FAVORITE CITY in the PHOENIX METRO AREA! Tempe is known for its historic, college atmosphere and laidback vibes. The Tempe Lake was so much fun to visit, it's a perfect walk and you get to cross some bridges and sidewalk trails. You get a good view of Tempe's skyline. I love the shopping hub near ASU's campus. There's plenty to do and explore, I love that ASU doesn't takeover but enhances the downtown area. The sports arenas/facilities are cool to see, I got excited! There's also tons of eateries in Tempe, we passed up a ton of them on our way to the lake. You also NEED to try the coffee at Brick Road it's amazing! Parking isn't too bad in Tempe, it's a little difficult to find but fees are decent. Parks are clean and people generally have a good attitude unlike other places (I'm looking at you Scottsdale). Overall, Tempe seems like a welcoming, progressive, and friendly place to live. If you're a kind, chill person, you should be fine. read more

Quality/Quantity - Was a 5 star city, but traffic is getting busier and busier. Love the college town vibes. From all the outdoor activities, hiking, to the breweries, food scene, and other nearby attractions. Things to do in Tempe: See above. Tempe Town Lake, Papago Park, Stadiums & Arenas, ASU, Tempe Marketplace, The Churchill, etc. Other things to do, but not for me (so far): Sea Life Aquarium, Center for Arts, Museums, AZ Distilling Company, Farmer's Market, etc. Nearby cities to visit: Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Chandler, etc. Also good places to visit, but not so nearby: Tucson, Sedona, etc. Sedona is hopefully a place we will visit soon. Atmosphere - 40+ square miles, only 0.21 of it is water. Population 180K+. Service - Good. Catered to college students, locals, and the parents of students. Price - Depends on what you do, buy, eat, or drink. But relatively inexpensive compared to CA and even NV. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1892. City of Tempe is known for being a college town to Arizona State University (ASU) and its students. There are plenty of cultural attractions such as Gammage Theater and Tempe Town Lake. Foods and restaurants near the campus have fair price with the students in mind. In Tempe you will see an abundance of self driving cars known as Waymo. Book a ride if you dare! The can also opt to have a driver with you if you prefer. Prices for the driverless car are competitive to ride sharing vehicles and in many cases, can be better. High rise buildings and living situations are growing quickly here. Many of the quaint type bungalow homes are a thing of the past. read more

To be honest, I checked in here because everyone was so extremely awesome and helpful and I wanted to let everyone know that. I didn't get anyone's names but the lady at the desk where you would request a sign permit was very friendly and helpful and the lady at the zone enforcement office, which is where I went first, was so helpful she actually went to grab a sweater so she could physically walk me across the property to show me exactly where to go for a sign permit. THAT was way above and beyond expectations. I guess a good reason to post this review would be to let anyone know that if they need a temporary sign permit or one that's for an extended time period, you can just go to their website (I've attached a picture of the QR code) and don't even have to go down there. But if you want a good experience on a world where they are often hard to find, go down and pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed. BTW, don't park in the garage below the Orchard house because it will cost you, park in the one to the east of the sign permitting building (which is the upside down pyramid) and the sign people can validate. read more

Just an update to say I still love Tempe! I was reading some of the 1, 2 star reviews and man they are harsh. It's like the city did one thing the person didn't like and then "Tempe sucks". That's not an accurate reflection of an entire location. Anyway, I'm not here to argue with folks who don't like Tempe, that's fine, move along lol. I enjoy residing in Tempe and have been doing so for 3 years. I drive through the ASU area all the time and yes it's super busy.... it's a college area. They tend to be that way. We ride our bikes and scooters around town with no issues. One guy complained there is no parking, that is somewhat true in that there's no free parking in the downtown area (which is common in DT areas). I park my car all the time all over Tempe. Tempe is a great place if you are fun, open minded, youthful, like adventure and want to be in a happening spot of the east valley. Which I do, so I enjoy it :) Tempe is still 5 stars in my book. read more

City of Tempe is another city my eldest daughter and I visited during our stay in Scottsdale, AZ. Funny, our lodging was in Scottsdale, but our dining and pickleball play were in neighboring cities. We got a chance to eat at a few great restaurants in Tempe. One of them is called RigaTony's... it's an Italian restaurant. I'll be doing a separate review on that visit. Anyway, I really like Tempe. Street signs are huge so you can see them. They are almost top heavy if you know what I mean. Homes are beautiful. Shopping centers are everywhere. It's a very quaint town. read more

The city of Tempe has great restaurants, entertainment, activities, etc. I find myself visiting at least a dozen times a year as I have gammage season passes, and do try local establishments when I visit for shows. Thank you City of Tempe for towing a car today in a vacant Mill & 10th lot. Street parking was unavailable due to a lady who got hit by a bus and medical services were onsite. Pathetic abuse of power and for god sakes if there is an issue nearby cut some F-ing slack for 60 minutes or so. No wonder why Mill Ave is an aging embarrassment that only the homeless want to live. read more

I have never come across a City planning department who will go out of their way to NOT help property owners like The City of Tempe! When we first bought property here 8 years ago, they were incredibly helpful and things happened really efficiently. Now, I have been dealing with a gas leak/repipe since January 28th 2024 and the following people have gone out of their way to be unhelpful : Samantha, Julie, Michelle, Connor Lynch (he never even bothered to return phone calls); John Earhardt is also unable to return emails or phone calls. Finally found Nina Adams who has been helpful and assisted us in getting this project completed. However, the inspector, Javier Saucedo Sr., shows up without a phone call (remember phones record calls received) and claims he called and no-one was there. Rubbish! This used to be a well run City, but Corey Woods has lost control and it sucks big time. Avoid, avoid, aviod at all costs! read more

Tempe is great but closing ALL the roads weekend of Sep 8/9 for the game is insane, not traffic control. Rio Salado, University, Rural... all CLOSED. I'm as urbanist and almost anti car as it can get, but this doesn't make Tempe walkable... it makes it a joke. The cherry on top was the Cruise self driving car perpetually attempting to turn onto Rio Salado for over two hours.... read more

There is a nice park at Tempe Towne Lake. However there is no parking there. If you park in a disabled space there. , the fine is 460 dollars. We parked there on a Sunday afternoon for a couple hours, got a 470 fine. We went back to Yuma Sunday evening. The 3 kids were back in school in Yuma Monday morning. However the policewoman must not have met her quota of tickets for the week. We found out there's another ticket on the our car cited on Monday morning. I cannot understand how they made the Monday ticket, it's out and out fraud. We suppose the police are just corrupt. We arefighting this, but it's a hassle. I have to take the kids out of school, drive 3 hours to have them as witnesses, just due to greediness of the town of Tempe. So just a warning to anyone visiting Tempe. I've lived here for almost 30 years now, near McClintock and Alameda. I'm saddened by how the quality of life has degraded in this city particularly in the last 5 years. I walk my dog every morning and the trash I now see every day is really bad, it's filthy, my walk is strewn with litter every few feet now. This used to be a such a nice area, now not far from an open trash pit. They alleys are atrocious. Again, completely filthy with loads of trash around the dumpsters and totally overgrown with weeds. Weeds like that get me a fine from my HOA. And the alley behind my house is now all chewed up from the front loader you used to pick up my properly placed bulk trash items. I had a small table back there, you used a front loader to pick it up? Why? That's the worst tool to pick up a table and the mess you made of the alley verifies it. That once nice, solid soil you scooped up and moved around (to pick up a 10 lb table) supports up my fence! I know, it's way too much to expect that the guy in the front loader actually pick up the less than 10 pound table, and prevent damage to the alley, because scooping up something sitting on 4 feet makes more sense to him, he don't have to get up from his seat. That was the level of service we used to get in Tempe. Now, my water tastes and smells like dirt. Yes, actual dirt, so I called and complained. They called back and told me it's algae blooms, happens every year. If it happens every year, how is it that you can't prevent it? My water smells so bad I couldn't stand to take a shower yesterday. Their answer? Just sit tight, it'll get better. Oh, and them swearing that the water meets all quality standards, which makes me question who's writing the standards. Tasting like this, I really doubt it passes your tests and if it does, your tests aren't good enough. IT'S DIRTY! And now I will pursue independent testing, I still refuse to believe it smells and tastes this bad and is fine to consume. I'm shocked that's their answer, but over the years I've really come to expect nothing from this city. What a shame, I used to speak so highly of Tempe and now cant' wait to move away from it, just not economically viable right now with interest rates. This town is nothing like the one I moved to over 30 years ago, and it's not changing for the better. No more small town quirky charm, it's all glass towers now, I don't even go downtown anymore and it used to be the first place I took guests. I remember when Rundle's was on Mill, and Casey Moore's was a fun hippie type joint. We've come pretty far from that, and managed to lose all of the appeal in the process. read more

Tempe is a very inclusive place with lots of things to do. Easy access to the Valley Metro Light Rail. Home to Arizona State University Go Devils. Visitors can visit A Mountain for a short yet challenging hike or spend an afternoon at Tempe Beach Park & Tempe Town Lake (Tempe Town Lake is Arizona's second-most visited public attraction) which is host to numerous events all year long. Aloha fest, Tour De Fat, Oktoberfest, AZ Ironman and many others. If you get a chance swing by City Hall an upside self shading Pyramid. The city is bicycle friendly and has one of the LARGEST Childrens libraries in the entire country. Tempe also has a great historical museum right next door to the Library. read more

The city is vibrant, bustling, and is one of the more progressive places to live in Arizona. A lot of people only associate Tempe with ASU but there's so much more. I think there's a little bit of something to do for everyone. The parks are a peaceful and relaxing place to spend a few hours, with activities available like paddle boarding at Tempe Town Lake. Although the city is relatively flat, you can do some hiking on Hayden Butte/A mountain. If you are super hardcore into athletics, there is the Ironman competition held at Tempe Town Lake every year. For those into the bar scene there's Mill Avenue and some notable local breweries like Four Peaks. Family activities are also plentiful, such as the Festival of the Arts and our gorgeous Tempe Public Library. The Tempe Arts Center provides various cultural shows and entertainment. If shopping is your vice, Tempe Marketplace offers a wide variety of stores to choose from. Last but not least, there's the FOOD! You can find such a wealth of restaurants to choose from here. Ethiopian, Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, Laotian, Japanese, Indian, Mexican, Middle Eastern, or if you simply want a damn good burger, you can find what seems like a limitless selection of places to satisfy any food craving you might have. Tempe is also home to the very first Cold Stone Creamery which is still in business today! How cool is that? The central location means it's easy to get to Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, or Chandler. When ever people have to visit the city office they think of long lines and confusion... that's never been the case for me with the city of tempe. Employees are helpful and personal and want to make sure guy have all the right answers. No matter hoe 'dumb' my question might of been, the employees make an effort to get you the right answer to understand going forward. Besides the city of tempe employees, being a resident, I enjoy everything that my city has to over!!! Some folks call this a college town and don't get me wrong it is home to ASU, but that is just the 1st notable trademark in regards to this artsy yet futuristic town. From the picturesque skyline to the sparkling Tempe Town Lake, Tempe holds many hidden treasures from the little nooks of architectural designs, sculptures and shops, it is certainly a place that you could lose track of time easily while exploring. The chic flow including the Hippy Gypsy and the posh atmosphere of Lotions and Potions are sure to please anyone with the love of boutiques! And just when you think that you have seen it all you find yourself at the Light rail station! It can take you east all the way through Mesa and if you decide on west it will transport you through Phoenix all the way to Glendale. From one direction to another Tempe is definitely the place to visit for any adventurer. I was born and raised here and I still never get tired of exploring a little slice of desert heaven. Being an Arizona native, I grew up going to Monte's Casa Vieja for special occasions and walking up Mill Avenue with my family for a peaceful after-dinner stroll. Those days sadly are over in more ways than one. Every street, and I mean every single street in the downtown Tempe area especially during the Summer months, is under perpetual, unrelenting construction and closures. You never know if the street you're on (I'm looking at you Rio Salado) will be narrowed down to one lane, on the left, or in the middle or on the right, as it changes daily. Perhaps Ash near University will be blocked completely by a cement truck delivering cement to a 3' x 3' square hole near the sidewalks today and/or narrowed down to one lane permanently, or temporarily, or both? Maybe Mill Avenue near Gammage will be narrowed down to one lane due to a trolley track install ("why have two lanes ever when you can narrow it down to one--you should be grateful we even give you a lane!" the city of Tempe says while laughing maniacally). They close entire streets for months just because they are putting in an apartment complex. You're probably thinking, oh, but they must really love pedestrians, right? You would be wrong. When there is construction on buildings, which is always, they narrow down the sidewalks forcing walkers into a single-file formation so you are bombarded by kamikaze bike riders coming in all directions with no place to go. Yes, fully expect to share a sidewalk with a biker, a skateboarder and someone riding a motorized scooter--all at the same time. There are scooters tossed every which way on the sidewalks blocking foot traffic. When the Tempe Art Walk comes to town twice annually, the people who live in the W6 building are forced to drive through a parking garage to access Ash Avenue creating even more congestion for nearby businesses and attendees. Who decided any of this was a reasonable solution and why haven't any of those people been institutionalized or at least put under psych evals? When I first started working in Tempe as an adult, I thought, hey, this may be a good city to consider relocating. After working here for two years, the answer is absolutely not. Any amount of commuting is worth it to escape the hot mess that is Tempe. read more

Don't go. Too many homeless. My husband was going to wait for me on a bench outside a store but he couldn't sit down because a homeless stinky person laying on bench. This not only happened 1 time but several. We were walking down the street homeless begging for money. Trash thrown on street. All this happened in an afternoon not in the evening hate to see what it is like after dark. No one was asking these homeless to get off benches or begging for money. Where are the security to control this. read more

Pretty cool SWAT Team here. I broke numerous laws once and they were super gentle when they took me down. Barely felt the pavement at all. Most police will give you a swift kick or two for good measure but these guys were pros. They let the pavement kick my ass for me. Super glad I met these guys over a misdemeanor warrant. If I ever choose to play GTA5 IRL again. It will be here. read more

While there are some good places to eat at, Tempe really isn't the place to be. There is ALWAYS construction going on at ASU during the busiest times of the day which frequently clogs traffic. The thousands of students and those with bikes certainly don't help either. Trying to navigate through this mayhem is risky especially since some students try to jaywalk their way across the street. Parking, if you're even lucky to find a spot, is inconvenient and far and is just not worth the hassle. Some parts of Tempe are nice especially those places away from campus, but anywhere on campus is pretty much a disaster. Oh yeah, and some of the rudest, superficial, obnoxious morons are found at ASU. Stay as far away from this place as possible and consider living (or enrolling if you're thinking about going to school here) elsewhere preferably away from the valley of the sun. read more

Definitely not a fan! Their big claim to fame is Arizona State University (ASU) and the Diablo stadium for spring training. ASU is well known for being a party school and quite frankly, I do not want or need to deal with college kids and their antics in the area. For the life of me, I do not get the infatuation with this school. The Diablo stadium spring training creates unnecessary hype and tons of traffic and congestion in the area during the training times. The area where the stadium is looks really run down. I would not recommend getting off the freeway around the stadium - the area is very industrial with tons of winding roads with little street signage. There is also a lot of construction in the area and without a reliable GPS, you will get lost. There are tons of police on the freeway and they just wait to pull you over. I've seen many vehicle accidents in the Tempe area as well. Homeless on the sides of the freeway, just like any other large city. read more

Really loved my stay here in Tempe! Lots of good places to eat and drink, and the people here seem friendly. The Phoenix area seems pretty nicely well planed in regards the street systems, although Borderline Ave has some intersections that will make you think your in the wrong lane because the turn signal is in the lane that is going straight, so that has thrown me off several times, who knows maybe they thought it would be funny to do that to people that dont live here? LOL read more
