There's an onsite bakery, plenty of fresh fruit and vege and all the usual fresh, tinned and frozen produce - plus there's a full counter service selling cigarettes, lottery and medicines (although pretty low in terms of range - there is a Boots pharmacy next door so I'd say check this out instead) The range of booze is pretty limited, beer choice is lacking in inspiration and the wine is your standard selection. The Co-op just coasts really, it serves a purpose but nothing particularly special about this operation.

Oh, you can't get it to stop. Only two stops on the Terravision. It gets worse too, the driver seemed content with blasting some kind of compilation of Rock FM's happy hardcore Saturday playlist so loudly that I couldn't even hear my own iPod despite my silencing earphones. So. I was stuck at Shudehill, when I discovered they charge for the loo at that bus station. I needed the loo. It was not pleasant. And my money-saving budget-happy gene kicks in when I see loos you have to pay for. However when on my way to the Arndale to find somewhere to spend a penny, I went past the lovely shiny Co-op food supermarket where I could literally spend pennies. I couldn't resist going in, it looked so nice. This is due to a mixture of enthralling offers and the fact that they're so ethically sound. They do like to tell us about it on the adverts. A LOT. I really needed to get to the Arndale, emergencies and all that, but the fact that I spent a fair bit of time browsing in there proves how good it is. Locally sourced fresh stuff, delicious looking flavoured houmous and kettle chips and specials instructing you how to create a home meal for a pittance. I know a lot of supermarkets are doing this right now but there's just something about the Co-op's hippy demeanour that makes it all the nicer. I'm a Co-op fan, and so should you be. Quit lining the evil Tesco pockets and do your shopping here. Oh and a PS - recently I went to the Piccadilly branch and grabbed a couple of reduced items. My card had expired and I only had loose change, but I was around 18p short. The checkout lady let me off. So not only are they ethical, they're sympathetic too! Now if we could just get rid of those slightly smug adverts they keep bombarding us with, they'd be incapable of doing wrong...

Originally, this site was rumoured to become yet another soul-sucking, money crunching, Tesco Express. Luckily, the local community intervened with residents and MPs actively complaining to the landlord and local council. They obviously listened and decided to rent the space to the more ethical Co-op Group who promote fairtrade and organic farming. Open early til late, it's a great addition to the Northern Quarter and a wonderful reminder that sometimes the good guys get to kick the bad guys where it hurts!

M&S Foodhall at Walkden Retail Park is a rather nice location for a "Food Hall", while it might not…read morebe as large as other Marks and Spencer locations, such as Bolton or Manchester Market Street, which are both not too far away, for a Food Hall only Marks and Spencer store, the selection is pretty good and the store feels good too: clean, modern. The selection of most items was good for a store of its' size, I would have liked to see a larger "Made Without Wheat" section, however, but I could get most of what I needed. The location is good, it is close to many other food stores nearby, including the Tesco Extra store, which is the largest Tesco in England. Other retailers such as Iceland and Aldi are nearby, you might want to get some items from these retailers as they are a little cheaper. The staff seemed friendly, I began chatting regarding the new mobile payment app, where you can scan items and pay on your phone, I was told she has never seen a customer use it before, I think it's such a cool feature which makes the shopping experience easier, so the store should try and promote it, unlike other stores you wouldn't know this one offered it unless you've used it before at another branch. 4*

A nice enough M&S Simply Food location located on Wilmslow Rd, serving Didsbury Village in…read moreManchester. It is a fairly small store, as common with "Simply Food" branches, but they still had a fine selection of most items you would expect to find from a Marks and Spencer, although it is still minimal compared to their other stores, so if you're looking for something in particular, you might wish to head to nearby branches in either Stretford or Manchester city centre. The staff seemed friendly enough, although they did leave a warehouse cage, blocking part of the aisle, which was difficult to move to due to a lack of space, so it ended up blocking certain items that I wanted to buy. The Marks and Spencer app is available here, so you can scan and pay for items using your mobile device, which is handy, especially if you're looking to get in and out of the store quickly. There didn't appear to be any manned checkouts here - self-service only. This could be difficult for the elderly, so I was surprised that Marks and Spencer which is common with older shoppers did not have a manned checkout. 4* - A fairly good store apart from a couple of major flaws which hopefully will be reviewed.

This is a nice Marks and Spencer location, which sells a reduced food range compared to the huge…read morebranch on Market Street, but it has the convenience of being located within Manchester Spinningfields, next to the old Carluccio's unit, being on one level it also means you don't have to rely on escalators/lifts, which always seem to be breaking down at their Market Street store. The staff seem friendly, there are a good amount of checkouts and this store also supports the Mobile Pay and Go app. The to-go food and drink range is hit or miss, it can be the best in the area sometimes, but sometimes it can be pretty depleted, supported by a fresh orange machine (Currently out of use due to COVID). There is generally an OK level of stock, especially for a store of its' size, but this is again reduced compared to the Market Street store, and they often do run out of items which is a little annoying, but on the other hand there have been times they've stocked items here which they don't have in the larger stores. 4* - Probably my favourite Marks and Spencer Food only location in Manchester, not without its flaws, but certainly pretty good and well worth a look in, if passing through Spinningfields.

While I wasn't able to get the item I came in for, I was pleased with the selection overall, I found them to be one of the better supermarkets in the area for overall choice/selection in both grocery and home, the store had a nice, modern feel to it too which I liked. There is also an upstairs area with a Cafe and Clothing Section, so the store is HUGE. I do think the staff could have had better knowledge of where to find items, after asking someone where to find something, I later found out we were in the wrong area of the store and they didn't stock it anyway, he did seem super friendly though. The worst part about this store for me was they seemed to have blockages down every aisle from warehouse cages to even a warehouse truck, it seemed to be in the worst possible positions, luckily the store was large so this didn't have a huge effect, but it felt like I was in the middle of a construction site in parts of the store. My checkout experience was quick and easy using Sainsbury's Smartshop, it would have been good to see them have more bags at the front of the store in order to support this. 4* - Very good supermarket in Leigh, it is spacious and modern with a fairly good selection of most items.

This is one of the largest Booths stores I have visited, located on Stanley Road in Knutsford Town…read moreCentre, Booths is a premium northern supermarket chain, it reminds me a lot of a Northern Waitrose, this store is visually pleasing and has some good and high-quality products, especially from their Booths own brand. Prices are a little bit more expensive here, which is typical of the Booths brand. The store did have a good selection of products, but it still felt short compared to the size of the store, with many shelves and food counters left half-empty and poorly stocked, and they just looked like they had not been full for a while, which makes me wonder if the store is maybe too big for its own boots. There is a Cafe in the store, but it appears to be closed up and packed away in the early afternoon, which is a shame. I did find the store layout to be a little confusing, making it harder to find what I was looking for than it should be, with key grocery items including dairy (milk and cheese) tucked into the back corner of the store, I found items such as the cheese poorly packed onto the shelves, for some reason they put most of the cheese on a deep shelf right at the top, which would make it difficult for anyone who wasn't significantly tall to reach. The checkout service remained slow, down to not having a self-service option and the outdated system at the tills, compared to other major supermarkets, that being said the staff members at the checkout and on the food counters, were friendly. The car park was large, but again a strange one, the private parking company has a sign which states you can park for two hours up until 8 pm... but the store closes at 10 pm. This leaves room for misinterpretation and confusion on the car parking regulations during the final two hours of the day and needs to be rectified. 3* - Friendly staff and some nice products, but the store just seems too large for what they have, with the shelves and fresh-food counters seeming depleted, other issues such as the shelf placement and setup as well as the car parking means there are many areas for improvement.
