The convenience is probably the main reason I'm giving four stars. I stopped by because I had extra room in my luggage. Seriously, I don't know what prison architect they got to design this but they did an excellent job on clogged traffic flow, unreasonably tight spaces, and unnavigable tight corners. Plastic tubs of dried fruits and nuts tower on one side of the entry, and fruit and veg on the other. Rows of uniform leeks, beetroots and carrots are crying out to be whizzed up into soups or sizzled into stir fries. I could spend hours exploring their shelves laden with organic oats, lentils, muesli and all manner of other amazing produce. The emphasis here is very much Australian, and they have a wide selection of organic goods here too. What makes Maloneys extra-special is their staff. Extremely friendly and chatty, helpful and efficient. When I reached the checkout, the guy serving me recommended that I buy a different type of passion fruit which was on special offer, thereby saving me about $3. He also helped me pick the ripest avocados and was extremely friendly. I think a shopping experience at Maloneys can best be epitomised by the jar of free sweets they have sitting at each checkout, and the fact they didn't mind that I took two.

Among the obvious variety of fruit and vegetables sold at almost every other fruit shop, Peakhurst Fruit shop acts doubly as a delicatessen selling a huge variety of cold meats and appetizers to satisfy any entree platter. However, the real prize-winner in this place is the fresh home-made gelato (which is too perfect for the upcoming summer months). If you want something a little sweeter than your healthy serving of fruit, be sure to top it off with a fresh scoop of gelato on your next visit to Peakhurst Fruit Shop.

The fruit and vege, though not as extensive as many green grocers, fresh and seemed of high quality. And it should be with the prices they charge. Unfortunately there's just not competition with the supermarkets here. I picked up a bunch of bananas from a pile as I'd see a sign that said $9.99/kg which is pretty cheap these days for bananas even by supermarket standards. I got to the counter and my draw dropped when the price came to $3/banana. Unfortunately due to a slip in concentration I missed the pricier sign for the greener bananas. It was the brown and almost off bananas that were cheap. I take responsibility for this but looking at the prices of their other goods I just don't think I'll shop there again. There is a better-valued green grocer down the road that has clear signage and more variety.

I don't find his prices too expensive and of course they won't be as cheap as Coles but if you pop in and have a chat with Dom he will tell you why and where his fruit & veges come from and then you may find its worth paying that bit extra for the quality. I also found he had all the variety I needed and was able to find everything I needed in my shop there
