I stopped by Coalition for a drink and small bite, and while the food was good and the ambiance was nice, the drinks were a little under par. My friends and I bellied up got the bar for a quick fix of some booze and a bite but had to wait a while as we tried to flag down the bartender. My friend ordered a Manhattan that she sent back and exchanged for wine. Rightfully so as it strongly resembled Robitussin. The Old Fashioned was OK. Both drinks were pre-made, so maybe that what made them less than great?? Either way, the quality didn't match the $15 price point. The Brussel sprouts were quite delicious and fries were good. Finally got to Coalition with high expectations of an excellent meal. On a Saturday night it was packed, the music loud and more appropriate for a pub. Overall, the noise level was deafening and not what I would associate with a high-end dinner out. The service, however, was gracious and attentive. Unfortunately, the food was largely disappointing. The tuna tartare appetizer was nicely presented but the tuna was diced so small and overwhelmed by avocado, tomatoes, and other ingredients it detracted from just enjoying the tuna. The fried wontons, while good, were not flat enough to put the tuna and everything else on. You can fare far better getting excellent Tuna around the corner at AMA for far less. Our second app was the Brussel Sprouts which were so buried in everything but the kitchen sink you can hardly taste the sprouts. An emerging theme with these two dishes was a lack of knowing how to complement the main ingredient without burying it to the point of losing it. For an entree I had the Parmesan Encrusted Walleye. The piece was enormous and far too thick for a breaded filet. The fish itself and the coating was bland and uninspired, as was the accompanying mushy potato wedges. I left the plate mostly uneaten and didn't ask for a container. My wife's squash ravioli had a tasteless brown filling that was very disappointing after having terrific squash ravioli at Broders a couple of weeks earlier. Great spot for a socially distanced Saturday night date! Every precaution is taken and the plexiglass at each booth/table makes it feel so much more intimate. We could hear each other! The food is really generously portioned. I had the farro salad and the hubs had the ribeye. So good! We started with the fried cauliflower and it's delicious. Ask a big portion so, the leftovers are tonight's light dinner for me. Three plates coming out of the kitchen were beautiful. We need to come back for sure. What a cute little place to meet for brunch on a Sunday afternoon in the rain! I had never been here before my SIL suggested it several weeks back (sorry I'm a little behind with my reviews). We generally have a standing brunch appointment on Sundays, and like to try different places. It was close to home, so I said sure, why not? It's a small place just east of 50th and France, and they somehow scored a decent parking lot! When you walk in the front door, goes straight into a lovely, bright bar atmosphere. The aesthetics are very inviting and positive Our server was Micki and she was equally as positive! She helped us pick out drinks and was great about explaining the entrees so we could make our selections. We decided to split a couple of pork dishes; the enchilada and eggs as well as another pork dish they had on special which I cannot remember. The reason, however, why I can't remember the other dish is because the former knocked my socks off! Seriously, the enchilada sauce is so good, a little spicy but as this kind of food tends to upset my stomachs, we ate all of it and I felt great afterwards. I'd return again and again for that dish! The pork was braised and very tender. The eggs were poached and cooked perfectly. Actually there was only one egg, so perhaps he portions were a little smaller than usual. Coalition has everything you want for a great brunch spot. I seriously wanted everything on the menu! I went for brunch on a Saturday and didn't have to wait at all. Our server was attentive and service was fast. We had complimentary cardamom donuts to start that were absolutely delicious. I had the biscuit Benedict and my husband has the breakfast sandwich. The Benedict was perfect with the perfect amount of sauce. The biscuit itself was amazing and paired well with everything. The hash browns were crisp but just a little bland. My husband enjoyed the breakfast sandwich and I could see it had a huge crispy piece of bacon and looked delicious. It's a bit more expensive than your average brunch, but the serving size is big and I had enough for two meals. The space is beautiful and they even have a parking lot. I will definitely be back again and again. I can't wait to try their other menu items and I've been recommending them to every for a great brunch. It's worth the drive. read more

We had a somewhat big group 10 ppl. So probably our table was unusual. Somehow we all felt from the get go it wasn't Minnesota nice. IMO it wasn't bad just not as friendly as other places. We had an international group and they commented that something was off with the service. Our server forgot a couple drinks and somehow was rushing the service. But not bad service just not very inviting or friendly. Busboys apparently were not even allowed to take a "one more drink" order since we got a "you have to tell your server". The food was nothing to write home about. Even the one person who had a burger said it was very average. I had lamb chops and best thing on the plate was risotto and it was just OK. Place has nice decor and easy off street parking. Clean restrooms. Apparently a fun bar for a quick drink and bite and that's it. Prices are high based on plate amount. People who had the walleye were left hungry. Note group was of mostly men. Maybe portions are ok for a slim woman. We also had korean tacos and for our table it came with 3 tacos and table next to us had 4. Not sure if they paid/asked for an extra taco. We were not told about rhe choice and didn't ask but hoped our server would realize 10 ppl would have liked to taste as many different appetizers. The concept is good, so I hope they keep improving. Very nice expierence for a late breakfast visit today. Not suprised that this place was a pretty quiet on this slighty snowy and cold day. Nice warm reception from a server behind the bar that welcomed us and said we could sit whereever we wanted-this is always an A+++ in my dining book for me. We chose a high table by the window on West 50th so we could see the traffic go by. Shawna our server was very professional and warm. She brought 2 warm donuts that we quickly inhaled. I always love eggs benedict and enjoy comparing homemade hollindase sauce at differnet etablishments ..this one ranks high on my list especially on the chedder biscuit that absorbed the sause instead of an english muffin that usual repels it. Another in the ever more prevalent Farm to Table restaurants in the twin cities-this one located near 50th and France on the edge of Edina. Like other F2T spots, a quarter of the menu is the list of local partners that are providing meats, cheese etc. They've got a pretty large menu and there were lots of tempting choices when I stopped in for lunch on a Monday. The lunch crowd was heavy on seniors and lady's lunching at first but filled up with business people by 12:15. Tempting items on the menu included the coalition burger, fried chicken & biscuit, chicken focaccia, walleye sandwich and more. Servers were friendly an seated people quickly. It was a bit of a wait for our food but the burger and perfectly cooked crispy fries were worth it. Huge drop in quality from visiting when they first opened 10 years ago? to today. Overpriced for the food quality. Mixed up the order between two of our friends' order, chicken sandwich wasn't special, and chicken was dry with no seasoning but overly charred. I was excited to share Coalition with our group of friends who have never been and one friend who is a local chef at some very successful restaurants in area, but honestly was embarrassed of the mediocre food for price. Finally a spot that serves a Manhattan with the correct mix! I paid 13$ for six chicken wings that looked like they ordered them from bdubs . The burger was ok but the fries were off the chain! They were shoestring version of state fair fries and done well. I really kept it basic because I got the vibe this spot was trying too hard to be upscale not upscale. YUM YUM YUM! Why did it take me so long to get here? I recently stopped in for Sunday lunch and my husband made me promise that we will come back. We loved the food, atmosphere and service. They have soo many delicious options on the menu but we were both in the mood for biscuits so we went with the biscuit sandwich and biscuit benedict. Carb overload but totally worth it. I chose to have the turkey sausage on my sandwich and it had a ton of spices and strong flavors that complimented the buttery flakey biscuit. I was so please with my experience at Coalition. A dear friend and I were trying to go out to eat and we're not prepared with a reservation. We walked in and they were able to seat us at the bar. Having seen it many times when we've driven by we stopped in around 7:00 pm on a Friday night and were able to be seated without a reservation. The inside is decorated with farmhouse chic meets Malibu casual. It's beautiful inside. We started with the cheese and sausage plate which was accompanied by fig jam, Dijon mustard, and a sweet red pepper jelly. The sausage was served hot and was the right amount of spicy. The house salad was a little bland and I'd probably skip it next time. My Coalition burger was delicious and the fries that were served on the side were thin and crispy. My husband opted for the Walleye, which had a crispy breading on the outside and the fish itself was tender without being overdone. It was served with broccolini that was steamed to perfection. Service was great, our meal was brought out at a good pace. While it was a little loud at the peak of the evening, it quieted down by the time we left and would make for a nice place to go for date night. There is also ample parking in the park which can be a rare find in the area. I'd recommend you give Coalition a try if you're in the area. read more

I've been to Coalition a couple times for lunch now, and while I've enjoyed the food, my experiences have still left something to be desired. During all my visits I've ordered salads with an added protein. They have been delicious - the protein has been cooked perfectly each time - but they are also quite expensive (around $22). My favorite is the farro and arugula with salmon. Service is a little pretentious and aloof. I really truly wanted to love Coalition, but the more time I spend thinking about my recent visit for lunch the unhappier I am with my experience. Let's start with the positives. The parking lot is nice and roomy, which I'm grateful for. Parking around 50th and France can be frustrating, so this was a relief. The interior is really beautiful. It's absolutely a breath of fresh air over the previous restaurant. Now the middle ground - the food. We started with blood orange mimosas and the apple brie salad, all of which was light and bright and flavorful. My friend had the enchilada and eggs, which she devoured completely. I ordered the griddled cheese with fries. I had been deciding between that and the biscuits and gravy, but saw some fries come to a nearby table that looked so tasty it tipped the scales. The sandwich was great. Definitely less cheesy than what I expect when I order a grilled cheese, but the avocado was plentiful and the flavors on point. Unfortunately, the french fries were wildly disappointing. They were limp and tepid, not perfectly crisp and piping hot as they appeared from afar. Based on the food, which was mostly delicious, I would definitely return. I just wouldn't order the fries again. And the disappointment. The entire time I was at Coalition, I felt remarkably unwelcome. When we arrived, the hostess seemed annoyed that she had to seat us. Our server hit an uncomfortable balance of disinterest and self-deprecation, practically recoiled when we ordered mimosas (not included on the cocktail menu), and got really weird when we said we were celebrating a birthday (it's fine for a restaurant to not do a special birthday thing - doesn't need to be an awkward moment). I don't need to be schmoozed or fawned over in a restaurant, but I do expect a little bit of effort. Especially with a newer restaurant, I would hope that the staff have a more passion or excitement. Or at least make some effort to connect with their diners. Finally, on absolutely the most petty of notes, I didn't realize the interior was so dark. Coalition's IG account touts big windows and copious amounts of natural light. It's something that drew me in and encouraged my decision to dine there. But when we were seated, it felt like a bait-and-switch. While the main dining room is gorgeous, it's not what I felt had been advertised. We were able to get a last minute reservation for 6 pm on a week night. The parking lot was full, but we found street parking less than 1 block away. The restaurant was full by the time we left. It was a little loud but that added to an energetic vibe. The staff was very nice and the service was efficient. We had a salad, a pasta dish and a chicken dish. However, we were able to find many other tempting dishes to order. We started out with the Korean tacos. 3 small tacos filled with Korean spiced short ribs. Yum. Very nice. Not spicy. Then moved on to the grilled cheese sandwich. Oh my, this is a beauty. Filled with cheese, bacon, avocado, lettuce and tomato with a very good hearty bread. Fantastic. I visited Coalition for the first time tonight, and it will not be my last! The decor was beautiful, our waitress was knowledgeable and kind, and everything was delicious. We started with the Korean BBQ tacos for an appetizer. Oh. My. God. You need to try these. I visited with my dad, who I try new restaurants with every week, and we agreed this was one of the tastiest things we've eaten in months. The beef was so tender and perfectly seasoned, and the kimchi complemented the beef so well. We could have eaten about 10 of these tacos each. I ordered the butter crusted walleye for my entree with a lemon aioli. The walleye was excellent, and the aioli was the perfect sauce pairing. The crispy potato side was lacking crispiness, but that is my only critique of this dish. My dad ordered the lamb with risotto. He loved the dish, especially the risotto. We split a slice of key lime pie for dessert. The filling was light and delicious, and the graham cracker crust had a tasty hint of cinnamon. This is a good place for a special date, a nice dinner out or as a way to impress someone. The location in Excelsior is beautifully decorated with some outdoor seating and plenty of bar, table and booth seating. We both had a cocktail (Ginger Collins for me, Old Fashioned for him) which were great. We started with the bao buns which we called a "religious experience". Incredibly well seasoned, soft spongy buns but never enough! As for our actual meal, I had the salmon sandwich which was a LOT of focaccia and a long, thin chunk of salmon which didn't really work as a sandwich. It was very tasty though. My boyfriend had the roasted chicken tostada which came with queso fresco, chicken and a crispy tostada but felt like a very small option. Pros: "social Hour" from 2-5.
