We rented a cabin on Upper Saranac Lake recently and the owner suggested we hike the long 4.5-mile road in to see the Great Camp Santanoni. My husband suggested we rent mountain bikes and bike-in, instead, and Yelp led him to Cloudsplitter Outfitters. Though the biking was a bit arduous ... it's a slightly sloping-up, gravel road ... and by the time you bike from Cloudsplitter Outfitters, you've added another 1.3 miles ... I'm glad we went this route versus walking in. You get there sooner, it's easier to carry-in a lunch/water, it's cooler because you're moving faster, and harder for the flies/mosquitos to get you when you're biking. More on the camp-experience in that review. This is for Cloudsplitter Outfitters, which we recommend. The owner outfitted us and sized us up with a careful eye for which bike would work best for each of us. $25 for the bike & helmet for as long as we wants to ride, including if we returned the bikes after hours, seems very fair pricing to us. He made sure we were comfortable, gave us quick tutorials on the bikes and courtesy rules of the road while at the camp. Overall a great experience - wouldn't change a thing, and applaud him for offering this option for experiencing the camp. P.S. the ride back out is far easier, since it slopes downhill almost the entire way - you're back at the gatehouse before you know it! And back at the Cloudsplitter Outfitters facility to return the equipment in a jiffy. read more
