This is such a cute - and clearly very beloved by the crowd who was also there enjoying their coffee - coffee shop not far from Overton Park. I ordered their Horchata Latte from City & State's summer menu -- think a delicious latte with cinnamon and rice milk! It. Was. So. GOOD!!!! Truly tasted like the perfect drink for me. The coffee had such a great flavor and the cinnamon was in every single sip somehow?! My gosh. I'm not kidding - it was so good. Worth driving across town to get again and again. And the murals outside the building are stunning! I love a neighborhood coffee spot and this one is adorable nestled in the Binghampton Arts area of the city. There is an outside covered seating area as well and dog friendly. On this visit it didn't feel people friendly however it was immediately after opening but two staff person/owners, not sure but they didn't feel welcoming to me. We did come in filming so there was an immediate reminder to not film faces even though it was also posted. And I get that people do not read and miss signs, but it was the tone for me. Nothing abrupt or ugly it just made a difference in my experience. We a group of four were there at open, 8:15 or so and the place is spacious as there are two areas of seating. The decor is nice and airy with exposed brick, plants and colorful seating. The parking is plentiful as there is rear and street parking. However, I was not a fan of the coffee I ordered. Smokey Salted Caramel latte with whole milk and unfortunately that is what I tasted most, milk. The salted caramel whatever flavoring (because I am not sure what the flavoring was) and milk. My first sip was a mouthful of foam and salted caramel, pure smoke taste then salt the liquid caramel. Well that's how it tasted in my mind and the best way to describe it. Now in all fainess, I didn't immediately stir because I didn't wan't to mess up the pretty design so perhaps the coffee should have been stirred before initial sip. Since the coffee doesn't stay warm long I did ask for togo cup and try later at home. I re-heated the coffee and still a stong milk taste versus coffee. Okay first let me say the vibe of this place is very cool. Right outside of the shop is a a mural that says yay coffee, I mean how perfect is that!! It's also a store within the coffee shop that seemed like it had very cool local items to buy, and I'm all about shopping local. I will say my friends love this spot and go often. There is two sides, so plenty of seating and it seemed very conducive to working from this location too. So why only 3 stars? I am a fair believer that everyone has an off day and I'm guessing it may have been it for them. I just felt like the person who helped us was extremely unfriendly. It was my first time there and I felt rushed to order my drink with her. My coffee was okay and I definitely think I would have enjoyed it more having ordered probably something different and to be fair they had lots of options. Also to note my friends loved their coffee so it does seem like they produce quality coffee here. Like I said maybe she was just having a bad day but she didn't seem happy to see our group or to help our group, it was about 5 of us. And at one point we are standing all together by the register and she basically told one of my friends to move so the man behind her could go. I mean we were customers too and we all ordered drinks and if she felt like she was blocking him there could have been a more pleasant way to tell her, she wasn't doing it on purpose. And the man wasn't upset it wasn't like he was saying excuse me and nobody heard he was looking at what he wanted to order. All and all I would say I would still come back. I really do think they are worth a try. I know baristas work hard and working with the public isn't easy. I don't know what type of customers came in before us and it could have affected how she was feeling, I totally get it and definitely feel like they deserve a second chance to try because the place is a vibe! read more

Stop by City and State to grab one of the summer seasonal lattes today. I wanted to try the mango sticky pudding latte. I ordered it half sweet with oat milk. It was pretty good, but I did not taste that much mango flavoring. It was quite refreshing since I ordered it iced and it's quite warm today in Memphis Tennessee. The baristas were very kind and friendly. The establishment has changed their layout of the place and they have merged the gift shop and the coffee shop together where there is merchandise and tables in both areas. This was my fave coffee shop and I've been a regular for years. I noticed what felt like a general decline in friendly customer service over the last year or so. Ignored it for a while ... assumed folks are allowed to have a bad day ... but I've noticed it's become more pronounced. Went earlier this week and it was obvious I wasn't wanted. I'm not LE, but based on a sign on the door, it appears they're invoking a right to not serve that community ... and I suppose my short haircut maybe causes them to think I'm part of that community. Either way, I come for the coffee. We don't have to be best friends, but I'm not ok with outright unfriendly interaction. I'll get my coffee elsewhere from this point. All the best to you. read more

Ok so the blueberry muffin was good but there was no real lemon taste but that is not why the stars are lost. I tried to order an iced caramel mocha and the barista said they can only do one or the other. I said so you can't ring me up for one and add the syrup and charge me for it.. and she just looked at me like it was impossible. Not helpful or even like no problem we can do that for you. I mean you have what it takes soooo.. charge me a buck and move on? What also nixed it was my friend asked if we can get the coffees to go but the food to stay and eat. After making several repeat visits to the coffee shop, these are my updated impressions. I enjoyed the iced lattes, cappuccino, and occasionally some pastries. The staff are friendly and helpful. I also appreciate the individual seating desks, which sometimes feature a power outlet. You can do some work, but the space could sometimes be crowded and noisy; however, good NC earphones can wash that out. Attached is a shop with nice home gadgets and souvenirs to buy. I love myself a delicious latte as a treat and have been on the hunt for an amazing one since moving back to Memphis a few months ago. City & State's lumberjack latte did not disappoint. Rich, creamy (I had mine with oat milk), the nuttiness of all the different flavor notes (pecan, maple, and cinnamon). Additionally, despite being busy, the service was super quick. The space is fun and queer-friendly, with an attached gift shop that had me looking for excuses to buy people things. For my first visit, I ordered a long black coffee which was delicious and gave me the jolt of energy I needed to power through the rest of the day. I liked the casual interior and the connected shop so I could browse while I waited for my drink. All of the employees I interacted with were very friendly. The coffee shop's setup had plenty of room to keep 6 feet between patrons, and the outdoor patio was spacious. I decided to drop in today to try the smokey salted caramel latte. I love the cute little mural in the parking area. Amazing crafted coffees!! I tried one of their seasonal coffees; Cherry Walnut Long Black, a sort of americano with plum, cherry and sage, amazing! The other coffee was a Smoky Salted Caramel latte, excellent as well. Their pastries are also original, we tried the Boozy donut; a Grand Marnier infused donut, and a Gluten Free Banana Nut muffin.
