If you want to fight the crowds for the oldest pub in Ireland picture, it may be worth it, but the Guinness record plastered everywhere, and the busloads of folks stopping in for the same beer you did, may not be worth it. I went, I can say I had a beer there, no reason to go back. Athlone on the other hand, such a fun city if you can find a place to park and experience all the shops and things to do.

They greeted us with a great space outside that fit us all so well. The woman who set us up and took our orders was so wonderful. So full of life and had this great laugh. All of us were so happy with our meals and drinks and couldn't have asked for a better first night for our whole group. This is a place that more people need to try out. I had a tortellini dish and it was so well flavored - I tend to like a little more sauce but didn't ask for it - have a strong feeling that if I had asked, it would have been provided.

I was with an American friend accompanying me on a visit back to my family in Ireland. She said her…read morefamily came from Birr Offaly and that she knew they still lived there somewhere. We went to Birr to see if we could possibly track them down. The first place we stopped at was Kelly's pub. We had the best service and ate the best food. The soup was served with fresh homemade brown bread & Irish butter and the cottage pie was served piping hot with a rich flavour that felt not only delicious but nutritious too, The vegetables we were served tasted like they had just been picked. We asked the waitress if she could direct my American friend regarding sources of possible information on her long lost Irish relatives. Before I knew what was happening the owner John drove us to meet her family. He made phone calls, got their address and brought us there himself. I was so proud that my friend got to see the magic of Irish hospitality and selfless acts of kindness towards a stranger. Yes…read moreI am an American I will gush that they had AC in the hotel room because it was warm for Ireland and people were melting. They have complimentary breakfast in the mornings so huge bonus! There is a large bar which hosts the breakfast but is also good for a pint in the evening. The staff was super friendly and brought up additional chairs when we hosted some of our fellow wedding guests on our balcony.

It's a nice location with lots of parking, there is a restaurant inside and within walking distance of restaurants and bars. There is also a spa, but it's limited and not a lot available. The hotel is clean and nice inside, and the staff is very helpful with suggestions of what is nearby. They also provide a map; the elevators are very slow, and the room is good and clean, but the hallway had a weird smell the entire time. The bed was okay, but the pillows were thin, and we didn't spend much time in the room so that didn't bother us. We had the window open during our stay, and it was nice outside the entire time. The bathroom was small, and the towels were very small and thin. But for the location, it's worth it.

As far as his pub goes, it's a great comfy place in the middle of town. Lots of places to chill inside and a great atmosphere, as well. There's a good sized outside area for the smokers or any day when it's not pouring rain. Sunday night is BBQ night and the burgers were great. All in all, highly recommended!
