The class itself was nice, I did a 1 day workshop. The instructions were like a teach and see then do. She showed us what to do then did it step by step with us which was really easy to follow and whenever we messed up she came and helped us and was very encouraging. Here comes the but, I was super disappointed and dissatisfied that I wasn't able to make what I wanted. I told my instructor several times that I wanted to create a bowl similar to how someone else made theirs and that was my goal and she encouraged me to go for it and would assist me if I needed her help. When her assistance was needed to widen the bowl to my desire she simply ignored what I asked. I even told her "oh I wanted it bigger" to which she replied "oh it's fine". The bowl was literally 1/3 size of what the other student made. I feel like it was a waste of my time and money to even do this workshop if the instructor wasn't going to help when she said she would and I didn't get to create something I wanted. read more

I loved it. For years I've been saying I wanted to take a pottery class and this was exactly the right first step. I attended Muddy Saturdays, it is an adult only class on a Saturday morning where they teach you the basics of using the wheel and basically getting comfortable with clay. It's an art place, so I will give it a star for that. For my birthday gift to myself, I signed my husband and I up for a muddy fun class based off of the following website description: "Clayworks hosts one-day Saturday classes for beginner adults to discover the fun of clay and wheel-throwing. Pre-registration is required and there is a $15 fee to cover materials." At this same time, we had planned a trip back home to see family, and cut the trip a day short to make the class. I was SO excited for my first pottery making class on the wheel. A little over 48 hours before the start of the event, we receive an email that nothing will be 'fired', the 2 hour class is just for us to experience the wheel. Are you kidding me? Two days before, you mention this for the FIRST time? Two hours for nothing I can take home? And THAT'S how you phrase it? So I called the morning of, after a hectic week of travel, having read the sentence they nonchalantly wedged in their email, and the person who answered the phone responded that I was correct: we would be throwing clay for two hours with nothing to show for--she simply asked our name so she could take us off of the list. Thanks for your utter lack of transparency, and failure to take accountability, Clayworks. If I wanted to throw clay around for 2 hours, I would do it from the comfort of my own home read more

I've been going to clayworks for almost a year now. The staff (Kim) is extremely helpful and always eager to make sure your experience is top-notch. My instructors have been Danielle Lockhart and Susan Hendley. They have made me into the pottery geek that I am today. The education you receive at Clayworks is invaluable. And although it does not come with any sort of certificate of achievement or diploma at the end of a program, the work that is produced is its own reward. They conduct surveys at the end of courses to constantly improve their services and work closely with the community to reach those who need art as an outlet of expression when it wouldn't normally be available to them. I love all that they do with outreach while involving those students who also want to participate. For example, they recycle clay that has been discarded and allow students to make bowls for community projects. I have made over 15 bowls with the outreach program that has gone to deserving homes in the community. If you want a quick experience with a group from work, they do that as well. It's worth every penny you spend here! I hope to see you in the studio, and don't be afraid to talk to other artists. It isn't a library, it's an art studio where inspiration can be found with the simplest of human encounters. read more

This was a unique and amazing plus fun experience. One of my girls planned this as our girls night/birthday celebration and I'm glad she did. The class is an interesting and interacting experience with a lot of washing your hands. Danielle(our instructor) was so cool and helpful, it was 6 to 1 and she helped each and every one of us when asked and didn't mind repeating herself. She was very encouraging of some of our beginning works even though they probably looked a hot mess. Lol. But she did come and assist us to fix things and for me help was 65/35 with me being 35 but I'm cool with that. My next time going I'll be a pro at this. The pricing is super cheap for the experience. You get to make two pieces for like 35$ AND you can BYOB which for my Circle is a must!!!! Oh when you're done you go in the back room to pick out the color you want for your piece(Clayworks) does the actual applying then you come back in a few weeks to pick up your masterpiece read more

If you're thinking about taking a class or workshop, do it! The classes are all-inclusive and the studio provides the instruction, clay and glazes, firing, etc. You also have 24-7 access to the studio should you want to come in and work on your pieces in between classes. It's an incredible value for the amount of resources they provide. The studio and instructors are very pleasant and beginner friendly. The studio is well organized and kept tidy. While it may rank as the fourth largest ceramic arts educational non profit in the USA, Clayworks is as intimate and friendly as an arts environment can be. I've tried to learn ceramics before, but these were the best classes I've ever had in the field. Friendly, skilled, and helpful instructors, lots of options, comfortable facilities. They are very good at encouraging your own creativity, but also teaching effective skills and procedures. Lots of good explanations and lots of laughter and friendship. read more
