Coco's Variety is the BEST neighborhood bike shop. I've been following them on Instagram for a while and finally made it in with a trade-in towards a new bike that I could ride with my kids. Peter and Angel were both a wealth of knowledge. Peter was my sherpa, helping me discover what bike and child bike seats would best suit our family's needs. Angel then expertly installed a rear frame-mounted child seat for us on the new bike. Coco's Variety was like hitting the easy button... they had an extensive collection of used and new bike options and accessories, the bike prices were reasonable, it was great to be able to trade-in an old bike for a little discount, and Peter and Angel were professional and helpful in getting us set up to ride right away. I needed a fix on both of my tires. They totally helped me out with that! I dropped off my bike and they called when they knew what they could do for my tires. They called and told me what I needed to get done as well as pricing. I gave them the OK to get to work on my bike and when it was finished, they called to let me know it was ready for pick up. I wasn't able to pick it up that day so they allowed me to pick it up the following day (which I thought was nice since they were incredibly busy) So the day I was supposed to pick up, I realized I wanted a basket lol. I called them and they were able to get the job done! Totally happy with the work they did and had great service. Only thing is that it is quite pricey! read more

I have not written a bad review about a business in a while because I have been more mindful about the impact of my reviews on the business. I was even debating on whether I should write this one but I have not been disrespected from a business also in a long time. Let me continue with what happened below: I called this shop to consult them about bike racks for my vehicle. I had no problems with my initial call. The individual that helped me over the phone was indeed helpful. He asked me additional details about my car, where I was planning to install my rack, recommended brands and even told me that they were honestly sold out at the moment. In fact, many establishments were sold out of bike racks at the moment. However, he also encouraged that I continue to look for the bike racks and if I found bike racks to call their store back. He told me that they would try to see if they could offer a better deal which I thought was a great thing to offer. After I got off the phone with him, I found the Yakima bike racks that he recommended and even found a good deal on Amazon for purchase. With what he said in mind, I decided to call a few days later to see if they could help us install the bike racks since they are also listed as a "bike repair/maintenance" shop. I ended up speaking to the same sales representative that I spoke to initially but this time his tone was different. I told him that I found the bike racks on Amazon and as he directed in my previous phone call, I asked if their store could provide a better deal. He recommended that I purchase the racks on Amazon as they were still sold out. I then followed up to see if they could at least help me install the racks after I purchase them and was shocked by the response that I received. He was appalled that I asked if they could help us install the racks saying "first, you ask me if you could get a better deal on the racks that you found on Amazon and now you're asking for us to install the racks for you! Look, we're a small business! If you want us to install racks for you then you need to purchase them from our shop!" I couldn't believe that this was the same gentleman that helped me out a few days ago as his tone and approach was completely different. I apologized as I told him that there must be some sort of misunderstanding as I thought that I could at least pay them for installation and support their business even though I was not purchasing racks from them since they were sold out but he emphasized that if I was not buying our bike racks from them then they could not help us install them. I called a couple of stores after this call and was able to actually find a bike store in DTLA that offered to help us install our bike racks for $25 even though we were not buying bike racks from their store. The worker was nicer and I appreciated that we did not need to purchase racks from their store and just pay for the service we were looking for since indeed, they were also a "bike repair/maintenance" shop. Isn't that what you're supposed to do if you label your store, as such? Mind you, they were also a "small business" and not a chain one. Sorry Coco's Variety, I usually like to support local businesses in my neighborhood but after you addressed me in that matter and had to emphasize that you are a "small business" which I already was aware of, even offering me to call you back after finding racks elsewhere as you had initially directed me to do, I cannot support your store due to your customer service. I am actually FOR supporting "small businesses" but will not tolerate disrespect whether you are brave enough to disrespect me in person or over the phone. I called & visited over a dozen bike shops and Coco's Variety was by far, the most pleasant experience. I never knew bike shops had their version of record-shop-guy & comic-book-guy, but yes, they exist. I haven't ridden a bike since I was in elementary school & know nothing about adult bikes, but over-the-phone and in-person, Peter & the entire staff was warm, welcoming, & had zero judgements. They are covid-safe, take distancing precautions, and everyone always wears masks. I went here looking to rent a couple of bikes, their yelp says bike rentals but they do not rent bikes. Although I was disappointed about their yelp account saying they did rent bikes I still wanted to write a review because the gentleman that helped me was Cordial and had a great attitude. He directed me to Spoke Cafe about a mile away to rent bikes and that was very helpful, that right there deserved a rating. My father cycled to this bike shop this afternoon and asked the representative if he can have his pedals changed with the pedals he brought himself. They told him they can change it for him and that he would have to wait outside due to Covid-19. Twenty minutes have passed and my dad goes inside to inquire the status of the bicycle. The representative plainly tells my dad they cannot change it since he did not purchase the pedal from that store. My father was really upset because they made him wait outside for twenty minutes just to tell him they cannot change it since it wasn't an item of theirs. After reading Covid-19 updates stated on their website regarding "No on the spot repairs" It is still unreasonable and inconsiderate of them to have my father wait outside for twenty minutes when they simply could of stated their current policy right then and there. read more

They stock many new parts, and the shop back stocks used parts in drawers directly accessible to the customers. Five Stars Customer Service. The staff here is very helpful. Five Stars Product Knowledge and Skill. They seem to know almost anything. Location: Coco's is located near freeways and bike paths. Was looking around for bikes and most places were sold out on almost everything I wanted in my area. Decided to check out Coco's because they popped onto my Instagram feed. I was able to DM them and got a response right away. Drove up to them from Long Beach and decided on a Salsa Journeyman after Peter helped me out, who by the way is very friendly. I was so excited to get a bike that I got one a size too big but did not really notice until after a weekend ride. I emailed them back wondering if I can exchange the bike and Peter wrote back that it would be no problem at all. I could have spent hours in this shop but I was in and out quickly. This shop is conveniently located near the LA river bike path. There is a small amount of parallel car parking. The building is easy to find since it's painted with a bold mural in a geometric design. Inside there were several mechanics inside, below and surrounded by an army of new and vintage refurbished bicycles. Read on for more, but if you're short on time and just want to know if Coco's is a super-legit, local, independent cyclery staffed by some of the most helpful people in the bike world - yes, it is. I first came here totally by chance. For the last few months, one of my friends and I have been taking advantage of Sunday afternoons to hit up local breweries for a pint and a bite from a food truck or a local restaurant. A couple weeks ago we found ourselves on our way to a brewery in Frogtown and as we got close my friend mentioned that there was a small local bike shop nearby that he wanted to hit up. His last bike got stolen a while ago and he was in the market for a new commuter. He told me that Coco's came highly recommended to him by the people at his climbing gym who said you could count on being treated honestly there. I'd been thinking about getting a bike for easily a year so instantly that sounded like a great idea. Over that year, I'd gone bike shopping numerous times but I'm new to biking and each time left more confused than when I walked in, either that or I felt like the staff at other stores didn't really listen to me and were more interested in what they wanted to sell me than what I wanted to buy. After our beer, my friend and I walked over to Coco's to see what it was about. Right away we were greated by Cecilio, one of the guys who works there and who, as it turns out, my friend knew from the climbing gym. We all chatted for a little bit, then got down to business of talking bikes. I told Cecilio what I was looking for and he recommended a couple nice bikes in a very reasonable price range. I took them both out for a test ride and felt kind of like I'd felt other times I'd test-ridden a bike, like "That was fine and I want a bike eventually, but I'm not sure if that's the one". There was this other bike there that caught my eye and I asked Cecilio what the deal was with it. He broke it down for me - super versatile, fun to ride, and also a good bit more expensive, still very reasonable as far as good bikes go. The kind of bike made to be ridden for years to come. I took it for a spin and instantly I was like "Oh my god this bike is the most awesome thing ever and I want it." So I bought it right then, right? Negative. I loved the bike but I wanted to make sure that I was sure. I came back two more times before I pulled the trigger, each time asking Cecilio a ton of questions and him giving me great and helpful answers. Never once did he try to upsell me or push me in a direction I wasn't into. All he cared about was me finding a bike I loved. Well guess what - that's exactly how it worked out. These guys have set up and adjusted a vintage road bike and now a vintage mountain bike of mine (bridgestones) and they are both incredible to ride. The work was done with integrity and attention to detail, not to mention great advice/ suggestions/ solutions. They did an impeccable job wrapping my handlebars and installing new cables etc. I get compliments on both bikes often and they ride like a charm. I was in today for about five minutes and they adjusted my headset and aired up my tires for free. I feel good about paying these guys because their work is solid. Took my dad's bicycle in to be repaired. It had been sitting out in the rain unused for close to 10 years (due to a lot of reasons). I took it to them and they brought it back to life. I took it for a spin right after I picked it up and it worked perfectly. They are the definition of underpromising and overdelivering because, they got everything done earlier than expected and for less than they quoted. Bought a USB light and they exchanged it after 3 months when the button didn't work. No receipt needed and questions asked. Most places would tell you to go through the manufacturer. Extremely helpful, beautiful store, gave me free products! The first time I went in, they gave me all kinds of first-time buyer advice, which, as I gained knowledge and experience, turned out to be excellent. The second time, my Kryptonite u-lock wasn't working. I bought it from Coco's five months ago, but didn't have a receipt. They said, "You bought it here, right?" I said yes and they replaced it for free, saying they were "pretty sure" Kryptonite locks have a lifetime warranty and I shouldn't have that problem. One of the guys said to his coworker, "I think there's a replacement form online," and that was that. I also went in with a vintage bike I only partially understood. Tyson advised me, never dissuading me from buying their parts to do repairs on my own. He and his coworkers were honest, straight-forward, and pleasant. Another shop was charging $20 more than Coco's for a tune-up, and told me to replace something I didn't need to replace at all. Tyson at Coco's straightened that out over the phone, and when I went in he helped me out either right before a ride or right after, because he came around the corner taking off a helmet and hadn't even changed out of his clip-in bike shoes - which are awkward to walk around in! These guys go above and beyond. My friend, highly experienced with shops and repairs, went with me and told me these guys are WAY nicer than any other bike shop he has been to. In fact, this whole store is ironic. It looks like your local mom and pop used furniture shop.. well, besides the massive amount of bikes that are up for sale here. And that in itself is an illusion considering what this shop really has. Let's say you are thinking of the most random things. I'm talking about random knick knacks that you wont even find at wackos. small cast iron skillets for eggs, random toys from Mexico, Japan and just about anywhere else you could think about. So they sure as hell aren't all about the bikes. But hey, if you need that fixie bike, you know where to come.. Why yes, it's in Silver lake and I'm sure you'll face an onslaught of "hipsters", but don't hate, it's just someone's way of life. Besides, if you have to be a hipster to find strange little things like vintage toolboxes cool, then sign me up. I went by Coco's last month before Burning Man to buy my fourth bike from them. I'm only giving them 2 stars bc the other experiences were decent: though I still got bike snobbed, they got the job done and I was satisfied with the price and product. I have to pipe up about my last visit. Over the past three years, I had purchased a cruiser, a triathlon bike, and a burner bike from Coco's. I was in the market to buy a second burner bike bc I thought the one from last year might have rusted in Reno storage and be useless when I went to pick it up. 'Twas a Sat afternoon, an adroit young man named Christopher (I think) attended me and I explained my situation, my burner bike was in storage in Reno and I had sprayed it w W40, but not given in a vinegar bath. Should I buy a new one? "It's rusted solid" he said confidently, "Forget about it." "Ok great, what do you have?" yada yada yada ..... In the end, the crapper I wanted for $125 was still being worked on. "When will it be ready?" I asked. "No way of knowing" he said. "Well...is there a way I can buy this bike now and you call me when it's ready?" "No" he said, proudly turning my money away, "We don't work like that." I confirmed " Sooooo you WON'T take my money?" I said in disbelief. After all, you're a BUSINESS!!!! As he's aware I'm sure, there's a big race to get burner bikes and I didn't want to have to drive by Coco's twice a day in hopes the bike was ready and I'd scoop it up before another burner did. I reiterated this. "Well is there ANYTHING you can do to facilitate this, maybe call me when it's ready....?" " Well, I'll take down your number, but it's not really a big ticket item so we don't usually do this" He affixed my number to the crapper that woudl take who knows how many days to assemble and I left. As I left I thought, hey......that was fucking rude! So what if it's a big ticket item or not? I'm in sales, and I never announce to the customer they're a small fish, especially not a repeat customer because news flash: IT MAKES THEM FEEL LIKE SHIT!! So I'm sorry if I'm a "small fish" but collectively at Coco's I've spent well past a grand, the least they could have done was be polite about it if he didn't want to take my money or even call me. Of course, no one ever called me from Coco's! The kicker is, when I got my bike out of Reno storage, there was no rust and it was fully functional. So, wrong again Mr High-ticket-horse! Coco's please give that bike snob thing a toning down, I realize it turns on the other bike snobs, but for the rest of us reglar ol bike riders, it's a big turn off. Burners beware!! And Coco's bad business! Burners may be buying rust buckets, but we're buying a LOT of them. When I do need my next bike, I won't be going back. read more

Overcharge on the services and bikes bases on what they feel like. Not cool! Prices are more solely base on business trend and practices on costumers on refurbished ones and they claim the old parts as new . The new parts installed is not actually the retail price. Tsk Tsk Tsk! So anywho... I know all of you yelpers are more concerned about prices ... Since, their website sucks. So anywho, here are some common prices that I notice on bike sales, which tend to change from time to time. Price Range: For some odd reason there is always this 1 bike in the store in the range $100 - $200. When somebody buys that cheap bike, the next following day another bike in its price range takes it place. "You know that one bike" There is about at least 2 or 3 bikes worth around the price $200 - $400 for all the newbies and casual riders out there. Then, there is the regular $500 - $700 about at least about 3 or 7 bikes. The rest of the bikes are about $700 - up. They also buy any bikes and they buy anything from new, old, and vintage. If any of you lost your bike or was stolen, your bike may end up here. You may want to check this place out. You never know, your stolen bike might be up for sale. Feel the wrath of my awesomeness!!
