I used Yelp in addition to Google to find service providers. The majority of the service providers neglected to return my telephone calls after leaving voicemails or replying to my descriptive emails inquiring about obtaining a quote. One service provider told me he was too busy right now and referred me to another company that neglected to show-up for a scheduled appointment for a hardscaping project that I needed done; to say the least, I didn't bother calling that company. Al Taylor, from Sam's Tree Service, came to my home and provided a quote via email. The job included the removal of a pine tree stump that stood about 1.5' above ground, the removal of a birch tree with its stump that stood about 9' High (a previous cut down job performed inadequately since new growth was sprouting from the top and sides), and a bush with its roots that was about 9' high and 6' round. I agreed to Al's reasonable quote via email. The next day, another tree service, that I forgot about came to my home and provided me with a quote that was $10 more than Sam's Tree Service, however, it included filling in the holes that would be left after removing the stumps and bush. I never contemplated this issue since I know nothing about the industry. I told him that I would consider his quote with the other quotes and let him know if I decide to use his company. I immediately emailed Al and discussed the issue with Al who informed me that his quote did not include filling the holes with screened top soil, but would do it for the $10 difference. I agreed to the new terms. His team arrived and easily completed the job. However, they did not fill the holes. I called and left a voicemail indicating that I expected the holes to be filled as agreed upon. I also sent an email with pictures of the holes. Someone from Sam's Tree Service left me a voicemail indicating that they were aware that the holes were not filled in because they did not have screened top soil at the time and would be back to complete the job. The following day, the crew returned and filled the holes. In addition, they filled the track that was dug up by my electrical contractor without my knowledge, which was unexpected, above and beyond their scope of duties. I would highly recommend using Sam's Tree Service for all your tree, stump, and bush services. Their crew does an exceptional and professional service at reasonable rates.

A crew responded and cleared the line by plunging the outside clean-out. They were on site for about 30 minutes, and the visit cost $180. I appreciated their quick response and the referral to a restoration company, which arrived within three hours to begin cleanup. Unfortunately, last Thursday night--after a week-long restoration process--the same problem occurred. The next morning, Shrewsbury Plumbing & Heating returned. They snaked the main drain and restored flow. I asked whether there would be a charge since this was the same issue occurring so soon after their first visit, and I was told to call Stan on Monday when he returned from vacation. That visit cost $279. This Tuesday, yet again, we experienced a sewage backup. I called and spoke with Stan, who informed me that the company does not guarantee sewage backup repairs. I asked why a camera inspection wasn't done during the first or second visit, and he explained that they first attempt less involved methods. In hindsight, the initial response amounted to short-term fixes that did not identify the root cause--while generating additional service charges. On this third visit, the crew worked hard and ultimately used a camera to discover a stick lodged in the main drain, which they removed. This visit cost $444. I understand that not every issue is obvious on the first attempt. However, when I call a professional for a problem I cannot resolve myself, I expect that the goal is to fully diagnose and eliminate the cause--not to take incremental steps that allow the condition to recur. I am a career firefighter, and when someone's house is on fire, we take extra measures to prevent a rekindle. That is part of delivering competent and responsible service. Given the nature of a main sewer line blockage and the costs involved per visit, camera inspection should be a standard early step--not a last resort after multiple failures. My criticism is not aimed at the technicians who came to my home; Steve and Nate, in particular, were professional and worked hard. My concern is with management decisions and the lack of clear procedures that prioritize resolving the issue correctly the first time. If a camera had been used during the first visit, this issue could likely have been resolved immediately--saving significant time, stress, and expense. I am writing this review to encourage a more customer-focused approach moving forward. The rating associated with this review reflects management practices, not the field crews who responded.
