History buffs should probably take a tour, but I was more interested in walking the grounds. I took a one hour train ride from Toulouse. I recommend staying elsewhere and visiting the castle as the city itself is not a stand out culturally and architecturally. From the SNCF station it is about a one mile walk to the Narbonne Gate in the Old City. I used AllTrails to navigate the castle as it is large and it is hard to distinguish where you are otherewise. It took me 90 minutes to walk the circumference of the lower outer gates and the inner city. The castle is FREE but the ramparts are ticketed. Advice: Everyone told me the food is not good here so pack a lunch and eat at the walls or the park at the gate. Many restaurants in the city if you choose otherwise. Sunscreen if it is a sunny day. If you take the train, there are markets along the way even on Sun.

Drive towards St-Cyprien but take the bus back (or drive back on Pont Saint-Michel, upstream). Best pictures are from taken from Quai de Tounis or the opening Avenue de la Garonette, downstairs from Rue du Pont de Tounis. At night, the bridge is enlighted and the nicest colour is green, in my opinion. At night, later, especially on Thursdays, the area benefits from the Bar Les Filochards, showing live concerts and attracting lots of the local mixed youth. You can take your drink out in a plastic cup and drink it up on the Pont Neuf.

It is a very sweet bridge with a lovely park below. It gives you a sense of the paths one had to take to cross over bodies of water centuries ago. Douze arches constituent la totalité de cet ouvrage médiéval, les diamètres d'ouverture de ces arches ne pas identiques, on peut ainsi penser qu'il a été construit au fur et à mesure et selon les moyens et les ressources. Aujourd'hui le pont ne possède plus que huit arches, il demeure une balade agréable et surtout un point de vue sur la cité médiévale absolument magique.

Nice town. It makes you wonder what life was like here through the ages…read more Seems like an impossibly large high bridge to enter the town. And a very difficult site to build on. But also to attack. So there you go. Lots of places to eat even in off season of late September. Very interesting stop but be warned it can be a long walk from the parking lot to the town and very hilly in the town. Be ready and buy or have water.
