I really like the idea of a coffee shop that has beer.. although I'm sure there are others around and I just need to find them. Because this was just not it. It felt very uninviting and uncomfortable because they have so many rules. The rules related to Covid I totally understand.. except it says if you are going to sneeze or cough you must go outside. I mean, this just seems over the top. what if I forget and sneeze into my elbow? Will I get in trouble? Lol. Also I got in trouble for taking a phone call even though I was the only customer present and there was hip hop music blasting. Just very odd. read more

We've been walking by, waiting month after month for Coffee Beer to open and today we got to finally enjoy this new neighborhood spot. Not only do they have a well stocked bottle and can selection (including kombucha and 0%avb options) they have taps and espresso and a delightful menu of house coffee cocktails. Can't wait to become regulars. Jessica and Phillip were friendly and fun to chat with. Already feels like a great spot to hang with friends, chill with work/grading, or relax with a book in the sun. My partner and I visit Portland several times a year, but we won't ever return to this establishment. Coffee Beer hosted a pop-up with a vendor who uses non-vegan ingredients in their "100% vegan" goods (for reference, Ice Queen PDX uses non-vegan cereals in some of their popsicles). When customers have reached out to Coffee Beer to let them know - so they can be protected from any possible blowback and harm from unwittingly selling non-vegan food at a vegan pop-up - they have responded by blocking customers and deleting comments. An establishment that prioritizes covering their asses (and protecting their friends?) over doing right by their customers is unethical and completely untrustworthy. Vegans & people with allergies have to be able to trust that the establishments they frequent are doing the utmost in due diligence when it comes to keeping their customers safe and respecting their dietary choices & ethical stances. Coffee Beer is not responsible for Ice Queen PDX's choice to continue using non-vegan cereals while calling their products 100% vegan, but they are responsible for not being concerned, responsive, and proactive and instead for trying to silence this information. Cute spot, good vibes, sweet staff, tasty drinks and pastries. I moved to the neighborhood earlier this year and am so happy to have Coffee Beer as a local hangout. They're cautious about COVID, which I appreciate, and have both indoor and outdoor seating (though note that the outdoor seating is not heated). This is literally the cutest coffee shop I have ever seen. They have a beautiful space, the best bathroom mural ever (seriously see it in person, you won't be mad), and plants all around from Citrine Bloom next door!! It feels like a welcoming and warm space that is especially magic during golden hour, that sunset through the upper windows is delightful. Came here twice.. Early one day for coffee and internetting and later one day for a beer and chat with a friend. Staff is friendly, coffee and beer were great and priced normally for Portland. The place gets super bright during the day but they put the shades down so you don't cook. I agree with many of the other one star reviews. I went in one afternoon a few weeks ago. I'm sensitive to caffeine so I usually drink decaf (yes, for the flavor, not the caffeine), especially in the afternoon so it doesn't mess up my sleep. Of course, they don't do decaf. I asked if they have iced tea. At this point, the barista told me I'd be better off going next door to the convenience store for iced tea. I can only assume they meant bottled iced tea, which is not the same as fresh made. I decided to just get an iced americano and asked if they have half and half. I'm sure you can see where this is going... condescending remark about how they are a vegan coffee shop. As far as the coffee goes, it was acidic, which I don't particularly enjoy. They also put very little ice in it, which wasn't great since it was a hot day. It's a shame because the coffee shop is cute on the inside and they have nice outdoor seating, but the vibe thanks to the staff and all the rules other reviewers have mentioned makes it not worth going back. read more

I miss coffee beer from the pre-covid times, but I'm so proud of how they're caring for their community through all of this, and making the right choices to keep employees and customers safe. Pre-covid, they were my favorite neighborhood study spot, with all the non-dairy milk options you could want, & beer to take the edge off when the coffee can't cut it. Now they have dope online ordering options and new guidelines that protect everyone. Stumbled upon this spot needing a place to get a little work done while my kiddo had a class nearby. CB did the trick! Very clean, nicely appointed, and quality drinks & eats. I usually steer clear of vegan food posing as meat, but the BLT sounded like a good way to soak up caffeine. It was damn good. Owner Philip was behind the counter. Super pleasant, greeted everyone as a friend, and set a chill tone. Chatted for a bit, and learned they were open for about 5 months the day I was in. I've passed Coffee Beer numerous times on my way home and had hoped it might replace my late, lamented Kenilworth Coffee House as a neighborhood coffee spot. To be fair, it is only recently opened and they are offering a limited menu at this time (the baked good plates were shiny, clean and, sadly, empty), so it's hard to say what may eventually emerge. However, if you're getting a coffee drink, be aware that - currently at least - the only size is 8 oz, and the milk choices are limited to soy, coconut, or almond. If you're avoiding dairy, this may be great for you. Alas, not for me, so I'll continue to hope another nearby coffee place opens soon. read more

We came here on a Saturday afternoon for a couple of lattes and asked for to-go cups. After we got our drink and trying to leave, it started drizzling so we thought we just stay in. After a few minutes the lady barista/ cashier which we tipped came to us and in a very rude and loud manner told us that we should not be ordering drinks in to-go cups if we want to stay, she shamed us in front of other customers! There's no sign stating we cannot stay inside this establishment with to go coffee cups. And I noticed a recycle and a garbage bin inside the store. I wonder what they put inside that garbage bin??? A pleasant spot, open late, good beer and coffee. But...the food options are poor. Pre-packaged sandwiches aren't acceptable. We had a vegan BLT in plastic wrap that had soggy, stale bread. It was served in the plastic wrap. I would rather see fewer, higher quality food options, made fresh there. My bf and I just visited this place for a light and reasonably priced dinner + drink. We were very pleased! Very clean and orderly inside with a great selection of beers. We had their pesto pizza and vegan BLT. Delicious.(Not made in house but nicely reheated and presented.)
