We do not recommend John or Codex Contracting for any home projects. The below is a short summary of our project and why we came to this conclusion: Honesty/Integrity: At first, we trusted John to provide recommendations and advise on the proper procedures for permits, hot tub pad requirements, and electrical upgrades because he seemed knowledgeable. There were some delays form the permit office; however, John advised we finally received the approved permits and a pre-tour inspection was completed on multiple occasions so we could proceed. After he no showed on 9/2, we contacted our permit office on 9/4 to see what our options were to change to a different contractor and the representative advised the permits were sitting in their office unpaid. Also, a pre-pour inspection would not have happened because the permits were unpaid. Dependability: John lost our trust and we were unable to depend on him to be where he said he would be or do what he said he would do. There were a few occasions he was scheduled to do work and he either did not show up nor answer us when we asked if we were still scheduled for the day. He would show up promising he was going to get an item completed, but would do something minimal (like putting the frame together and then leaving). When it came to moving the hot tub, he kept pushing back the move date to the point we had to look into getting another company to move it. Professionalism: John is extremely abrupt in his text message and does it as a more one way communication - he also mentioned he prefers to text because he wants to document everything. He often spoke down to us when we asked follow up questions to his text messages. There was also a 15 to 20 minutes phone conversation where he was yelling at me after asking for an update on the hot tub move. During the call, John told me to shut up and that I was threatening him (in reference to needing a back up plan if he did not show up to move the hot tub). John showed up to my partner's house clearly irate and needed to be calmed down before being able to talk about the service issues. John eventually apologized via text, but I started feeling very uncomfortable and unsafe around him (eventually locking myself in the house when he dropped off materials). Hot Tub Damage: John's team damaged the hot tub during the move. We also asked him to drop it off in the driveway so it was not on the grass, but he assured us it would only be in the side yard for a week. It was on the side yard for nearly a month. Our project was not completed by John because of all the issues and as we were looking for another contractor we found out the following: The frame he was going to pour into was bowed and would not have had a clean finish There was not enough rebar for a 12 by 12 pad He needed to dig out the pad to lay at least 2 to 4 inches of stone which he said he did not need to do and trust that he was doing the job correctly. We are trying to resolve this amicably with John, but unfortunately we had to file in small claims court. John also tried to press criminal charges on me, but the police advised that my review and filing did not constitute harrassment. This a recommendation received when asked why there was work being done and the permits were not paid for. I thought it was important to update this review. On 10/22, I was able to speak to the insurance company on John's certificate of liability insurance certificate. I was advised my claim would be denied because the policy was cancelled by the insurance provider for nonpayment back in April.
