So. It's a long story but worth the read if you are truly planning on paying the high tuition to attend Clark. I will provide truthful yet frightening details on why Clark may not be the ideal place for you based on how employees are treated by Clark "leadership" and the culture that provides. Please keep in mind that I was both a student and a full-time employee so I have a strong understanding of the Clark experience on both sides. A short while ago, I resigned from my position at Clark University. I never thought I would quit my job at Clark. I loved it. I loved Clark as a student and I loved it as an employee. I thought I found the perfect place to establish a career and grow as a professional...maybe a place that I would stay for years. That all changed once President Fithian hired Provost Royo and together they decided to merge Academic Affairs and Student Affairs led up by a very ignorant and toxic team of "deans". It's not the merging of the two worlds that tarnished my whole experience. I support any and all initiatives that would benefit our students. What did destroy my ability to continue to work at Clark was the fact that they were putting arrogant "deans" with zero experience in charge of most career-related and academic support departments all while passively forcing great, experienced, knowledgeable and deserving leadership out the door. I literally felt like I worked in a banana republic. It was very obvious how these so-called "deans" had no clue about anything they were now trying to lead up and demanding respect for. There is quite a significant difference between student affairs and academic affairs and bringing in a new "leader/s" that have absolutely no idea what your job is and then demanding that you explain to them exactly what you do and how you do it, is simply wrong and quite frankly, degrading. It's also very obnoxious when your new "leader" throws a very public tantrum because there are rumors that certain members of the team do not like or respect them. The fault with this new team of "deans" in leadership is that they are all awful and when I say awful, I mean people that you do not want making any sort of impression on your child (really, a non-issue because these "deans" are too busy in meetings congratulating and patting each other on the backs). Not only are they completely ignorant to their professional roles, they are just plain rude, cold and seemingly, heartless. I could immediately see that they cared more about control and un-earned respect than actually doing anything positive for the university or the students. These so-called leaders even gave themselves promotions and raises while the rest of us were left to eat cake, if we were lucky. Truly! The entirety of the division had to wait for some "external compensation equity study" to determine if we were worthy of a $2000-$3000 raise but the "deans" have the authority to create dean positions and promotions for themselves out of thin air. Does this sound like equality to you? It's ironic because Clark loves to brag about and promote how they support Diversity, EQUITY and Inclusion...but only in the classroom, apparently. Total hypocrisy! Life as a student was great for me....some of the best days of my life thus far and I miss my time as a student, everyday. But I do have to say that my relationships with staff and faculty were very important to my Clark experience. In the current staff climate, I cannot imagine being guided in any positive direction with an entire division of employees being held hostage by a team of self-righteous "deans". They think we should feel lucky to have a job at all. Toxic positivity at its finest. I encourage you to think long and hard about whether or not a college or university can truly provide you with an exceptional education when the "leadership" treats their staff like livestock. While I was a student at Clark, I was taught to take care of those who cannot take care of themselves. I was also taught to fight for justice and equality in all aspects of my life. I may be a little person but I am a loud voice and I will continue to to be a loud voice until Clark gets its act together as it relates to employee respect and equality. Professional staff should be unionized to protect against leadership bullying like this. And as an alumnus, I cannot fathom donating a penny to Clark until their integrity in this area is restored. If this is how student workers are treated, imagine what the full-time staff must tolerate. A hidden gem in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester. I've been here a few times to attend recruiting and outreach events. The campus is a beautiful oasis in the midst of a fascinating eclectic neighborhood. The vibe on the campus is liberal and welcoming. Every person I have encountered, whether faculty, staff or students, has been friendly and helpful. Not sure I'd be willing to pay actual tuition for a degree, but for a campus to attend events, it is top notch. read more

I loved Clark when I was there. They were known for accepting the B student with varied outside interests who wanted to be in their community and make it better. It was filled with hippies, and while I don't generally love people who don't shower, it gave the school a great vibe and diversity that helped me grow out of my white suburbia childhood. I got my BA and M.Ed from Clark and loved it. I was a tour guide and wanted to share my love for my school with others and help them get there. But it get four stars because, in my last year or two, Clark changed. It became less diversity focused, it became more money hungry. Clark focused less on education (my major) and psychology and more on science. There isn't anything wrong with that, except Clark did it to get in students who would make more money (doctors) who would donate more money down the road than teachers. I still get calls to donate money to Clark, meanwhile I will be paying loans on ever increasing tuition until 2030. read more

I got my BA and MS at Clark so I'm obviously biased, but it's a fantastic school. I have always been glad I chose to go there. The professors are all excellent, not to mention expert. Lame mottos aside, you really will be challanged and will think about the world a little differently when you leave. Sports, however, are not a big thing at Clark (D3), though I can tell you first hand that the volleyball coach is awesome (a friend)! I didn't even know our mascot was "Cougars" until first semester was almost over. Great school. Loved the campus. Really felt at home and really was the best four years of my life. However, they are a bit money hungry these days and I no longer feel the changes are for "the greater good" but more for "the greater good of their wallet." In all honesty, their administration is really disrespectful to the classes of the last decade, claiming they are not doing much with their lives and that we are putting a strain on the economy. We really are trying our best, it's the economy that's putting a strain on us. For a school that has so many alumni connections, you would think they would be nicer to us. read more

ahhhhh . . . my alama mater. fiat lux. i think that's latin for keg stand. what can i say? i had a great time at clark. some of it's a bit fuzzy, but i'm told it was 4 years. at the end, they gave me an extremely warm bottle of champagne that had previously been passed amongst my peers (many of whom i had never seen before) and a piece of paper. i skipped the champagne. i had the piece of paper framed. not sure where i'd be if i had to rely on that victorian lit. major/philosophy minor, but i don't, so. . . . decent curriculum, approachable, accessible professors, dangerous townies, dives dives everywhere and plenty to drink. oh yeah, and spree day. if you don't know, you betta' ask somebody. read more

I really love clark...i went there for my undergrad. But i do agree with other reviews, like most institutions, clark seems to be more money hungry, accepting anyone. I really liked the diversity clark had when i started..but it seemed to have shifted towards the end of my time there. read more

Been here twice for work related things. Seems like a pretty good campus. Worcester is much bigger than most people realize but Clark is a small liberal arts school. Clark competes with Holy Cross which is also a liberal arts school. Not that that's a bad thing. Very different vibe between the two schools. read more

Clark charged my life. I have the fondest memories of my time there, and miss it!! They have been doing major updates to the campus worth brand nce building and renovations. Okay. I have perspective because Clark was my 3rd undergraduate school. yeah you heard that right. I spent my freshman year at Middlebury, then did a stint at Mitchell to raise my GPA. So I spent 2 1/2 years at Clark. I was an art history major when I transferred but in the fall of my senior year I hit a road block because the department was small and 2/3 of the professors were on sabbatical. So instead of dealing with it, I switched majors and became a geography major. It was one of the best things I've ever done. I LOVED geography. The geography department is excellent. It's been 16 years since I graduated so I can't make any assessments about the area around Clark. My professors were always approachable but I didn't take advantage of that. read more

Don't get me wrong, I love Clark because of its lifestyle and community feel but as an academic institution, let's not get it twisted folks. Clark has fallen from rank 60ish to now rank 96 I believe. That's a plummet... that's just horrible and it's reflective based on their program of professors. It's a research university so the level of interest is split for professors and a lot of the notable ones like George Gendron have left. It has sold out to its business side of being a university, the bookstore is robbing people daily and the school helps them. Furthermore there has been more emphasis on attracting more students or wealthier students as well. I was drawn to Clark because I felt that the learning would be very personal and would really make some changes, some of it has and some of it hasn't, and that's to be expected but that doesn't mean I'm not shocked by the lack of will in the professors. Most of them really just don't care especially if they have a tenure, and it's sad because they're just so bloody awful. I also don't know how Clark manages to scrummage up so many introverts and wall flowers, lots of "different" kids at the school. read more

Full disclosure: I teach at this school. (Of course, it's worth pointing out that in my experience teaching at an institution of higher education doesn't often correlate with positive attitudes toward that institution. I have many friends at other schools who loathe where they teach. In any case...) I love Clark University. The students are great. They are diverse and charming. To be sure, many are undisciplined academically when they first arrive. But even so, on the whole, they are excited to be learning and excited to be in class. The atmosphere is relaxed and positive. Pretty much everyone I know at Clark -- students, faculty, and staff -- are very happy to be there. (I know I am.) The associations between students and faculty are particularly strong. I've been at several different institutions of higher learning (as a students, as a graduate student, and as a member of the faculty), and at larger schools especially, it is easy for students to get lost in the shuffle and to feel pretty anonymous. It is also quite common at many colleges and universities for professors to focus on their own research very much at the expense of their classes. Not so at Clark. Even though the faculty is very serious about research and scholarship, I have been amazed and impressed at how much value is placed on excellence in teaching and on cultivating strong personal connections with students. At the risk of sounding cheesy, it is inspiring. So glad I ended up at this school. read more
