This restored vintage theater offers first-run and classic movies as well as full musical stage…read moreplays and nationally recognized musical acts. It's a decent size but feels intimate. Best of all, movies are only six dollars at all times. (Have you even seen that since the 70s?) Plus, they sell booze. Staff is friendly and it is one of my regular go-to entertainment spots.

We had driven up to Windsor to see…read moreanother museum, and the lady who sold the tickets there talked to us about our plans and recommended this place as very worthwhile. So, after lunch, we crossed a semi-narrow wooden bridge and drove a mile or two to this site. You park in a small lot (there was a sign for overflow parking too) and either pay there (if a ranger is on duty) or proceed to the visitors' center (where you can also pay). Augustus Saint-Gaudens was an American sculptor in the late 1800s and into the very early 1900s. I was not specifically familiar with him, but his work and that of those who trained with him was featured on a lot of U.S. coins at the time. It seems like a lot of the older coinage (before the models used now) was related to him. He also designed the Shaw Memorial on Boston Commons (related to the 54th Massacusetts regiment of black troops - see the film 'Glory' for background). From the visitors' center, there are several other areas to see. The ground slopes down towards the Connecticut River in the distance. Facing that, there is a small gallery and courtyard featuring some sculptures to your right. There is also a large sculpture of Lincoln. As you proceed towards the river, there are some works housed in spaces bordered by high hedges (including a copy of the Shaw Memorial). These end at the border to Saint-Gauden's original house, which is sometimes open for tours. When we visited, the sign just said 'wait for docent to open the door'. We later learned that this only happens between 2 - 4 p.m., which would be helpful to add to the sign. A bit below that is the studio building, which has examples of the sculptor's work and exhibits on the process of creating some. Maybe 300 yards further down is a memorial (sort of a small Greek temple) where the Saint-Gaudens' ashes (and those of several family members) are buried. It was a pretty site especially if the weather is nice. The sculptures, especially those which are outdoors, make for good photos. They also offer periodic ranger-led tours. We tagged along for part of one, but had already seen some of the areas, so we broke off and continued on our own. If you are in this area and have any interest in sculpture, this is very worthwhile.

There were a couple of reasons that we decided to check out this museum:…read more1) We both had educational and professional backgrounds involving telecommunications. 2) It was a convenient mid-way stopping point before lunch on our drive back to Boston from Vermont. The museum is in a converted house and covers the (probably expanded) main floor. The ladies who staffed the place and sold us the tickets were friendly and gave us a quick overview before starting a short orientation video. After that finished, we wandered around at our own pace. The museum was put together by some locals who had careers in telephony. Thus they had an inside track for getting obsolete equipment that was being replaced donated instead of destroyed. And once they had a core of exhibits, it was probably easier to get other items donated. The exhibits are arranged roughly chronologically. It begins with Alexander Graham Bell and moves forward. There are many old phone sets, from the wall mounted wooden variety up through a shelf of 2000s-era cell phones. They also have a number of switchboard desks showing how manual connections worked. Though most of the items displayed are phones, they also have minor side-exhibits on telephone linemen, historical oddities (what town had the last manual switchboard into the 1980s), etc. This may be somewhat of a niche museum, but I think most elementary school kids might enjoy it. If you are an adult with a general technical / engineering bent, you will also probably enjoy a stop here.

So lovely the volunteers were to make the experience enchanting. The staff who contribute to the past but in the present. We toured the fort and the outside. Highly encourage it. I returned back in to get a beautiful clay dish. That I will cherish so much. So beautifully made with love and time. The family that I purchased it from. It was a very congenial group, and the staff who assisted were also warm and welcoming. After a short talk about the traditional ways of making the snow snakes, there was information on the current plans to include other Native bands in competitive games in early 2023. Everyone in the workshop was invited to sign up for the online newsletter so they would know when it was happening. It was an enjoyable and informative 2 hours!
