It's days later and I'm still thinking of that caprese ciabatta sandwich- the bread was soft but had a nice crunch. Flavors were balanced well! The menu has enough options that virtually anyone should be able to find something they like. We were seated next to the window which gave a nice amount of natural light; the back room looks pretty dark. The Kitchen Sink ice cream order looks like a feat but we were all too full to try. We ordered a kahuna krunch and a cinful pie. The latter was good, but nothing out of this world; basically apple pie a la mode with cinnamon. The kahuna krunch was outstanding. It had chocolate AND chocolate chip ice cream, banana, fudge, caramel, nuts, waffle cone, whipped cream... I probably could have eaten the entire thing myself lol. We had a nice time here and enjoyed the desserts. I don't remember the pricing at Oberweis, but Colonial does seem a tad bit overpriced. I would definitely not recommend this place for ice cream. I ordered a 1-scoop coffee Sunday but received vanilla instead (ironically, this was after they went to check if they had coffee ice cream, LOL). The vanilla ice cream did not taste fresh (you could taste tiny bits of frozen ice in the ice cream and it wasn't a normal kind of creamy). My husband's Sunday was the same. He also didn't get the flavor he ordered for his 2-scoop Sunday and it didn't taste fresh. The portions were very small compared to other places, which I guess worked out since the ice cream was not good. The waitress was friendly, so I still tipped her 20%. Love coming here for breakfast and brunch. You walk in, you're greeted and seated quickly, even when you need to wait there's a cow statue by the entrance that can entertain the kids. The wait staff is always friendly and gives you space while you enjoy your meal. The food is delicious, the French Toast combo is always a winner, and there's always leftovers to take home for later. It's my first time at this restaurant because I am from out of town. But it will not be my last. Upon entering I noticed a very clean restaurant which is important in these times. I was seated promptly and had my coffee moments after. I ordered the sausage gravy and biscuits with two eggs and potatoes and hand patties sausage. I'll preface that my family and I have been coming here for 20 + years. Today I got caught in the rain after getting my nails done next door, so I walked in and ordered a milkshake and bowl of soup to go. The manager on duty took the order and checked me out. The restaurant was not crowded--I would say a decent sized crowd for a Thursday afternoon. I proceeded to wait 25 minutes for my order. Several other employees checked in on me, assuring that my order would be up soon. I stood up at the to go desk, staring down the manager until he would make eye contact with me, upon which he finally came over and then made my shake, placed it on the countertop and muttered sorry. I politely shared that I was also waiting on a bowl of soup, he glared at me and walked away in a huff. Pretty good overall! [Atmosphere] Kinda has a Applebee's kinda feel to it. So it feels more like a lunch/dinner spot rhan breakfast because of the furniture used, darker color tones, and TVs. During our meal, someone was cleaning somewhere with a cleaner that smelled like a hockey locker room. No one wants to smell that during dinner. This is one place where my kids visited more than myself for birthday parties or after game treats. They have shared the "Kitchen sink" sundae, they have tried the Oreo shakes, they have eaten all kinds of ice creams. They loved it so I had to try it with them last week for a fundraising event of my son's school. It is a nice typical Cafe place. The decor is kind of dated. I really liked it as all staff there were happy to see us. My kids played with the cow statue a bit at the entry. We sat down in the middle of tables full of families with young kids. The waitress was super friendly and nice. We went after dinner so we had the frozen yogurt, the Oreo shake, and the strawbery ice cream. I don't think whoever could complain about the sweet treats. Colonial Cafe fits the vibe of a quintessential breakfast spot. The service was very friendly and the menu has lots of options. I had the breakfast burrito which was filled with chicken chorizo avocado eggs and veggies topped with a salsa verde which was really good. It also came with pinto beans and the choice of hash browns or roasted potatoes. My girlfriend had the Mexican skillet of which I had a bite and it was also very good. The menu in the restaurant is different than the one shown online and all the breakfast eggs included ham or other meat. Service was kinda slow for the time that we were there (after lunch rush on a weekday and not at all busy). The restaurant was larger than we expected. Thick cut multi-grain bread with a generous slather of fresh ripe avocado sprinkled with sea salt. Simple, clean, and very tasty. I couldn't help but order a new side called loaded hash browns. It was a base of Colonial's crispy hash browns with onions, green pepper, ham, and a mountain of cheese. Wow! Definetly order again. I wouldn't normally order a hot chocolate at a sit down establishment but I saw a menu card on table advertising flavored hot chocolates. My group tried the raspberry and peanut butter hot chocolate. All I can say is blegh. My husband and I went for dinner after visiting my mum at Edward Hospital, I had come here in the past with my dad and had many fond memories. Suffice to say, I puked before we left. I had the steak and shrimp entree, it wasn't cooked to order and it tasted really awful. One of my shrimp still had a shell on it and the second side (my fries) the entree comes with never came until the check did. My husband's pot pie wasn't even pot pie, it was a concentrated filling served like soup with a round piece of pie crust in the center. I got really bad food poisoning and was in the bathroom all night, out both ends and I wish we hadn't gone at all. We didn't get drink refills once and it was hard to talk to our server because the host placed her as a server for a party in the very back of the restaurant. The bathroom soap dispenser is broken and continues to dispense soap after your initial pump and there was a huge puddle of soap on the countertop. The carpets in there were filthy. Been going to the place for 30 years. The last few times the service is just beyond horrible. Was there last night with a table of 8 and one of the kids spilled a water. Waitress walked past us cleaning it up twice without offering napkins or assistance. We just sat there with soaking wet table and all of napkins used. Worst experience ever. We walked in the restaurant and if was fairly empty on a Friday night and the hostess told us we had to wait to be seated. I looked at the restaurant and asked why and she said the kitchen was behind. I insisted on at least sitting as we were in a bit of a hurry and we chose the restaurant because of speed. We got seated with less than a smile and we had a nice waitress who tried as she could but the scope of the job was beyond her. She didn't listen to what we said and we had to repeat several times. I had to beg for a drink refill and the food was subpar. And avocado toast was 10.99. Whattttt??? When we wanted to leave we once again had to beg for our bill and went immediately to pay. The lovely hostess saw us coming and walked away...tmw he seated someone and then walked away to the ice cream bar where she chatted with someone..then she walked to the kitchen ..then the place where they put the dirty dishes where she talked with someone else. She clearly saw us and knew we were in a hurry and chose to walk away- so rude. So there were two people who were at the ice cream bar and I asked them to take my bill. I went here yesterday with a group of girlfriends for breakfast and enjoyed my meal. It was my first time here in at least 10 years. I do know many years ago I came to try a "kitchen sink" filled with ice cream. If you've never had the kitchen sink, it's a Colonial Cafe specialty and you will even get a bumper sticker for finishing it. When we were arrived, we were seated right away. They even put together a larger table than we needed because we weren't sure how many people we had. For breakfast I had a Monterey jack omelette which was very good.
