Plattsburgh was the site of Battle of Valcour Island in 1776, one of the first naval battles of the Revolutionary War. It was also the site of the Battle of Plattsburgh which took place in September 1814 where the United States victory ended the final British invasion of the northern states. Plattsburgh was founded by Zephaniah Platt in 1785 and incorporated in 1815. City Hall was designed by architect John Russell Pope, who was also responsible for the the National Archives and Records Administration building (completed in 1935), the Jefferson Memorial (completed in 1943) and the West Building of the National Gallery of Art (completed in 1941). This was one of his earlier works, constructed in 1917. The Classical Revival style features a projecting entrance portico with six Doric columns. I spent a couple of days here, exploring and enjoying the hospitality of the town. There are some excellent beer breweries, some great coffee and of course, the New York harbor for the Lake Champlain ferry to Vermont. In July, the temperatures are fabulous. As I…read moreusually travel in the South, I generally encounter Civil War markers and sometimes Revolutionary War markers. So it was interesting to spot this one from the War of 1812. The marker reads, "On Sept. 6, 1814 the left wing of the British Army, on its invasion route to Plattsburgh, passed here. It fired upon this house, according to tradition, thinking it to be a fort." The marker has both English and French. It reads in English, "City Fire Department Horicon Hall-1902. This was the location of the city fire department established in 1902. The former station building itself initially served at Plattsburgh's Town Hall built in the 1860's." And in French, "C'est la que se trouvait le service d'incendie de la ville, cree en 1902. Burlington, Vermont is one of my top 3 happy places! I have lived in New York and California, I've…read moreseen some really beautiful places in those states, but this spot has my heart forever. The beautiful mountains and the lake just make me smile! This college town has a fairly liberal vibe and most residents love Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders, who used to be the mayor of this city. Church Street is always a must do, this is Burlington's pedestrian friendly shopping and dining district. It's a bit like Santa Monica's Third St Promenade in Los Angeles. This area is quite lively most of the time, but if you wander a block or two away, you will find some better priced restaurants. For a small city in a mostly rural state, I'd consider this a foodie town. One of my more recent discoveries up here is the delicious hard cider! I highly recommend visiting Citizen's Cider, so tasty! If you love the outdoors, this is the place to be! This region features skiing, hiking, water sports and a host of other outdoor activities. They have some great biking trails here as well! In my opinion, one of the top notch east coast ski resorts (Stowe) is located within 1 hour of here. Heck, even if it's not ski season, it's nice to head over there for a gondola ride, hard cider breweries, cheese tastings, hikes and more. I love to end my day down by the lake watching the sunset! Grab a drink at Splash at the Boathouse or just chill near the rocks and watch the sun go down behind the mountains. I currently live in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami area, a location packed with too many angry people, so now it's even more of a treat to come to serene Burlington! This place is amazing, so many friendly faces and a nice laid back vibe.

Every time I talk to someone from Burlington, they are always friendly and willing to help in any way that they can. You wouldn't think so with the weather they get here in the winter, but it doesn't seem like the bitter cold makes anyone here bitter or mean. University of Vermont makes up a lot of this city and I am glad it does, it encourages people living in the area to go to a great school despite the surburban feel of Vermont. Burlington, don't lose your charm.

On the northwest corner of Burlington's City Hall Park, this granite monument was erected in 1907…read moreto commemorate those who died fighting during the Civil War. The monument is 17 feet tall and is crowned with an eagle grasping the American flag. The inscriptions read, "Erected by Stannard Womans Relief Corps in memory of our soldier and sailor dead 1861-1865." and "In honor of the brave men who victoriously defended the Union on land and sea during the war of the Great Rebellion." Each of the four sides is adorned with the symbols of the four branches of military that participated in the Civil War; artillery, cavalry, navy and army. The Stannard Woman's Relief Corps is the Vermont chapter of the Woman's Relief Corps, named after General George J Stannard who was noteworthy for his valor on the battlefield during the Civil War. It is in a small highway pull out where you can stop to appreciate the view, think about what it was like before there was a ferry and a highway, and enjoy. The marker reads, "These islands were first seen by a European in 1609, when Samuel De Champlain explored the Lake which bears his name and claimed them for the King of France. Ceded in 1763 to Britain, they became part of the Royal Colony of New York. After 1776, several American Revolutionary heroes received Land Grants here, and two islands were so named. In 1783 this area joined the Free and Independent Republic of Vermont. Here is history and legend of the famous Allen family, the Green Mountain Boys, Rogers' Rangers and many others."
