I like Jackson! They do a lot with a little. I find that it's a quality over quantity in these parts, and they do well with what they have. The food and beverage scene (my favorite part) is high quality albeit small in number. The hubs grew up in Madison (about 10 minutes away) and my in-laws in the area, so we visit annually for a few days. In that timeframe, Jackson serves us well. It's a break from the fast pace, and the southern hospitality is never lacking. Fave spots: The Apothecary @ Brent's Table 100 La Cour Elvie's Cup's coffee Saltine Manship Estelle Wine Bar & Bistro Pillow Donuts Mama's Juice Bar ... and a few others that are (unfortunately) no longer in operation. There's history here, certainly not the finest of American history, but it's ours nonetheless. I truly wish there was a thriving music scene in this area. There should be, but a girl can dream. This city is packed with history and is the state's most populous city. It is the State Capital of Mississippi and was Founded in 1821. It is named after General, and former US President, Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812. The city played a key role in the civil rights movement. Some notable events include the assassination of Medgar Evers, the Freedom Riders, numerous marches and sit-ins and the KKK bombing of the Beth Israel Congregation synagogue, I will admit that there is not a lot do do here, but the few things to do here are pretty cool. The city's top attractions include the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, The Mississippi History Museum, The Old Capitol, the Petrified Forest, Medgar Evers home and Museum, the Museum of Art, The State Capital and the Governor's Mansion. Downtown feels desolate and not a lot is open and many of the business and buildings are run down. The city has an international airport, but it is very small. The city is right in the middle of being a country town and a big city. Usually many people couple a visit to Jackson with a visit to nearby New Orleans. If you plan on moving here, houses look a lot cheaper here than the majority of the US. I enjoyed my time here in the city. I hope that someone invests a little money in the city and revitalizes it a bit. The direction that the city is taking is a shame, but I am optimistic of its future. I would say this city is intriguing and would probably not be a destination spot to visit, but a stop somewhere else or the site of a business trip. read more

If You're Going to Jackson or Thinking of it Read: As a person who has family in Jackson, I know a lot. (I also have been to Jackson many times) First, Jackson has many suburbs. Like, Ridgeland, Madison, Gluckstadt, and Richland. A lot of people live in the suburbs of Jackson. These suburbs have many restaurants and gift shops. A lot of the attractions are in the suburbs. For example, In Ridgeland, Northpark Mall is a great mall with a good amount of stores considering the size of said mall, and that mall has some nice stores, Belk, Bath & Body Works, Shoe Department, and Dillards etc. It also has many good restaurants, Cazadores, Jutatama, Belle Aires Bakery, Lost Pizza Co. etc. Second, Jackson has awesome stuff too. Jackson is home to much history, and you can see MOST of those attractions. Old Capital is a classic tourist stop, and it's very nice, as well as the Capital, which is absolutely gorgeous. The History Museum is also a great place to visit it has many cool things, and personally, it may be my favorite museum in Jackson. Jackson also has many great restaurants, Amerigo and the whole of Fondent (which is a street with tons of amazing attractions and restaurants) as well as many others.Jackson also has other great museums, Science, Children's, Sports, Art. Third, (pay good attention here) There are certain places in Jackson you shouldn't go. No matter what. Mostly in downtown Jackson, there's a lot of crime, and bad things happening there. It's decently safe during daylight, but still I suggest asking someone at a local business in Jackson where not to go in day or night. If you really want to go see, make sure it's daylight, and keep an eye out, and if you're in a particularly dangerous spot, be on the phone with someone, and ALWAYS go with someone else it's great if you're in a group. If you see anything..sketchy, call the police for sure. Fourth, Jackson's not all bad. Jackson has amazing museums, murals, and shops! Just go with the tips and I suggest reading more reviews! I really hate to give the place where I grew up one star, but I do have my reasons which will be explained. Technically, I did not grow up in Jackson. I grew up in Pearl which is a suburb east of Jackson. I was born in Jackson, but only because there wasn't a hospital in Pearl or the other nearby suburbs way back then. The drive to Jackson from Pearl is 10 minutes or less (depending on where you are in Pearl), and the Jackson Municipal Airport is actually located right smack dab in the middle of Pearl.... go figure. Growing up, Jackson wasn't so bad and I was there all the time for this, that, or the other. When I was a teenager and driving, the only place we really had to worry about avoiding was the west side of Jackson which is where the high crime rate was and was basically known as "the hood." I remember being told as a teen that's where people went for their drugs. Bottom line: Momma and Daddy said to avoid that area of town, so I did. So, for the most part, Jackson was pretty cool back then. There was always something happening downtown at The Coliseum. I went to many, many concerts there when I was a teen: Aerosmith, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, AC/DC, Guns n Roses... just to name a few. The malls were in Jackson. When I was young, we had Metro Center Mall, then when I was around the age of 12, Northpark Mall opened in on the north side of town (technically, it is in Ridgeland... another suburb). Back then this was the "fancy" part of town where the "rich" people lived. Anyway.... I'm talking too much about the past. I guess because I have really found memories of what Jackson use to be. Fast forward to the present.... Jackson is absolutely awful. There isn't one good part of the city anymore at all. It's completely riddled with crime. The pre-mentioned west side is worse and now the south side is equally as bad as the west side. I've been warned it's not even safe to go to those areas of Jackson during the daytime hours anymore. The "fancy" north part of town I talked about is now falling to pieces. All of the "rich" people have moved farther north into Madison and even Gluckstadt, or they've moved east into Flowood. So now you have these cities (suburbs) all around Jackson which are doing well and thriving because crime has taken over Jackson so badly people are moving the hell out. We go to MS often to visit family and I've been told all this and some of it I've actually seen. It makes me just want to cry. A couple of years ago, I would have probably still given this city three stars. Not anymore. Just this year (2015) I have personal known two men who were killed in Jackson. One of them was leaving the IHOP on I-55 North in Jackson (remember I told you the north part of town was once really good?) when he was robbed in the parking lot and beaten to death. He did manage to survive until he got to the hospital, but they couldn't save him. He was beaten that badly. In September, an 81 year old man that I had known since I was a child as he was close to my family, was last seen taking measurements at a home for a fence (he owned a fencing company). He was reported missing the following morning. A couple of days later, he was found murdered (a shot to the head) in some abandoned apartments in Jackson. It's really hard to wrap my head around the fact the city where I grew up has fallen into ruins like this. I have a lot of family there (in the suburbs) and I worry about them often. I do know, for the most part, they rarely, rarely go into Jackson. If you're planning to visit Jackson, stay in a hotel in the suburbs. There are some really good restaurants in the downtown area and the Old Capital which has been turned into a museum is really cool to visit. Wandering around downtown isn't so bad during the daytime. There are still a lot of people that work downtown. Whatever you do, don't go wandering around Jackson at night. Even be careful about the restaurants you go to at night. Heck, even during the daylight hours, make SURE you know the area of town you are going to is safe! The locals know the places to avoid; the tourists and businessmen/women do not. If you can't avoid Jackson, stay on your toes... get a taser..... but really, if at all possible just stay away. read more

Oh come on, the city of Jackson isn't all that bad. I've lived in the sip for 6 years and I can tell you from the year I first started living here there was absolutely not lot of things going for here. I'd admit when I first moved here, I hated it, but after living here I grew to enjoy it.. The city life was slow and deteriorating. However, a lot has changed since then. Whenever I visit Jackson I feel a sense of home here. As when I was a kid I used to always travel here from Houston with my family to visit my grandma. So, every time I come it's fairly hard for me to leave. The city has so much to offer, there's lots of history here and the buildings show it too. The King Edward's hotel has been standing for many years and since then it has been renovated. Eudora Welty's house is still here. Medgar Evers house has been turned into a museum. It's a lot easier to travel throughout the streets, but lots of people would assume that the area is pretty ghetto and sketchy, but really what impoverished neighborhood isn't? The crime rate here is high, but I mean there's crime everywhere. My mum always complains about how the crime is worst here, but after living in Houston the crime there is a lot worser. Once you look past that and truly discover the city you'll find out that the people are a lot friendlier and the hospitality level is to the roof. Moreover, the streets here are similar to the ones in Houston; lots of potholes everywhere. The last time I visited I seen they had a new Outlet Mall, repaired the Fornication St, added a Luby's and Fuddrucker eatery, and they continue to build.. That's definitely an eye-opener from what it was back then. I know, the previous Mayor wanted to really improve the city by tearing down all the crack houses, but unfortunately he died. Also, if you are ever craving that true home style country cooking, soul food licking, true ingredients, there's lots of restaurants here that are known for hole-in-the-walls, mom-pop, family-owned. I've sampled some of the best southern cooking here from Stamps big giant burgers, from the local fish spot frying up some delicious golden catfish, to the local grocery with some yummy breakfast food... oh, and the list goes on... I sure do have a few of my high school friends still live here and the always ask me when am I moving back or coming back to visit.. However, racism is still an issue here as well as the South. It's not hard to miss it, but for the most part if you are nice to them, they won't give you much of a problem. Families here are tight and you can certainly feel the love that they have for one another..lots of home cooking and bbq's. The museums, churches, hospitals, and art galleries really move towards the southern theme. Yup, there's definitely a church on every corner and some are side-by-side.. The Jackson Zoo still up and running. If you ask anybody here, they'll tell you that the University hospital is the best as for me I had my surgery at Baptist and it was still good. Most people would mention that if you ever visit the sip, you'll certainly be stepping back in time as everything here is completely backwards..when I lived here I didn't notice it as much.. I'd tell you what after living in Houston for 5 years, I do find myself often missing the life of living in Jackson with the slow-motion of life it really makes you realize life isn't just about working your arms and legs off..
