Run by a lovely older couple who sit amongst the towers of fabric rolls and racks of ribbon and laces while you browse, this is a treasure trove for anyone who sews or is crafty with fabrics. It looks a little dusty and you might feel like you've stepped through a portal into a little old shop in a European village in 1960, but there are prices to almost match. If you collect buttons, I'm sure there are some old gems here. I'm not particularly crafty, but head here whenever I need ribon or lace, usually buying metres of it to wrap presents because it's cheaper and less painful than extracting money through my nose at the newsagents to pay Mr John Sands - who is he anyway?

What drew me into it on this fine day was a stunning, vintage-inspired dress in the shop window. It was so pretty it practically called to me and I had to go in for a closer look. Unfortunately, they did not have it in my size but the friendly staff promised me they would get similar ones in again soon. The shop was very affordable with very pretty dresses from around $40 and up, practically unheard of these days. They had a great range of funky and vintage-inspired stuff as well as ladies hand bags to choose from. From the outside this shop does not look like much, with its outdated signage and off street location. But I am telling you to go in for a look and you will be surprised by the quality and the price of what is on offer.

There was a lot of vintage jewellery and outfits in the window of the arcade and I thought it was very pretty personally. Upon entering, with prices around the mid $50 range on average, it is hard to believe you can enter this store with the intent on finding some sort of vintage party dress and not leave with one. The prices are very good, the quality is comparable to that of David Jones or Myer where you would pay close to $200. Why would you do that after finding this place? Some of the dresses are very very beautiful and much care has been taken to preserve them and keep them in good condition here. A lot of care has been taken in making them and it's always good to steer away from the classic brands and delve into something a little bit more magnificent.

They don't have as big a range of beads as a wholesalers does, but never mind that, there's enough beads there for everyone. They sell your semi precious strings (between $10- $100 depending on what you want), glass and recycled glass, plastic, wooden, bone, seed, coral beads as well as crystals and imitation pearls. The way the system works is that you take a small tray that is divided into nine sections. You collect your beads in your tray, and then you can either choose to make your creation on the spot, enlisting the help of the talented staff, or take your individual bits and pieces home with you. The purpose of the tray is so you can see what goes together with what, and so the staff can add up the prices efficiently. When the staff aren't serving you, they're making beaded creations at the counter themselves. There is a long wall of cabinets filled with creations that have been made in house that you can buy, or you can use them as inspiration for your own pieces. This place is great fun, and the staff are lovely. Come in and walk out with something uniquely yours after a day in the city.

I think these beads are amongst the most beautiful I've ever seen. However, they're very expensive. This is to be expected, though, given that Beads and Beads imports semi-precious stone beads and fresh water pearls. These are quality beads. Therefore, they're for the hardcore bead aficionado. (I do suspect such people exist, presumably to make their own top-quality jewellery. Given how cheap, however, beautiful bead bracelets are nowadays, I'd think it would cost a lot more to make jewellery from these items than to buy the item already made. Thousand Island Dressing is a store that comes to mind, though Beads and Beads' offerings may be slightly higher-end.) For someone like me - who occasionally makes their own jewellery, but not often and not passionately - this store isn't up my alley. I like to look at the beads, and if someone threw some my way I'd be delighted, but I've never bought any.

For quite a small shop, they squeeze a lot in and have a good range of basic cottons, satins, and stretch fabrics as well as some fancier silks and dress fabrics. I've never really found fabrics in there that stir up my imagination, but did, on a couple of occasions, buy some toga material from there during my uni days when I couldn't be bothered crossing Moggill Road to get to Spotlight. The fabric in Sckafs is a bit too nice and a bit too pricey to be used for togas, but it did the trick. The thing about Sckafs in this location is that they have to compete not only with Spotlight across the road, undercutting pretty much everyone on price in the fabric industry, but also with Gardam's Fabrics, a shop that specialises in the more expensive fabrics and really do stock a beautiful range in a spacious store. Spotlight and Gardam's get my business before Sckafs as I find their ranges of fabric more interesting. But, again, it's handy to have a fabric store that is actually within the Indooroopilly Shopping Centre.

They have a lot of material to choose from and usually there are some really good steals in the bargain bin from $1.99 a meter for silky soft fabric. In store you'll find a huge range of beautiful handcrafted items from across the globe, fair trade coffee and treats, a range of books including children's titles and cookbooks, beautiful home wares, toys, various apparel items, gift cards that support numerous causes (the 'Oxfam Unwrapped' range and tax deductible), jewellery, and Cd's. You will always find something unique and original here. The prices in store range from fairly cheap to moderately expensive, but it's well worth it.

I was so glad to see that this shop had just relocated and hadn't closed for good, because I've purchased many a gift from Essensuals and it's always been perfect for those people who are difficult to buy for. I must say though, I much prefer the old store to the new one. I'm not sure if it has changed hands or they just decided to change it up a little bit, but it was a little disappointing. The new store seems to have stock piled up everywhere, like a teetering tower of doom that could crush the shopper below at any second. It also seems like they don't have as much stock as before, which is unfortunate because you could find things for both men and women in the old store, whereas the new one appears to be very female oriented. Despite the disappointment that Essensuals has changed quite a bit, it's still full of pretty things like crystal wine glasses, decorative trunks and vintage perfume bottles. It's worth a look if you're not quite sure what you're looking for, but certainly isn't as impressive as it used to be.

Looking around I had no idea of what to get but the sales manager Hao was a great help. She asked me about the person I was buying for and the money I had, tried to get me thinking on what my friend liked as collectables. Then finally we found a beautiful ink pen set with quill and pot. When he opened his present we was amazed and thankful and told me it was one of the most original gifts he had ever received.

The quality of the products is top notch and the interesting way the gifts are wrapped make it seem like you have put in a lot of effort. After my first visit to Kim + Judi led to a well received present for my brother on his thirtieth birthday (a clock in a clear spherical glass which allowed you to see the inner workings) I have made a habit of stopping in when stumped of present ideas. The mother and daughter team who own it (not sure who is Kim and who is Judy) have been nothing but helpful and gave reliable advice to this very confused shopper. It didn't escape my attention, either, that on each separate visit there have been new products which is always a good sign for a gifts store such as this. Being a bit of a novice with stores like this one I am always sure to bring a girl along with me as they tend to love the place and are better at separating the wheat from the chaff than myself.
