understanding, and remove the derogatory mark from my credit report. I am active duty military, and this single event does not reflect my commitment to financial responsibility. My review of Citizens Bank isn't a good one. I just made a $100 cash deposit to cover an expense that posted on my account. The ATM took my money, gave me a receipt for the deposit but never put the money in my account. I spoke with the manager who was very nice however, I have to go through this ridiculous process of calls and paperwork to get my hard earned money back. I've already had numerous issues with their system here at Citizens Bank. The workers are great but their banking system is simply terrible and unfair. read more

I opened 2 Citizens accounts & tried to transfer money in...transaction flagged & transfer function locked until I called fraud # and verified my identity...THIS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES!! Then entire on-line account locked. After spending an hour with branch officer, told I needed to change my username because it was too close to my actual name to unlock it. Then tried using Zelle. After 2 successful transfers, you guessed it, next one blocked as potential fraud. Called fraud# and was told it wasn't Citizen's issue...I should check with my other bank. However, lo and behold, short time later I received email from Citizens (NOT my other bank) that my Zelle transfer had been unblocked...I wasted hours of my time trying move my banking to Citizens only to find their on-line bank system is not viable. Avoid doing any business with Citizens Bank. I am the executor on an estate for a relative who had checkings and savings account with them and it has taken me years (I only wish I were exaggerating) to withdraw that money and close those accounts. I had to visit the branch in person at least five times and have talked with every department they have (they will send you back and forth to different departments to slow you down). I will never get those hours of my life back. The worst was when they started sending me delinquency notices on the closed accounts, which took me even more time to address. Citizen's online banking, Citizen Access is TERRIBLE. Customer service and their system is TERRIBLE! I've called 2x and looking to add a beneficiary on my account. Can't do this online so had to call their customer service #. Their system was so slow it took over 30 mins but they still can't add it. I had to repeat things being asked at least 2x. Terrible experience. My personal Money Market account was transferred from another east coast bank after a Citizens buyout. The only reason this isn't 1 star is that the automatic account opening and communication at the time was good. But since then, I've tried to transfer funds externally and close the account with no success. My email was showing as unverified days after I had done so. My external account had to be verified before it could receive the funds. I did that as well yet the funds transfer was still restricted. I figured I would try again but with the verified account that I had been using with the prior bank but still no success. Finally, Citizens Bank accepts accounts from all over the country but only maintains East Coast hours telephone support. Honestly, the Citizens Bank Mobile App is absolutely terrible. I couldn't even log into my business accounts today because the App consistently asks me to verify my identity first which I've already done literally a dozen times. The system then states that it sent me a verification code to my phone however the code never comes so I can't even log in to see my accounts or make any transaction. I walked in the traditional branch on French Town Rd at 11:32am on Saturday because my debit card was frozen due to some type of fraud alert. I waited as the Banker was watching over another banker helping a customer. Finally she greeted me. I was asked for my Driver's license and Bank card, and a citizens bank credit card. I explained that I don't have the citizens credit card. I also was asked for secondary identification and I handed her my ss card, my medical insurance along with the other identification cards. I was told I needed to give her an active debit card. I explained I don't have an active debit citizens card , that was the reason why I was there. I realized she had hung up the phone with the fraud department as she was on hold for 10 minutes and trying to get me out of the bank so she close. She continued to say my primary id wasn't enough and I needed a passport (2 primary) and 2 more secondary. I said no I don't need a passport and that I was a banker II 20 years before. This after requesting another form of identification. I asked if my military discharge paperwork would help. I also gave her an auto insurance bill. I thought I left it in vehicle and I said I will be right back because I know exactly where I left it. She began to hand me my documents as if she thought once out the locked door, she would be done. I explained that I had no debit card to access my money still and I couldn't wait until Monday. I asked to withdraw $260 so I would be ok until Monday. She began to process it then said I'm giving you a new debit card because the teller draws are closed. After lying to me about giving me a new debit card... I said Im sorry but I have been here since 11:32 am and I have no access to my funds. She then began asking me if I knew when and where I opened my citizens accounts initially, I said oh yes It was 1996 and I pointed across the way. then she asked me what my last deposits were. I gave her the amounts then I asked why are you asking when you personally verified all of the documents. All accurate information that she didn't expect. I was calm and respectful but the whole time and I said please just give me my money or debit and I will deal with this Monday. As I was walking out I heard her saying something and I said please don't.. she said something again. I said please don't do that to me again and I left . The worst and extremely horrible bank ever. Once transferred a large sum of money to citizens, after the money reached citizens, they claimed they had not verified my account information in the transferring bank and put my money on hold, and then actually moved the money to an external account in Fiserv (who knows what it is, I found it out very late, up to today I still do not know what it do). When called citizens asking about where the money is, I was pushed between different departments, or blamed the transferring bank for not sending out the money, or claimed the money had been returned- all lies. The woman called Brittany in the Office of Customer in Pittsburgh center who was so-called investigating my case never answered my calls or returned my voice messages. I had to file complaints with the federal bank regulator and FBI. It took me so much time on endless calls and visiting the local branch numerous times. No one really knew how or was willing to help me. It was such an ordeal. The money, which disappeared for 1.5 months, was then secretly posted back on my account. Called about a letter I received and asked about the letter stating that I made changes to my account. The person on the phone was NASTY! Informed them that I was calling for my wife who has limited English skills and that's when this person became SUPER NASTY! They charge .25% of your loan balance to remove escrow. This is ridiculous! Our loan was sold to Citizens. Our payments pays automatically from our bank each month. When the escrow changed, my payment did not. I have it auto pay so I don't have to think about it. A couple months later, I received a late notice. They had applied my last two payments to principal instead of my payment due. The graciously changed the payments from principal to my payment due. I ask them to remove escrow as I can pay my bills just fine and we would be able to set up the payment and not have to modify it. They said their would be a fee to remove the escrow and the Escrow department would contact me. I didn't alter my payment. I didn't know what the new payment would be yet. They returned my uncashed check instead of accepting it. Some days later I received the letter from the escrow department telling me what my "fee" to remove the escrow is. Right now I'm livid. I've got to call Monday to make my payment and I'll be keeping my escrow account as I'm not paying that ridiculous fee. I expect to have to argue my way out of a late fee now for a payment that was not late. I do NOT recommend Citizens Bank mortgage. read more

Avoid this banking group like toxic waste! I was wrangled into applying for a promotion offered by Appliance Connection of 0% interest rate and 12 months to pay (great deal right, but not so fast!). This is a boilerplate bate and switch tactic and these guys are the "tongue in cheek" giggling jokesters when they get you! I was interested in a good deal and fortunately I wasn't unfortunate enough to have to take the cocka they were dishing out. I applied using the link sent to me by Appliance Connection and was quickly approved for a $12,000 LOC but at 9.99% interest rate for 12 months (not horrible but the principle of the deal was no interest rate). My credit score is 796, so I think I would be the best choice for such a good deal but noooooo! These guys are crooks and sketchy operators. Danger, Danger and avoid these tricksters! Of course, when I call to straighten it all out and cancel my order with Appliance Connection everyone goes "radio silence." Get this, I pay off my auto loan July 6, 2021 and get a congratulations letter that I paid of my loan in full and they would be sending lien release to DMV. I wait 8 weeks no Title in mail. I called customer service, wait in hold almost an hour, and ask rep when they mailed my lien release to the DMV. They then inform me they sent it out 4 days later to CARMAX! I own the car and CarMax has nothing to do with this transaction! I've opened up case after case with them, no help. 4 months and I not only don't have my pink slip but the DMV will not issue tags without title being corrected. I sent letters via email and certified mail and no response. I paid of my truck so I could sell it... now I can't do that w/o title correction from them or drive it because I have no tags!! read more

My accounts were transferred after HSBC decided to offload their non-super wealthy accounts (I believe they sold off accounts that had less than USD$100,000?) and Citizens Bank bought out the accounts. Citizens Bank has been nothing short of awful. They charge you exorbitantly with "maintenance fees" for essentially nothing. It is nearly impossible to ask for a live representative. When you are finally able to get in the queue for a customer service representative, they will have you waiting 20+ minutes regularly. For instance, I just spent over an hour trying to resolve an issue with their "service fees." I am putting that in quotations since they essentially provide zero actual service, unless you count letting you access your funds as "service." Find a decent bank or credit union. To say that Citizens Bank is the worst bank I've ever worked with would be a gross understatement. To say that Citizens is the worst vendor of any type I've ever worked with would still be a gross understatement. After opening a High Yield Savings Account, and making two deposits totaling $11,500, they froze my account. I was unable to access my money. Why did they do this? They never gave a reason. My wife and I are current on all our taxes and always have been. We owe no back payments to any creditors. We even pay off all credit card bills in full each month. All this can be verified. The path they gave me to unfreeze the account was pure bull. It involved getting a Hold Harmless Letter from one of the financial institutions from which I deposited money into the savings account. What the hell is a Hold Harmless Letter? Good question. No one knows. Not even those involved in banking! But here's the thing. I had to be the one to contact that other institution. And Citizens refused to provide a sample letter or further information. They even refused to provide an address to send that Hold Harmless Letter. Under duress, I did as asked and contacted that financial institution. They did not know what I was talking about. They even tried to contact Citizens but they could not get acceptable information. They concluded that Citizens was likely involved in fraud, and thus, the other institution could not do anything. So there I was. Citizens was indefinitely holding a substantial sum of funds that belonged to my family, and I had no way to get my funds back. I contacted the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Better Business Bureau, my state attorney general, and my congressperson, among others. After they put me through hell for over ten weeks Citizens finally returned the money they owed me. They gave neither an explanation of their actions nor an apology. I always believed the safest place to put money was in an FDIC-insured bank account. Doing business with Citizens destroyed that belief. Their treatment of me went beyond incompetence. It was outright cruelty. And all I did wrong was having faith in the United States banking system. I cannot find the words to fully express the depth of my rage at Citizens. read more

Horrible account opening experience, very long waits for customer service, and no interest in assisting customers. Opened account and transferred $1,000 from an existing account. Funds were placed on hold without any written notification (written notification is their policy). Account was successfully opened online a few days later, money did not appear. Citizens made no effort to look into this and after four hours of cumulative phone time and five phone calls refused to do anything and blamed the transferring bank; this was clearly a Citizens issue as ACH record showed it transferred successfully to Citizens. Finally received funds returned to original bank account (due to efforts of bank which funds were transferred from) 63 days later. If you're looking for a bank with long waits for customer service, fractioned groups that can't understand or see all your account info (transaction did not appear to most people spoken with at Citizens), and lack of concern for the customer Citizens is your bank. read more

Someone used by business card to charge a bunch of stuff. It overdrew my account and I got slammed with overdraft fees. They credit me back the money for the charges and did not reverse the overdraft fees. It has been 6 weeks. I called again to take it off and I am hold now for 35 minutes and still no resolution. They see the reverse charges due to fraud and still can't reverse the charges the first time I called and now I have wasted 35 minutes with no resolution. There was no reason why the initial claim was not honored. I am closing my account and taking my business somewhere else. read more

This bank appears to be operating on auto-pilot. I was in password re-set hell for 2 weeks as it wouldn't recognize any password I set, (except maybe once every 4 times). Waiting for customer service takes forever, but there's no choice because I wanted to close my account (because of the afore-mentioned) but there's nothing on the website instructing you how to do it. It took forever to move my funds to my new savings account, and now, God knows how long I'll have to wait for the notification and acknowledgement that it actually is closed.I will never bank with any online bank unless they have a clear-cut method for closing the account when you're finished. Citizens turned off paper statements, so I have a savings account with them that has whittled down to nearly nothing because of rampant fees. Been a Citizen Bank client for 22 years. Have my mortgage, savings, credit card, a gold and green checking. Had an unauthorized charge on my green card debit account which overdrawn my bill paying checking account. First I get a $35 charge followed the next day with a $30 extended service. I called and disputed the unauthorized charge and cancelled the debit card. Citizen reversed the $15 charge but left me with the services charges saving if I had that account connected to my overdraft like I do on my other checking account there wouldn't have to have those fees. So basically they said it was my fault. So onto the next issue. I requested a new debit card. They said 3-5 business days to arrive. 10 business days later no card. So I called again, they expressed shipped the new card and charged me $12. This morning I get a text message from FedEx my card arrived and was signed for by David. There are 6 houses on my mile long street... there is no David. Called FedEx and spoke with India about the missing delivery. So 12 days now I've not had my debit card, paid $12 for citizens not mailing it and $65 in fees This has been one of if not the worst customer service experience I've ever had. The awesome thing about this story is that I may be only one small person with a couple of accounts. They loose me and it's not a problem. But, I work very closely with the US SBA in Mass and NH and sit on an advisory board for US Dept of Commerce. I can easily stir up a lot of $#!+ enough to have their CEO Bruce Van Saun to hear about. Number #1 rule of consumer services, treat everyone as if they were your only client because you never know who they might be. As for me, I'm not giving the a 7th chance. Well, months later and after *three hours* spent on the phone, I think my saga is finally over . . . maybe? Like many on here, I previously had an account with HSBC, which was acquired by Citizens. As we primarily used HSBC for savings, I didn't really pay attention to my account statements, as we didn't use the account to transact any business, so what really could happen? Well, when I finally got around to reviewing my account, I discovered that my savings account had repeatedly been charged "dormant account" fees that HSBC had never charged me. I went back and reviewed the welcome package that Citizens published for transitioning accounts - no mention of dormant account fees. I contacted customer service and got the fees waived, but they told me that, to avoid future fees for my accounts, I would have to keep making monthly transfers between my checking and savings accounts for . . . reasons? Obviously, I thought all this was ridiculous and just a *tad* shady, so I trekked to a bank branch to close my accounts. Like a schlep, I let the branch manager talk me out of closing my accounts after he assured me that the issues I had been dealing with would be resolved. At the same time, he tried to upsell me on some of their other financial products, making me suspect that the whole "dormant account" nonsense was some hare-brained marketing ploy to get HSBC transferees to contact Citizens so they could be sold new financial gimcrackery. Paranoid? Maybe, but as an attorney and someone who follows the shenanigans of Big Banks (see, e.g., Wells Fargo), I wouldn't put it past them. After being charged yet *another* unfounded fee this month, I finally decided to get a move on closing the accounts. I called to get the fee waived (which they did) and then tried to initiate funds transfers to one of my other savings accounts with a different bank. That's when the real fun started. The online transfer system wouldn't let me transfer over $10,000 at a time, so I started out trying to transfer that much to my external savings account. Everything looked like it was hunky-dory until I received a December 23 email telling me, "We have temporarily suspended your [external bank] account for the funds transfer service." No explanation as to why the suspension was happening, just an admonition to call customer service. I didn't get around to calling customer service until 12/26, as I was simultaneously dealing with Southwest's royal f**k-up and spending hours on the phone with them trying to figure out where the h**l my luggage was being held hostage. When I called Citizens, the customer service reps were super helpful (actually not being sarcastic there) and removed the suspension, authorized the $10,000 transfer, and told me that they would raise Citizens's cap on savings transfers so that I could complete withdrawing the rest of my funds and close my savings account. Unfortunately, what appeared to be the end of my journey was only a deceptive lull before another foray into Mordor. After scheduling a transfer of the rest of my remaining account funds, I received a December 28 email stating the following, "This is to notify you that the Inter Institution Transfer Request(s) referenced below has been canceled due to an over-limit condition." So I guess the limit that supposedly had been raised had decided to stage a long Midwestern goodbye and linger around for another serving of the casserole du jour? I called Citizens *again* yesterday, December 29, and, after being given the run-around and being transferred to like 4 different departments, I was put in touch with another really helpful customer service agent (again, not being sarcastic - for such a sh***y financial institution, they seem to hire some real saints to talk to their benighted patrons). The lady took the time to understand my problem, reviewed the notes that a supervisor had previously made about authorizing a limit increase for transfers from my account, and told me that I should be able to transfer funds on December 30. End of story? Alas, no. Frodo and Sam hadn't even left the Shire. I tried transferring the funds today (December 30) and immediately got the message, "The transfer amount you have entered exceeds the monthly limit for Standard Service Type." So, again, I schlepped off to try penetrating Citizens's bureaucracy. This time, playing against type, the customer service agent I spoke to couldn't give two sh**ts about my situation. (Jose, if you ever read this, thanks for nothing) Jose proceeded to basically call me a liar, tell me that the supervisor I had talked to hadn't authorized a transfer limit increase, and claim that Citizens *never* authorizes such limit increases. Later, I finally got a hold of a helpful supervisor who basically told me Jose had his head in his a** and sorted out the problem. Just have my fingers-crossed I don't get any more error-message emails. I'd write more, but apparently Yelp has word limits. read more

After more than 50 yrs I closed my accounts with Citizens. My final experience with this bank at their branch in Smithfield, RI only confirmed my decision to leave. With a very long line of customers there were only 2 tellers on duty. There were 4 other employees in their offices and not one came out to assist or at least apologize for the inconvenience. This attitude appeared to come directly from the branch manager as she came into the lobby and was more concerned with where people were standing than addressing the situation at hand. The local team doesn't set the non competitive rates however they are responsible for providing quality customer service. They are failing miserably in this area. read more

If I could give zero I would. Do yourself a favor don't bank with Citizens its awful they charge you for bank statements that I don't even want. Don't even get me started on how the phone lines and apps are always down and not working. It's the worst I'll be closing my account today. read more
