Rheinterrassen is the ideal location for a sunny Saturday. We got ourselves a pint of Radler and…read moresat down on the beach chairs with our feet in the sand. It probably had one of the best views of the city, facing the Dom and the Hohenzollernbrücke. The music is very typically 'summer bar loungy', which suits the occasion. Prices are not cheap, but you don't have to pay an entrance fee, so that kind of compensates. If you want to enjoy some shade, you can sit at the tables with parasols. This was the perfect afternoon relax spot after walking through the entire city center.

I am not the sort to sing praises of many places, but Rheinterrassen is a 5-star wedding venue in Köln! Positives The people we were in contact with were wonderful!!! We were treated so well. We were not upsold. They told us what they offered, listened to our requests, provided honest feedback based on their experience, and informed us of the minimum charge based number of guests. We had a contact person (Frau Balz) who answered all our calls including questions up until wedding day. All questions, no matter how minor, were addressed with urgency and in a timely fashion. Food was wonderful. I feared the food on wedding day wouldn't be as good or plentiful as when we had our tasting but that was not an issue. In fact, during the tasting, there was a dish I thought was a bit salty so I made a comment to the chef. I was pleased to taste that issues was addressed on wedding day. The view across the Rhine River into Köln (highlighted by the Dom) is as good as it gets in the city Negatives I speak English but the preferred language is German. Yay for me; too bad for my German wife who did most of the coordinating. Washrooms are downstairs (away from reception area) and they are public toilets for use by the entire restaurant. Honestly, not a big deal but just an FYI. Of all the people we dealt with, there was only one person who was somewhat cranky. She was a bartender who started later on the evening of the wedding. We kept the party going until past 4am so I can understand her not being so chatty...

We booked a standard suite, but were upgraded to one with an extra 1/2 bath. Some of the suites have a traditional decor, and others are more modern (ask for "the Hanseatic Wing"). We preferred the more modern decor and the staff were happy to oblige us. Overall, the staff was wonderful: friendly, helpful, and professional. We were always welcomed, and any request or question was responded to quickly and professionally. The staff elevated the hotel and turned a really good stay into a great one. Our room was spotless, and very nicely appointed. There were tons of closets and more than enough towels--no skimping. The shower was not just a rain shower head, but a deluge. It was the best shower that we can remember having used in a hotel, which is saying quite a bit. Breakfast (included in our rate) was a full buffet with the usual museli, meats, cheeses, pastries, etc plus a menu for eggs and French toast type items. All were prepared well, served elegantly, and in a comfortable and well appointed room. It was generally faultless. The hotel's location in Köln can't be beat. It is around the corner from the train station, and across the street from the Dom. The entire historic portion of Köln and the shopping district is within 15 minutes walk. There are many restaurants to choose from within a very short walking distance, including a great bakery (Bäckerei Merzenich) only 5 minutes walk away.
