Its all under cover so the potential bad English weather won't be a factor. According to their web site, there are 135 stores inside. I went recently a few days before Christmas and it wasn't too busy - nothing like shopping centres like Arndale Centre or Trafford Centre (actually never normally go to Trafford Centre but especially near Christmas but I think I can safely say its crazy busy!) Didn't stay too long but went to Boots and also went to Debenhams for some food - which was actually pretty good. There is multi storey car parking but unfortunately it is not free. For under an hour, its £1. It goes up to £5.50 if you are more than 4 hours. Between 2-4 hours is £2.20 which is not too bad I guess.

It looks like it's already having a negative impact on the high street and independent retailers. I think there will be very little overspill to the town centre shops. I'm sure those who like shopping centres will like it and as shopping centres go it is very nice. But it's not for me. PS. It is ugly from the outside.

Great deals are to be found pretty much anywhere you go out here. I'm a sucker for deals, so I have to pace myself, lol. The people are nice and so are the employees in the stores. This shopping mall is HUGE and has many floors that are accessible via stairs or escalator. Seems like a great place to come for your every day needs and even for special occasion wants. They have luxury brand stores & more casual clothing stores. Lots of different coffee shops here, as well, lovely for a pick me up while doing some shopping! By the Starbucks, there are stairs with each step covered with turf that made for a pleasant area to sit and rest before getting up to shop again or just walk around.

I can never quite make my mind up about these shops, sometimes I enter to find them full of tat I would only expect to see on sale at a seaside resort, other times I find them full of unique statement pieces that are a bargain and would look great in my home. This variety and speedy turnover of stock makes for a great visit either way though as you just never know what you will find. In my opinion one of the best home shops in Warrington, especially when it comes to Christmas-they always pull out all the stops to stock up with inexpensive but beautiful Christmas ornaments-I know i'll be checking back regularily in the run up to Christmas day.

Walkden Town Centre (formerly known as The Ellesmere Centre, but many places still use the outdated…read morename, probably down to habits) is the main shopping centre serving Walkden town centre, while it isn't the largest of shopping centres, it does have the largest Tesco Extra store in the UK, this does take up the big bulk of the shopping centre, at least the indoor part anyway. I think the name change was to add the outdoor part of the shopping centre too. There is a lot of car parking, the indoor area is unusual in the sense that instead of escalators, they use travellators, I much prefer these as they are more accessible for all, and look better too. Public transport links to the centre are OK, I do find it annoying that the 36 and 37 buses which are both on the Manchester to Bolton route, which calls here, actually call at different stands at different ends of the shopping centre, I do think having a small bus station would be easier, as it means having to go to one specific bus stop, rather than being able to wait at the same stop for multiple services. Stores located here include Marks and Spencer, Aldi, Poundland, Pets at Home and Boots, there is also a small number of banks and a Post Office. Food retailers located here include Subway, Nando's and Domino's. 3* - Not too bad, it is nice for a small town like Walkden, the lower floor on the inside part of the mall does seem to be pretty empty as many retailers have moved to the outside retail park area or the main road.

Tesco was completely rebuilt and revamped - though it does feel very clinical and a bit like the Hive out of resident evil at night... It's already attracted new custom - Costa Coffee - which is great! They seem to be doing fairly well too. There are always people inside and hopefully this will inspire more custom from other businesses too. The banks have moved and now have very shiny new spaces; HSBC, Lloyds, Halifax, Santander. The market hall is also revamped with a bigger and better area. There's a good selection of stalls from handbags, to a card shop, to a clothes shop, to a fancy dress shop, to a Polish food stall, to a pet items stall AND best of all.... the old school sweet shop! However, it does cost 10p or 20p to go to the toilet but they are well looked after! This mall has a lot of the stores that I wanted to shop at and one store in particular that I have not found throughout my time in the UK they actually did have so that was great. It's also really beautiful as well. It has different areas in the mall that are themed based off different parts of the world and they did a really great job of creating that aesthetic throughout the mall. The staff we spoke to were also really nice and friendly. I overall had a good time and would recommend coming here for a shopping trip if you are near the area.

The staff are friendly and pleanty about who are willing to help. Loads of bargins to be had from everyday essentials, gents clothing, ladies fashion, nightwear and underwear. The kids section has some really lovely stuff on sale, check out the reduced items as you can pick up some great bargins, last time I was in managed to pick up some fleecy kids bedtime robe for £1, which I have put away as christmas Presents. I love the household stuff on sale too and its really cheap.

However it is convenient for the local area, inside is an Asda and Iceland aswell as some chain stores such as New Look and Argos. Parking is free and there is plenty of it, making it easy to come here. The shops tend to be the cheaper end of the high street stores, newsagents, charity and sports shops. At Christmas they often have a small grotto and a Santa which is nice for the children. Birchwood shopping centre is probably not somewhere you would go Saturday shopping, the range of shops is just too small but it is nice to have a quick look around the shops if you are going to one of the supermarkets anyway.

Much better instead to drive to Birchwood Station, fairly close to the M62, park there (the car park always seems to have spaces to spare), and then catch one of the frequent trains to Liverpool: problem solved. Birchwood station itself is small but clean and tidy, with good signage and information about departures. The ticket office doesn't seem to be manned very often but the ticket machines (once you've mastered them) do the job. All in all: a good place.

I tend to confine my spending to the fresh produce stalls which I find to be as good as it gets, although they were out of okra on my last visit and the range is not as extensive as the adjacent Appna if you are on the hunt for something really niche. However, it is nice to be out in the fresh air, and the checkout here is very brisk which could be a deciding factor if you shop for fruit and veg more than once a week. See Angela B's review for a good overview of what is on the other stalls. For me, I would agree with her advice of combining your shopping trip with eating at one of the surrounding establishments, although I still have some detective work to find out good vegetarian options which I will add to my Longsight list once I have reviewed them.

You'll be able to find anything from bric-a-brac, fruit and veg, clothes and much more in these stalls covered by multi-coloured corrugated iron roofs. You'll also be supporting great, independent and local businesses, which is always worthwhile. The market is open most days save Sunday and Monday, but if second hand things are your calling then get down on a Tuesday where other people's cast offs can become your treasure.
