The car park entrance is around the corner in Moat Croft Road, and there's a bus stop right outside, so access is good for an urban location. It has everything you'd need for your weekly shop - whether it's for you or not depends on whether you're prepared to pay more for your shop compared with some other supermarkets, although they do have offers and have just introduced a cheaper essentials range. On the other hand, I generally find the quality good (especially for fruit and veg) and the staff here were very helpful on my visit. Pay your money and take your choice, I guess. My one real downer on this location is that they could have made the building a bit nicer - it's a posh version of a brick-encased shed, and it rather detracts from the architecture of the Old Town, including the 12th century church and pub nearby

The array of exotic fresh herbs and spices is impressive, but they also do a wide range of fresh fruit and vegetables and dairy products, which are as locally sourced as possible. They also have an extensive range of special diet products - for example, gluten free, vegan and vegetarian products, and organic baby food. Prices vary hugely, though: pittas are very good value, for example, but some other items are more expensive. But with such a wide range it is unlikely you won't be able to find what you want. The main downer - as others have said - is the staff, who vary from friendly to downright dismissive. The other particular gripe is the awkward queuing system, that means that on every visit, someone who has arrived later has ended up getting served before me.

Last summer I probably went in every other day for a bunch of vine tomatoes or a box of their amazing alfonso mangoes. These days however, I find myself going out of my way to buy my fresh fruit, vegetables and store cupboard favourites from other neighbourhood eastern and international stores. Their produce is still great but their current customer service gets a definite thumbs down from me. The staff on the shop floor are friendly enough but the women behind the till are either cold and unhelpful or plain rude. I've had my groceries thrown and dropped into my bag so many times, I've lost count. I've talked to other female friends who have recieved the same thousand yard stare too and decided to stop shopping there altogether. Ladies - how about showing some love instead of all that A.T.T.I.T.U.D.E?

Unlike other nearby cooperatives and health food stores, I feel hiSbe's ethical mission is different -- not just to offer foods that are good for people and produced ethically and sustainably, but also to offer them at a fair price! Their atmosphere is also totally different, like the board on which you can write product suggestions that you hope they'd consider carrying, or just little comments about what you loved in the store that day. I especially like how much they emphasize local produce -- I go there first before checking any other supermarkets to see if any of the ingredients I need for the day can be sourced locally. This also means they carry a lot of local brands of packaged goods (Sussex Gold for example) that can't be found in supermarkets. They also have fair trade bananas, and a sign explaining their choice which I found very informative. If you love buying bulk goods like I do, but don't want to support certain other stores in Brighton that have them but are politically contentious, hiSbe should be your go-to! They have bulk pastas and grains (including short grain brown rice), bulk oatmeal and museli base, bulk chocolate buttons, and bulk nuts available. Unfortunately no bulk seasonings and very few bulk legumes. They also have a coffee shop inside which has ethical coffee options and also a vegan chocolate beet cake that calls my name every day but I've managed to resist so far. Anyway, it's easily my favourite supermarket in Brighton and I want them to stick around for a long time, so I hope you'll give them a try!

Stock is always properly up to date and you can grab what you need. Even the security guy in there makes an effort to nod or smile or and it does make a difference. Iceland food isn't out of this world but it's cheap, quick and easy to shop in there when you need to stock up on meat or grab a ready meal some nights.

The majority of it looks lip-smackingly good and is priced reasonably with coffee, pastries and salads to take away for commuters. Handily, they also sell big bags of rice, pasta, pulses and herbs and lots of Ecover household and cleaning products. In a strange twist, they also stock a small variety of rental DVDs from the owner's previous business - so you can pick up a blockbuster or rom-com with your grains and groceries!

At 60p for a big batch of cinnamon sticks, I would say that Grocer & grain is the right value for right amount. It did seem a little bit cheaper than other markets in the area, which is great if you just spent £24 on a ticket to London!

I finally realised how old and uncool I was when found out that a new Sainsbury's Local was being…read morebuilt at the end of my road, and the discovery was basically the highlight of my week. Admittedly the prospect of being delivered from the evils of the nearby Tesco Express would probably be enough to raise most people's spirits, but it was with a rather unhealthy level of longing that I gazed upon the wooden facing that for a few weeks shielded the work going on inside. The Sainsbury's is now open, and, unsurprisingly, it's OK. Nothing amazing, but it's definitely an improvement. For one thing they sell coffee filter papers, but their stock in general is more wide ranging. I even managed to buy hollandaise sauce in there, although I wouldn't recommend hollandaise out of a jar, it turned out to taste of jellied vinegar. They have more service points than the Tesco too, and the cherry on the cake is the free cashpoint. Until that one arrived it was a good 10 minute walk in either direction to get to a free cashpoint, which meant a lot of money was wasted on buying small items in the Tesco in order to get cash back.
