One of the highlights is exploring the grounds. It was a beautiful fall day with lots of wind. We even saw 3 deer. There is a lot of history here. Everyone had a twin bed until marriage. Some features were innovations for the time. They even had an indoor milking room for the house. A great place to bring any history lover. Plus it is haunted.

I grew up going to big public libraries in big cities, so I'm kind of a brat when it comes to…read morelibrary systems. But I really can't say enough nice things about the Duluth library. First, it's accessible -- right downtown with parking all around the building and right on the bus line. Second -- the staff is SO nice. We visit Duluth often but don't live there, and the staff is to a person helpful and considerate. I was working on research project and made several calls to the library for guidance and help in the week or so before I came to visit in person. Each person I spoke with was super helpful and one librarian even called me back because she thought of an additional thing that might help. Then I made my in-person visit to finish my research and use some of the tools you can only use at the library itself. Again, everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. They helped me locate the microfilm I needed, reminded me how to work the machine and even came back to check on me after awhile. I was also quite impressed with the number of online resources available for use even without visiting the library. There are a number of very helpful databases available on the library website. I can't say much about the book selection since that's not why I was there. But I did note that there's an exchange where the library can get books from other branches, which is always nice.

We were out of town for a week and had our mail held. I was expecting a package that was not…read moredelivered when mail resumed. The package had tracking and the tracking indicated that first delivery was attempted and then when they realized the error, it was returned to the post office to be held. Both my husband and I talked with the supervisor at Mount Royal who was no help. He called the carrier who insisted that the package had been delivered, but our video camera indicates that the package was not among the items being delivered and it was not with that mail when I picked it up from my porch. The supervisor tried to convince me that the package couldn't be scanned because there were lines on the scanning area, though it obviously had been scanned when first received as the tracking was updated. They offered no recourse for tracking down the package, and told my husband to contact the police as it must have been stolen. I asked if it was possible that the package was still at the post office and the supervisor said "maybe" but didn't offer to instigate a search. Basically they took the word of the carrier over the evidence of my camera and my word. Very poor service. Unfortunately, as the only option at this time is the post office, I recommend going private so that there is some accountability.

About three miles south of the Duluth/Superior bridges along the Peace Memorial Highway, this small…read morerest area is a nice spot for a break. The park has a decent sized parking area and a gazebo with picnic tables. There is also a historical marker, "The Sioux uprising in Minnesota during the Summer of 1862, culminating in the New Ulm Massacre, caused great alarm in Superior. A Committee of Safety was chosen, a Home Guard organized, and a stockade built on the bay shore here. An inventory of all firearms in Superior revealed a total of 60 shotguns, rifles and pistols. The state sent 192 muskets and 2 cannon. To assist the Home Guard, the Governor sent a company of Wisconsin soldiers that had been captured by the Confederates at Shiloh and paroled. This Company was called back for Civil War duty in the Summer of 1863 and was replaced by other Wisconsin paroled soldiers. The Chippewas residing in this vicinity remained friendly to the whites. By August 1863, the Sioux in Minnesota had been overcome and most of the soldiers left Superior. Eventually the stockade was abandoned."
