Personally, I have a like/hate relationship with the gym... not just this gym, but any gym lol…read more However, I like my trainer Megan, there are several staff members I've interacted with and all of them have been incredibly helpful and kind. Donald was someone who helped me my first day at the gym and took the time to give me a run through of some stuff I can do. Getting myself in the gym is hard but I do feel like I picked a great gym in Santa Cruz because I can get help if I need it. I will admit everyone at this gym is built, like I don't know where all the out of shape people are but I must miss them. ‍ That can be very intimidating but at the same time... it is a gym. The facilities are clean and I feel like they have a variety of machines I couldn't find at other places. The membership price point was surprisingly competitive for what they have to offer. I appreciate the simple payment system and charge card being on file, I can come to the gym without my wallet!‍ Overall a great place, it's just going to take me actually sticking with it.

Over the last 8 years, I gained 35 lbs and repeatedly and frustratingly tried to get back to my old…read morefitness level and shape. (Don't worry - I'm not peddling diet pills) I used to do CrossFit, Zumba and yoga before we moved back to CA, and moving home put me back in old work-all-the-time habits, and I slowly lost my fitness level to the point where I didn't recognize myself at first in pictures. I tried jumping back into CrossFit, but always started out too heavy on the lifting and would hurt my lower back. I also overextended my wrist in yoga, and was afraid of repeat injury. On the weekends I walked, but getting out of a chair or bending over to pick up something off the ground was painful. And I carried a lot of shame about this because there was no excuse not to be fit - I'm married to a CrossFit coach and my cousin is a competitive bikini fitness person and I have a huge community of incredible coach friends! Even with all these brilliant resources, I was unable to shift. On one of my phone scrolling rabbit hole adventures, I discovered the Camino de Santiago in Spain..a pilgrimage that takes 30 days to cross...and FINALLY, I found something to train for!!!! My cousin paired me up with a personal trainer, Alec. He's an ex-marine fitness coach training to be a chiropractor, AND he had to do a bunch of crazy hikes while in service, so he was a perfect fit! AND he wasn't a family member! I told him all my injuries and how afraid I was of repeatedly getting hurt. We started with balance and core stabilization. Then lots of movements to wake up my core and get my muscle memory back. I shared my old favorite CrossFit movements (KBs, lunges, wallballs, deadlifts, back squats, rowing) and how I miss yoga, and he started working these elements into our sessions as well. Because he's in school to become a chiropractor, he can tell from my movements when I'm compensating for an old injury - and he has shown me how to stay in uncomfortable positions and lessen my fear of getting hurt. He also has studied a lot about trauma and helped show balancing movements to recenter when my body goes into fight and flight mode. And in every session, I learn a movement that will help me prepare for the pilgrimage! Slowly, I'm getting back into my favorite yoga poses and perfecting my form on my lifts. It feels really good to be physically alive again.
