I'm at work and I casually reference Jesse James to a co-worker and he asks - "Who is Jesse…read moreJames?". I couldn't believe that anyone didn't know about JJ, but growing up in Samoa without a TV left my friend out of the loop. I immediately told him - "Saturday we are educating you on a local legend that became internationally renown". My friend, his wife and I arrived at noon on a Saturday and paid $6 each for the bank museum tour. The guide was very friendly and laid a deep explanation of what Clay County and the James family were experiencing during and right after the Civil War. The weather the day of the robbery, the layout of the Liberty square, the medical and mental state of Jesse, who the bankers were and their reactions and actions all told while you see the clock set to the exact time and date of the event, hear the old wooden floor creak beneath you and are surrounded by artifacts or replica's of the items originally inside the bank; the description makes you feel that you are a witness to America's 1st daylight bank robbery. My friend and his wife are now sold on the legend of The James Family and want to see the house museums in Kearney and St. Joe now. A great inexpensive way to spend an hour or so and relive some of the areas infamous past. They also have a backroom with family and area artifacts. The gift shop is free to enter and shouldn't be missed by anyone traveling thru even if you don't have time for the tour.

The Jesse James Bank Museum is pretty darn cool. It was the site of the first daytime bank…read morerobbery, which was executed by members of the James gang. I had read about this robbery in a book, I believe, and now I was able to stand in the old bank building itself, which was really cool. They have restored it to the way it would have looked back in those days, and it's a great little stop to soak in some history of the area in and around Liberty. The woman who gave the tour was extremely friendly and enthusiastic about answering questions and talking about the history of the place. It made us want to further explore the James sites in the area, in Kearney and around Clay County. Having read about Jesse James and his terrorist gangs and how he came of age participating in the hatred, violence and strife during the Civil War and the period following, it's really interesting to physically be in the area and see some of these landmarks with your own eyes. Jesse James was not a hero, even though he's now somewhat romanticized as such. There is a lot of information in the back room of the museum, which displays some really great photos, documents and trinkets from the era. Up front is a gift shop and then there is the main bank room, with its vault open. You can really get a sense of place when you're here, and it's easy to imagine two bushwackers coming in and threatening the lives of the unarmed bankers. Bank robberies are a dime a dozen in movies, but when you see something like this in person it's very arresting. It's a cool experience. I would recommend the Jesse James Bank Museum to anyone with an interest in Missouri or American history. It's very affordable ($6 for adults, $3.50 for kids) and a pleasant and informative way to spend an hour or two. This location is a nationally registered historic place, so pitch in and help keep it going.

I attended a holiday pop-up event here this weekend. I had not visited Belvoir before, but I was…read morevery familiar with the property. My last visit came in 1972 when the property was used as a nursing home by The Odd Fellows fraternal organization, where my grandmother spent the last few years of her life. Prior to that it was an orphanage and for a short time a school - which my older siblings attended in the late 1950's. The winery has done a great job of preserving the history of the main building - one of four structures on the campus. Walking up the old wooden staircase to the second floor brought back instant memories of taking that same staircase to visit a woman that lived there. The nurses told us she claimed to be a relative of Frank and Jesse James, so 8 year old me convinced my mom for us to go visit her. I still recall her small and frail bedridden body holding my hand and thanking me for visiting her. My paternal grandmother lived in the adjacent building. It still sits vacant and deteriorating after decades of abandonment. It is the newest of the 4 structures on the campus having been built in 1955. Her solitary room was first floor left front of the building. I remember walking in and always talking to the nurses and aides at the station at the door. I remember taking presents of clothes and food on Sundays and holidays or just returning her laundry. I remember helping to decorate the room for the holidays. I remember the metal hand bell she used to summon assistance. I remember the beautiful large tree on the circle drive near her building that still stands today. The interior is vandalized and graffitied with no trespassing signs in place, and the windows she spent hours looking out of are now broken, blocked by rogue shrubs and a rusted and collapsing awning. The last time I peered in this window was sometime in 1972 to wave to her as we exited and let her know we'd be back soon. I highly encourage anyone to visit and support this winery and Inn. Check out the sitting rooms, look at the artifacts, documents and photos. Visit "George' the resident skeleton in his glass tomb... and if you listen carefully you might just hear my grandmother's small brass handbell.

You can also sit outside on the side porch on a beautiful day. I love that they embrace the full history of the estate & try to preserve the history as well as making new memories there. I like to bring family & friends to the Belvoir, who've traveled to the area since it's such a unique place to go in the KC metroplex. I highly recommend a visit to the Belvoir!

The people who stay at Inn at 425 appreciate the beauty of the turn of the century decorations and they love Kansas City. Great conversation! Our stay at 425 was a special time of our trip which we valued as equal to any of the attractions of KC. It was to converse and get to know Stephan and Carl, the owners. Here are the details: - This is a fine location that is close to attractions of KC: WWI Museum, Truman Library and Steamboat Arabia exhibit were our favorites. - Taking Lyft to dinner is quick and easy. (We enjoyed Q29 BBQ.) - The details I appreciated: coddled eggs served in beautiful coddlers, quality cutlery being placed perfectly (knife side in!), tasteful placement of antiques that give the room warmth and character. - Clean! I mused the bathroom floor was clean enough to eat off of... but I did not. - Attentive service! I brought back a six pack of ale and put into the cooler. At that time, there were only wine glasses standing by, but in the morning, Weizen glasses appeared in the collection. - I can't say enough of the quality! The food was real! Thick slices of real ham, fresh fruit; and even the capers were high end. There is a lot to see and do in KC. Sofie and I look forward to returning to the Inn at 425 to see our new friends Stephen and Carl! Maybe we will take a day and just sit out in the garden at 425. It's that kind of place!

Ten of us recently rented out the whole Inn for a Junior High School reunion. Carl and Stephan worked hard to make sure everything was just right for us. The Inn At 425 was such a fabulous venue for our get together, I can hardly wait to bring my husband back for a romantic weekend. Carl and Stephan, you ROCK!!! With Love, Beth and the Girls
