We had a tree scraping the roof and sides of the house. We wanted to prep for windy conditions but also make sure the tree stayed healthy and didn't look chopped. Cody's was both great and actually responsive and quick. They did an amazing job of assessing the situation and trimming back the canopy in a way that puts in a fire gap, protects the roof, and barely looks altered from most angles. Our neighbors even came out to say how good of a job they'd done, and how quickly they'd done it. Full safety gear - harnesses, helmets, and all. (I'm a stickler for safety.) I happened to catch Frank as he was out estimating some complicated tree work for a couple of my neighbors. Their jobs involved a crane and some pretty significant trimming high up in large pines. (They were both very satisfied with how things turned out.) We also had a larger pine that had a number of large limbs overhanging the street that needed to be removed. Fast, knowledgeable, kind, and an amazing deal. We had a tree that fell while we were out of town. It was relatively close to a wire, but ended up falling into the tree across our driveway. Still a major safety hazard. Between having to walk under it to use the drive way to get to the front door, and the fear of it hitting a wire and exploding the power lines, causing a forest fire. I called multiple tree services, looking for quotes and how quickly they could come out. Cody was the first on the scene. He gave me the quote which was easily the most reasonable and cheapest out of all the estimates I had received after he had left. I called him to confirm that we wanted to move forward. No joke, within 5 minutes of my call, two climbers arrived at our house. I thought they were another company coming to do an estimate. So, I was shocked when I met them at the driveway and they said they were from Cody's coming to remove the tree. Despite it being a tricky, complex, and potentially dangerous situation, they got the tree down in under 20 minutes. They said someone would come by the next day for the wood removal. But in another surprising move, they arrived 45 minutes later to remove the wood. Amazing service. Those climbers are so talented! Cody was so kind and understanding. He told us we had to have the trees permitted. I had a tree I needed cut down. I got a few different estimates and Cody's Tree service was not only the best price, but the best customer service. Frank called me to talk about the work that needed to be done. Frank noticed another tree leaning that wasn't currently a problem, but could be in the future. Cody's tree service was asked to fell 3 trees & give a price to cut up the trees into rounds that I could split for firewood. The estimator came out & priced out the felling of 3 trees for $600. He stated they would yield between 2-3 cords of firewood. To cut the woods into rounds would be $1350 for a total of $1950. The crew of 3 arrived at 12:45. 1 large tree and 2 small trees were felled on a sloped lot by 1:45pm. 1 man left with the chipper truck who "had to be elsewhere" before chipping any limbs. 2 men were left to cut the 3 trees into rounds. 1 man used a chainsaw on a flat lot and 1 man helped me carry the rounds 20-30 feet to the roadside. In 50 minutes they were finished. This was just under 2 additional man hours of work. the rounds which I split yielded (1) cord of wood, not 2-3. My neighbor stated $1350 to cut up 1 cord of wood into rounds was certainly a mistake. The total must be $950.( $350 more after felling the trees) I asked the 2 remaining crew who seemed puzzled. They gave me Mr Cody's cell number and asked me to call him. Mr. Cody said that he expected $1950. He stated felling the 3 trees on the slope had lots of liability. I agreed and that's why $600 seemed reasonable for that. I stated cutting 1 cord of wood into rounds for an additional $1350 seemed wrong to me. Mr. Cody stated that operating a chainsaw also had liability though he admitted it was less than felling trees. When asked about the price disparity 3 man hours to fell trees, more liability $600 vs 2 man hours (1 chainsaw 1 carrying wood) $1350 he stated it was a $1200 chainsaw and he expected $1950 It gets worse. I asked if he would make up the wood disparity by allowing me an additional cord of rounds from his facility which I would gladly pick up. Mr Cody said I could buy the missing cord from him. I paid him $1950. I only met 1 other man in business like Frank Cody. He was selling $1000 generators for $4000 during a hurricane in Florida. Readers can judge for themselves. I was in need of some large pieces of non-structural timber to make a few custom fireplace mantles. I didn't think we had a business in town that had a sawmill, so I figured I would start calling all the tree removal services and see what they had to say. When I got to Cody's Tree Service listing, I kind of expected the same information I received from the others which was, Nope can't help you, Bye. The phone was answered by a man named Frank (owner) and I could immediately tell that Frank knew what customer service was all about. I explained that I needed some rough cut 12" x 12" X 6' beams and I think he said jokingly, "Is that it". I just spent an hour on the computer and phone getting "NO" at every turn, so I was a little shocked at the answer. It was easy to find right across the street from the Airport on Hwy 50. Just look for the over-sized "People Shrinker" chair facing the highway. And when entering, there is a sign that says Stop, Call (530) 541-8733 first", I assume just in case they are out on a job. But I have no doubt that Frank would get there as soon as possible to help you out. And as soon as I pulled in, Frank greeted me and then showed me the stack of mostly Jeffery Pine that he had run through the mill earlier, but I needed a dimension that would require that "Tree Shrinker" saw of his to accomplish. I was shown wood that was cut so thin you could see through it, as well as a few pieces that nearly maxed out the saws 24" cutting thickness. Since I was not 100% set on my dimensions though, Frank gave me his card and cell number and promised to get back with him in the next day with what I needed. Over the next couple days, every text I sent was promptly answered and once I gave him the exact dimensions, he must have put that saw to work, because the next text, was that my wood was ready to pick up, and the best part was the price. I have no doubt Frank Cody and Cody's Tree Service will have a long lasting business here in South Lake Tahoe with his happy to help attitude. I would have no problem sending my 80 year old grand-mother out there to talk with him about removing trees our buying one of the custom built picnic benches that he made and had for sale.
