I've passed this place a couple times and decided to place a to go order tonight. The prices are wonderful and the amount of food for the money is great. The young lady who brought me my order was wonderful and full of smiles. I would've gave 4 stars but I'm not a fan of sweet bbq and the triple cue was swimming in sweet sauce . If I could put zero stars, I would. I never been to city BBQ to dine, but I did order takeout. I ordered a loaded, baked potato with barbecue pulled pork and all the toppings. Once I opened the bag, there's sauces and everything for the barbecue, but absolutely nothing else except a half a baked potato. No barbecue. No toppings, nothing. I paid $22 for a quarter of what I ordered. I hope this isn't what other people have to put up with because this is unacceptable! I will not be ordering from them again. We come here monthly-ish, even though it's a bit of a drive. We're always greeted cheerfully, our order is ready quickly, and we get to eat fantastic barbecue. We generally share a half-rack of ribs, then each get our own sides. For our appetites, that's a perfect amount. My husband always gets the fries. I switch it up between the creamy cole slaw, the green beans and the collard greens. I love the pulled pork here. The kids portion is just the right size and comes with a side. But the main reason I ordered from City was to try the new salted pretzel s'mores pudding dessert. It was just okay. I recommend packing the pretzels separately so they don't get soggy and use much, much less marshmallow fluff. read more

This location has a separate line for call ahead and pick up orders. I ordered my food online so when I arrived at the restaurant, I went to the pick up line. I didn't receive an acknowledgment, greeting or anything. There was someone leaving which left me there standing alone. I counted a total of 7 staff members. (1 black woman, 3 black men, 2 white men, and 1 white woman) After 5 minutes, someone from a food delivery service came in to pick up an order. He was acknowledged. He asked about his order and was assisted. I said several times "I have not been helped or even acknowledged." Everyone ignored me. If I had not already paid for my order, I would have left. I felt like I was invisible and tears welled up in my eyes. This is not related to being short staffed or covid. When another person came in and stood behind me, finally I was asked my name (black man). I was handed my order in a nonchalant way (older white male). No apology for my treatment or my wait. If I was not on a time restraint, I would have asked for the manager. From being able to partake in this location several times even before it was opened to the public, til today, has shown me that this location has changed tremendously. First timer.. I had a brisket sandwich and hush puppies. The brisket was better than average and good standalone. The bun was mediocre unfortunately, cheap bun from the grocery store. I did find the sauces tasty though and helped the bun be palatable. The brush fire and sweet city sauces were also better than average. Hush puppies were crisp on the outside and done inside. I really liked the flavor. Seemed to have a hint of onion in the mix.. So far I could have given them 4 stars, however they fell down in a couple of areas. Tea was awful.. you could tell it was going bad. Like the urn wasn't cleaned right or old bad tea bags, but I think it was the former. Staff was a bit apathetic about it, at least two of the front line workers. I got soda instead.. BBQ place without good iced tea?? That's a tough one. Tables were dirty and I had to scrounge my own paper towels. It just seemed the staff were putting in their shift getting ready to go home. This just my sentiments. They were courteous, but not friendly. I have to admit...this place surprised me. Walked up to the counter of City Barbeque in Matthews, NC to look over the menu. Scott welcomed me and asked me if I would like any samples...well sure!!! After my samples I WAS SOLD!!! I decided on the Pick Two Meats of Brisket (lean and moist), Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage, some original and bourbon BBQ sauce, and a side of potato salad. What impressed me the most was the lean brisket...great flavor, bark, and while lean was still moist. Some of the best lean brisket I've had in a long time. The moist brisket was great with solid marbling and flavors while the Jalapeno Cheddar Sausage was delicious...just the right amount of heat and great cheddar flavors. The potato salad is a really good side and they take as much pride in their sides as they do in their meats. This place provides some legit BBQ!!! read more

The person put me on hold and switched me to Jennifer (I think that was her name). After explaining that I wasn't another customer I explained my issue. She asks me what she can do to make it right. I explain that im legally blind and don't drive so I can't come and get anything. I took the time to call them to tell them that they are dropping the ball not securing bags properly. I don't care about how short handed you are in the store. If people weren't giving them business they surely wouldn't need staff. I don't need the sighs from anyone because they have had to work an open to close. I have done that myself but that's not my customers problem. I have supported restaurants this ENTIRE pandemic since I have been blessed to be employed. I just want these places to take MY order seriously and protect me. I won't be giving my money to them for a while since my patronage isn't respected. Think twice before ordering if you care about your health. For the love of all that is Holy, please Lord, take away the "BBQ" from this place. Amen. My wife tried this place last time in Charlotte, and enjoyed it. This was a different location. Ordered brisket and ribs with Mac n cheese, my wife ordered brisket and sausage with beans. The brisket was dry, no flavor and zero smoke. This should have been used for chopped brisket sandwiches smothered in sauce, cause it was to dry to serve as slices. Zero smoke flavor and the rub was sub par. Now the ribs, they were either yesterday's or had been sitting their for over 8 hours, and we had lunch at 1pm, they wernt busy. They were so dry and the meat was so tough, I thought I was eating the bone. I've seen better looking ribs from a gas station, a McRibb looks gourmet compared to this. I've literally screwed up some bbq that was more appetizing and tasted better then this. It was just bad. To be fair, the sausage was good, I liked it. But nothing to rave about. The sides were tasty, now, was it because the actual meat was so bad? Or were there actually ok? I don't know. But the Mac n cheese was good and so were the beans. Their sauce is good as well. Would I go back? Hell no. It's that bad. So again. LORD I pray that the owners of this chain rebuke this bbq and repent from ever trying to call this blasphemous food bbq again. Great service and big servings. Mostly everything is super delicious. I wasn't a fan of the pulled pork. I love traditional vinegar based chopped pork I guess. Way too thick and stringy. I usually get the Ribs by the Bone. Buying them separately 3 veggie platter and ribs seems cheaper. Love love love the peach cobbler. I think they use guave nectar as the sweetener. The Jacked Mac and cornbread pudding is life. The brisket is good but gotta have those edges done to perfection. Love the flavor of the rub. Ate here a few times alone, with a friend twice (loves brisket), and with my mom. No complaints really. My mom thought the collards were spicy but she switched it out. read more
