Excellent! Such a cute little shop in the Little Italy area of Schenectady! The shop was opened in 1921 by Rose Mastrianni and her husband Raffaelo Civitello. As they tell you on their website, friends gathered here to play cards for pastries, cookies, and spumoni. You feel like you walked back in time with the "old-time charm". Check out the scale where they weigh your cookies! There are ads from the early 1900s. You can park in front for free, sit inside, and enjoy cappuccino or their cookies and desserts. Service was excellent! I had their cookies, and they were amazing. So soft with almond paste center! Fresh sugar cookies, raspberry cookies, pistachio cookies, lemon cookies, spumoni, shortbread. They're made with real butter and you can taste it. They also taste and smell freshly baked. Kelsey H the manager took care of me, and she was warm and welcoming! There's nothing like good service! Cookies are $4.25 for a quarter pound. Highly recommend!

    Tiramisu and cream puff

This local business clearly makes mean desserts! First off, I love that they've been around for decades. Then there's one of the best tiramisu I've ever had. It looked simpler and more plain than many I've had in the past so I had my reservations, but it had all the elements you'd expect from tiramisu, except perhaps that there's a tad more focus on the creamy filing than the sponge. And the coolness really brought out the flavour. Speaking of which, the cool cream puff had a thicker, fuller filing than usual and was a perfect appetizer for the tiramisu. They have the ambience of a 100-year-old local diner and have a variety of Italian biscuits and gelato, which means we will be back.

I had 20 minutes to kill between events downtown, and decided to take a stroll through Little Italy for a snack. I remembered seeing a note about Civitello's gelato on IG recently, and decided it was worth a shot. What a delight the small cup of pistachio was for a lunchtime treat. Four stars, but only for now. I've only visited once so I can't justify the 5-stars yet, but by the non-stop entrance of locals who entered after I sat down, requesting their favorite pastries and desserts, and time after time asking if there were any pizza slices left - I have a feeling this spot is only a few more visits away from nearing the top of my favorite local spots list. I will, no doubt, bring out-of-town visitors here in the future. While visiting I read wall postings of newpaper articles boasting of Civitello's Italian Ice speciality. It seems like an A+, family-run spot with A LOT to offer. Will be visiting again to experience more myself very soon.

If I'm not mistaken, the Civitello family started their business in the early 1920s, and it really shows in their quality. Not only is it my favorite place to get the best eclairs in the capital region, but they're also well known for their Italian ice, cookies, and sandwiches. But if you're going to swing by, do yourself a favor and pick up a couple of eclairs for dessert. They're so large, you'll probably have to cut them in half. And make sure you have a lot of napkins handy, because they're ooey, gooey, and oh so chocolatey!

Italian mix "sub" served on sliced bread
    Otis M.

Civitello's is an old school place with a lot going for it: a nice assortment of gelato in the freezer tubs, fresh made Italian pastries, terrific tomato pie (I did a comparison and I like it better than Perecca's due to a lighter, crisp crust) and a cute seating area to enjoy it all. Unfortunately, the main purpose of my visit was to order a sub, and that fell drastically short of the mark. Take a look at my photo and you'll see why. First of all, it's served on sliced Italian bread. Maybe a miscommunication? I doubt it. Who would take the classic components of a sub and not put them on a sub roll? Second, look at the sloppy assembly. (I'm getting riled up and will post a second, deconstructed photo.) Haphazard, minimal dressing on the bread. Torn leaf lettuce instead of shredded. Too-thick, randomly distributed pieces of cheese. (Incidentally, they use Fontina, not Provolone.) Uneven, sloppy distribution of meats. To top it all off, it's a poor value at $10, though you do get a bag of chips. Close to five stars without the sub, three stars with.

R Gershon's Deli (Facebook) Dear Friends of Gershon's, It is with a heavy heart that I share this news with our loyal customers, friends, staff, and extended family. I have made the incredibly difficult decision to close Geshon's Deli & Caterers. Friday, January 30th, 2026, was our final day. This decision was not made lightly as Gershon's has been an integral part of my life since I was a little girl. After my father's untimely passing, I took over with one clear mission, to honor his legacy, keep his dream alive, and continue providing quality service and "good food for good people." For more than 60 years, Gershon's has been shaped by the people who walked through our doors. Every employee, customer, client, and friend has played a role in our story and our success. Unfortunately, rising food costs, ongoing economic challenges, the lasting effects of COVID, and the loss of my final opportunity this week have left me with no other choice. To everyone who has supported me over the past nine years, thank you. Thank you for the memories, for trusting us with your celebrations, holidays, milestones, and everyday moments. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your lives, in both the joyful times and the hard ones. I will miss seeing you all more than I can put into words. On good days, they can serve one of the best sandwiches. Otherwise, I've had several occasions where I was left wondering why my pastrami sandwich was literally two pieces of bread with a small bit of pastrami - no dressing or anything else, and no questions asked. I like the attentiveness of the staff whenever we come here in person whether for diner in or takeaway, and their fresh pickles are wonderfully crunchy and worth looking forward to. They have some delicious pies, too, and the chocolate cream pie is our fave. I would go back, but the inconsistency over time certainly has dampened my enthusiasm that I may have once had.

The new owners, a couple from Schenectady, will keep the name and the menu. Bravo! It is a lot of work and long hours, but it was evident that the owners enjoyed their business and their customers, many of whom became regulars. You noticed that the food they prepared was made with love and expertise. It was consistently good. The menu has been constant over the years because it pleased customers and made the place a success. The roast beef and turkey are cooked daily. Plus, the potato salad and macaroni salad are made in house every morning by Barb. I had to stop by today to honor my memories of eating here over the years. I had a huge roast beef and turkey mix on rye with thousand island dressing and macaroni salad. Delicious as always. I took half home for my husband to enjoy. He did! My friend enjoyed a huge roast beef sandwich and a potato salad side. Even the dill pickle spears taste incredible here! It must be the yummy sandwich. We sincerely hope the quality and ambiance continue with the new owners. If that is the case, I look forward to supporting them. It is so much better than a chain restaurant.
