Kevin McBrides gallery called The Osprey's Nest spans two store fronts on Chincoteague's Main…read moreStreet. Inside (and out) you 'll find piles and stacks and shelves of prints, T-shirts, mugs, posters and paintings of McBride's rather fanciful interpretations of the ubiquitous Chincoteague pony (now, registered as an official breed). Fanciful? Maybe a better word is inventive interpretations? Or maybe sentimental interpretations? Or dare I say, in my oath to be honest- amazingly poor, souless, anatomically incorrect, sad and just plain awful interpretations of these somewhat stunted animals. Every year, for decades, McBrides creates an original painting of these animals, prancing on the beach, or in the woods, or rounded up by the saltwater cowboys, whose renderings are equally awful. I don't really mind that McBride uses the same figure of cowboy or pony in various paintings, but attention to scale is lacking. The animals are stiff, with odd muscle structure, and even odder bone structure. Yet McBride, a master and taking an image and printing it on thousands of products, does show initiative in marketing. McBride has probably the best location and space for art on the island. It would be nasty to say, maybe he should get some art in there, but that would be nasty of me, right? At the very least, I wonder if McBride might consider taking some time off to REALLY study the animals and their environment, and maybe take some time to look at historical (and contemporary) paintings of horses or other animals, including people. McBride has the will to survive in this withering economic climate, but why not lose the shlock and really, really make some art?
