Three stars is good! It's not bad, it's not amazing. It's good, so don't be discouraged and read on.
Preface: This stay was for a work visit, in June of 2022. This was during some of Switzerland's hottest temperatures in recorded history. Our first day there it was an extremely humid 96F (35.5C)
The hotel is located on somewhat of a busy street. It can be a bit noisy if you're on the main street side of the building and have your windows/balcony door open.
In general, it is a nice hotel. Nothing fancy. The staff was very attentive and welcoming the entire duration of our visit. Being from the US, I was very happy to find that it seemed that everyone on staff spoke beautiful English.
During the day, there were no food or drink options other than coffee, I believe. In the morning, the restaurant area had a full buffet breakfast to choose from. I believe it would be considered a typical breakfast, geographically. They had toast, hard boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, fruits, yogurt and cereals and granola. There were also a few stations of hot foods that changed. Bacon and eggs were pretty standard. To drink you could have one of many coffee types from the coffee machine, orange juice, blood orange juice or water. Very good breakfast.
The rooms were good size. Hardwood floors with a simple bed. The television was along a shelf that went across the entire wall into the desk/work area. The bathroom was pretty standard as well. Stand up shower and the usual features.
The only downside to the room was that there is no Air Conditioning within the individual rooms. First off - this is like many areas in Europe and the UK. Typically, the just don't need it. From what the staff said, this is also a governed rule as well. It is not allowed to have AC in the individual rooms. The lobby and the restaurant were somewhat cooler.
Because of the timing of my visit, the nights were unbearable. Each room did have an approximately 12 inch (30cm) fan. Even leaving the door open, with the fan on a chair brining in the outside air, didn't make much of a difference. It didn't remotely begin to cool down until sometime after 3am. Soon the sun would be up and the heat would follow.
This is a great location in terms of transportation and some beautiful scenery. Both the main train station and scenic Lake Biel are in walking distance from the hotel. Hopping on a train you can get to Bern and other locations quickly for a change of scenery and a bit of sightseeing.
Would I go back? Yes, I actually would. Now if I was coming back in the middle of summer again, I would check the local temperatures and I would check around to see if any of the other hotels did have air conditioning. It was a very basic hotel that meets all your needs. City Hotel is a great basic hotel for a for a business traveler. read more
