Another great LAUSD school I attended after having to leave Clover Avenue Elementary for a Special Ed program. Clover, which is about maybe 7 minutes from Coeur S Alene. They did not have a special Ed class to take care of my needs, so I had to transfer to Coeur D Alene. Which really helped me out. I graduated and still moved on to more advanced classes. I had the best teacher here. I'd rather not give out her name. I recently found her in Social Media. and I'd like to meet up with her one day, and talk about the story of my life. read more

Coeur d'Alene makes me feel like an idiot for having sent my child to private school for a year. Principal Jenkins might come across to some as unsympathetic given his directness, but he truly cares about every child at his school and wants them all to succeed, and he is a highly effective administrator. He knew every kid's name by the end of the first week (there are over 550 kids!). He follows the latest research on education and implements the evidence-based best practices: no homework but encourages 20+ minutes of reading per day, Reader/Writer workshops to build literacy and community, Cognitively Guided Instruction for math education to favor true understanding in place of rote memorization, and Tribes learning community to build empathy and foster a sense of community. We get weekly updates from the teacher about what the class is working on in reading, writing, math, science and social studies, making me feel more involved with my child's education. The community of parents also deserve a strong shout out for helping the school to succeed. The funds raised support teacher aides and essential enrichment programs such as music, theater, gardening (with a new curriculum that meets the National Science Education Standards), and more. There is a big push to support the school, and they often ask for money, but there is complete transparency for how that money is used and it is essential to supplement the paltry LAUSD budget. My child has been at this school (2nd grade) for one month, and it has hands down been her best month of school ever. She is engaged, enthusiastic and excited about school each day. She gets additional help when needed in class, is offered additional problems to work on when she finishes early, and engages with her classmates through discussions of the books they read, math problems they solve, and bugs they discover in the garden. I am thrilled to have joined this school. My only regret is waiting this long. read more

We are starting our second year at Coeur d'Alene. I've been impressed by the close knit sense of community at this school. Principal Jenkins knows all the families and greets the children by name (which is impressive considering how many kids he has to remember)! The parents help out at the school when they can, either with time or money, and we are all happy to contribute to the education and health of our kids. It takes a village! Perhaps the best perk here is the free play time for the kids. When you drop off your child in the morning, she can run and play with her friends on the playground for a few minutes before the bell rings. Parents are chatting, kids are getting the wiggles out, teachers are preparing for the day. They have several recess breaks during the day, several vegetable and flower gardens to tend to, a butterfly garden, a nice library to visit, and they still have PE and music classes. My hope is that our tax money will someday go back to the public schools instead of being diluted by charter schools. Our public schools would be even more successful, and therefore our children more successful, if the financial resources were available to pay for teachers aids, maintenance staff, equipment, and manpower to decrease class sizes. I believe it is better to have superlative, well funded public schools rather than a multitude of mediocre partially funded public and charter schools. The kindergarten at this school is not a good place to put your kid in. I wanted to believe this school was best we could find give it that majority of LAUSD schools are rated very low in multiple categories. I was wrong. Safety is my biggest concern at this stage of my child's learning experience and that is certainly not the case at Couer D Alene. My 5 year old not even a week into the school year has been bullied by the same problematic child during recess and has now come home with his face bloody and scraped after being scratched and hit on for lord knows how long before another child had to go inside to find a teachers assistant to help him. My son told the teacher mrs. Mackalavoy several times and she wrote him off as if it was just an unfortunate event before it got worst. When I went to speak to mackalavoy about this, she sent her assistant in her place and I was told to email her and the insensitive principal, Mr. Jenkins who also showed little care of the situation. I was told it's only 3 helping hands for 50 kids on playground and what do I think they can do under those conditions. So basically during the recess, there's no one who's paid enough to care about the safety of 5 and 6 year old children. This school is not a safe haven for your children at younger ages. Do yourself a favor and keep searching! I know it's hard to find a good public school in LA but for your child's sake and safety, keep searching! Don't bring them to this school read more

I have 2 children who went to Coeur d Alene since Pre k. The pre-k to 2nd grade were great. Above those grade levels wouldn't expect anything more unless you have the privilege to get certain teachers like Mrs Neri Muniz, who goes above and beyond for her students and makes the school look great. My son was very lucky to have her for 3rd and 4th Grade. Now he is in the 5th grade and has Ms. Jessica Alberi who is an AWEFUL TEACHER and needs to go back to being a student aid. In the beginning of the school year I told her about my communication concerns. I've reached out to her and she never communicated back to me. Not once was I given an opportunity to have a parent student conference with her. I asked her for one and she said I was to late to sign up for one. I have her phone number and she has mine. I've text her numerous times. IGNORED. Ms. Jessica Alberi is there to just get a paycheck. As for the overall school my first child who went to Couer d Alene, was no way prepared for middle school. I had to teach her to multiply and divide. She was not prepared for the homework load because all Coeur d Alene requires is that your child reads for 20 min. Coeur d Alene is only concerned about there fund raisers. Might as well home school your child cause that's what you are going to have to do anyway if they are a student here. This is an update: My child who is in 6th Grade now and struggling because in no way does Coeur d Alene prepares there students for middle school. If your kid goes to this school they will fail your child. This common core math that they are marketing is BULL!!! I am having to hire tutors to have my child relearn how to add and subtract. We are pleased so far! Mrs. Pippin is wonderful. My daughter attended TK at Westminster because she had a group of friends going there. It was out of our district. I decided to switch her based on many factors and changing to CDA was so much better for our family! I have to say that even though the school needs some "brightening up" and attention physically, it is SO MUCH more welcoming with trees, gardens throughout and the learning atmosphere is much better in my opinion. Test scores of the school weren't my main concerns. I wanted her to be in a well-rounded, diverse atmosphere and Westminster seemed to meet that desire at the time - BUT.....I must say that the parenting styles at Westminster were sub-par (again, in my opinion) and the kids seemed way out of control and disrespectful. I was warned over and over again by "friends" at that school that CDA is so pretentious and the kids act entitled and spoiled. In my short experience at CDA I must disagree. My daughter is more independent than ever, wanting to be dropped off at the gate to walk to her class line by herself. At Westminster she was afraid and clingy. I truly believe that her peers are better adjusted and much more at her level than at Westminster. There were a HUGE percentage of kids bussed in from low-income areas at Westminster and, sadly, that meant language barriers and slower learning progression because no one could be left behind. Consider this school and disregard rumors. It is well-run but crowded and small. It definitely needs work and does get less funding from the district because it is in a more wealthy area, but I couldn't be happier with the change. We love Coeur D'alene!! The teachers and principal are so involved and supportive of our kids growth and education

Hi My two children attended here. Do not sign up your pre-k child here . Specially if you have a boy. The pre-k teacher is awful. Her name is mrs. Elson. She is rude, racist, sarcastic, and has no pacience with kids. She is very abusive with Kids and parents. If your child does something minor wrong , the school makes your child pick up garbage during lunch. And they also put your child in a much lower grade for a week to punish and embarrass them. They don't even tell you that they do it. And the principal( mr. Jenkins ) is too focused on scores. He is afraid of his staff, so they do anything they want and he backs them up. There is also another teachers aid and her name is mrs. Rosie. She told my son during recess: if I was your mom I would spank you sooo hard you could not move. Only because my son is a very happy energetic Boy. They have cut pe and these poor kids only get to run around during recess. These teachers at Coeur d Alene want these kids to just sit and be robots. And at this school their focus is to fund raise. If you don't give them a big check and kiss up to them and volunteer , then they treat you bad. My both kids were totally abused at this school. My kids are good kids. But now I have moved them somewhere else, they are doing great academically. School is not a struggle any more , not for them and not for me. If your kids is not a once size fits all, then they don't help your kid. My kids were not learning and now they are in another School and they are respected. At Coeur d Alene the teachers just dump your kid to you and when you have questions , they have no time . And another problem is at this school they use parents to help in class with testing and if your kids is not doing great, the parents volunteers gossip and tell other parents about your child's scores and they yell at your kid wheh they don't know the answers. I want a teacher to test my kid , not a parent volunteer. They also don't let kids go to bathroom. They say hold it until break. Shame on them .
