More of a triangle than a square, the center of Market Square holds the band rotunda Cleghorn Memorial. It dates back to 1889 when the Blenheim Borough Council voted on it. On Christmas Eve, the Garrison Band played and marked the first official use of the band gazebo.
In 1903, the rotunda was completed and named the Cleghorn Memorial to commemorate Blenheim's famous medical practitioner George Cleghorn, born in India and qualified as M.D. at St. Thomas's Hospital, London. He continued to practice here in Blenheim from 1876 until he sold his practice. He passed in 1902.
The rotunda was built as tribute with the fancy iron work made in Canada and the three lamps imported from England. On its platform have stood almost every Governor General, every Mayor, Royalty, Lords and Ladies, Statesmen, Generals. Sportsmen and all manner of notable men and women. Every important occasion has seen crowds gather in Market Place. Declarations of peace after three major wars were celebrated with dancing and singing around the rotunda.
