I recently got engaged, and we are using my grandmother's rings. They needed to be resized so we took them to colonial the day after we got engaged. Not only did the woman not offer us any congratulations, she made me feel very bad about the rings. She said that they were very old (obviously) and worn and would need a lot of work in order to even begin to think about resizing. After talking with the jeweler she came back out and said it would cost over $2700.... that's right, two thousand and seven hundred dollars. I took it to two other places to see what they said and they both quoted resizing at the exact same price of $85 each. When I asked about the condition of the rings, they both said that two of the prongs could be fixed but other than that my grandma must of kept good care of them and after they clean them they would look brand new. So I ended up spending $240 somewhere else and my rings look beautiful. I am beyond confused why colonial thought that $2700 would be a fair price, and I will certainly not be going back there. read more

Very disappointed in my recent experience with Colonial Jewelers. I called and spoke with someone about getting my Movado watch serviced. They do not sell Movado, but I had my watch serviced there several years ago and on this call was told they would still handle that service (via sending the watch out). Thus, we made an appointment for me to meet with Amanda and when I arrived at the store I was brusquely told that they do NOT sell or service Movado watches. I explained about my previous history with them and phone conversation in which I was told they would indeed service my watch. They would not. They clearly didn't inform all staff of this change, which meant I wasted an hour+ of my time to drive there only to walk away with my watch and a half-hearted apology. My prior experience was better, but both times I've gotten a snooty vibe from the staff. No need to return to Colonial when there are other fine jewelers in town. read more

My husband bought my engagement ring there and we also bought our wedding rings. Janine, I know I misspelled her name, is fantastic. I also have a promise ring my husband gave me a few years ago that he bought from a jeweler in Alabama. They do not have any problems cleaning it or resizing it. In fact, we have my son's girlfriend's grandmother's ring there right now being cleaned and resized for him to give it to her for Christmas. Everyone there is friendly and helpful. I recently got engaged, and the ring is absolutely gorgeous! We went to look at rings together, and Mary Ann assisted us. She was very sweet and attentive. Six months later, Mary Ann remembered my unique ring style. With the help of Mary Ann, my fiancé designed a custom engagement ring, and it was perfect. After purchasing the ring, they offer a free manicure, champagne, polish kit, and professional polishing every six months. I recently visited this establishment because I wanted to have a few stones looked at for identification and worth from my travels. Plus their website stated they had a gemologist in house and that they were a family owned establishment. I called the place a day ahead to see if I needed an appointment. I spoke to a nice girl over the phone and she said that I did not need an appointment. I showed up and I felt like I was in the twilight zone. No one initially spoke to me when I walked in they all just stared kind of like "how dare she walk in this store". It was really uncomfortable and an icy reception. Then the girl at the front finally asked if she could help me. I told her I had called the day before to get some stones I had collected looked at for identification. She spread my stones out and took them to the back to a man sitting at a desk. He did not even look up from his computer and then a minute later sent her away. She came back stating the he thought they looked fake. I was really mad because he did not even look at them and he never came out of the office to speak to me about them. So I took my stones to another gemologist and he verified that I had two rubies and a few other rare stones. I am thankful that I did not listen to the fraud or unprofessional person at Colonial Jewelers. I would never use them or recommend them to anyone I know. I hope others read this posting before deciding on a jeweler this establishment is not the one!!! I just read the reviews on Google and noticed that this is not the first time that they have treated someone that is African American this way. Also read that they are known for ripping people off!! Janeene worked so hard to discuss my options, worked with me to make sure I found something in my budget...and when what I wanted was slightly outside of my budget offered an interest-free 3 month payment period! She helped make sure my dream of giving this to my husband on our wedding day come true-- and his dream of owning his first Rolex came true too! My boyfriend (now fiancé!) bought my engagement ring at Colonial and cannot stop singing its praises. He stopped by numerous times before picking up the ring to make sure it was perfect, changed the design and diamond to suit my ever-changing Pinterest, and was offered beer, wine, and other refreshments every time he visited. He worked with Serena, whom I had the pleasure of meeting when I went to have the ring resized. She immediately came over, remembered my fiancés name and gushed over how perfect the ring looked on my finger. I was sad to have to give it back for resizing, but she promised to call as soon as it was available and offered to sit down with us to look at wedding bands when we were back to pick up the engagement ring and I can't wait! read more

My now fiancé and I went to colonial jewelers about a year ago to look at engagement rings. Mary Ann helped us mainly but everyone was so kind and warm. We narrowed it down to the few rings that I liked the most and then she measured our fingers and made a card up of what we liked. It was a super special time and they certainly made us feel that way. The next day I called just to let them know what an incredible job they did and how special they made me feel. When my fiancé went and purchased the ring it came with a little goody bag full of things, and we got to go back to ensure it was fitting properly. Again an amazing experience. I often want to just stop by to say hello to Mary Ann because she is truly so good at her job and made my fiancé and I feel like friends not just another client. Long overdue review: I picked out my beautiful engagement ring in 2014 and my wedding ring in 2015. Marianne was "our person" and took really good care of us: she remembered us every time we came in. Not only are my rings breathtaking and very well made, but also very sturdy and unlike any other rings I see around. My wedding ring had small diamonds in it, and they were matched to my engagement ring. Every time we came in, my ring was cleaned free of charge. Additionally, my rings were soldered together free of charge after the wedding. I really love this unique jewelry store in historic downtown Frederick especially compared to no-personality mass production stores like K-jewelers and such. read more

Be careful! My husband bought me a simple gold chain necklace with mother of pearl small pendant on it. I was looking for something simple in gold and with the lights shining on it it looked like what I wanted. However, the chain was too short so we paid $100 for a 2-inch extension. The necklace ended up costing $1100. We waited a week for the 2-inch extension. There were no diamonds in this necklace and without the lights shining directly on it, you it was just... blah. As my husband said, "It looks like a $35 necklace". We took it back after I wore it once and explained the problem. I tried to find something else but there was very little selection in simple gold necklaces. When we said we wanted to return it, the owner came out and said that we could not get a refund for the 2-inch extension that cost $100. She also said there would be an $87 restocking fee!!! So buying and returning the necklace cost us $187!! I insisted that I wanted the 2-inch extension back (she didn't offer to give it back) since I already saw a necklace in the display case with an extension and I didn't want them to make more money off the extension. It took less than 30 seconds for the person in the back room to remove the extension and return it. So what was the $87 restocking fee for? We WERE repeat customers (3 different diamond rings and wedding band) but NEVER AGAIN. I took the 2 inch extension to a reputable gold exchange company. The 2-inch extension was worth $4. Buyer beware--prices are way over the top--they have to pay the security guard and the 5 people standing around. read more

My husband and I went to Colonial Jewelers to get my grandparent's wedding rings resized to use for our wedding. I also had them take one of my grandmother's diamonds out of its current setting and place it into a new one that I could wear as a pendant. We spoke mostly with Elizabeth and she was absolutely wonderful. She was always polite and friendly. She advised us on how to size the ring to accommodate my husband's fingers tendency to swell up. This place presented a barrier to a VETERAN with a Service Dog. They claim the owner is allergic to dogs. They claim they have since learned the Federal law allowing Service Dogs, but a phone call was answered by a new employee who said they DO NOT ALLOW DOGS. After speaking with Patty Hurwitz, she said the new employee had not read the handbook, and that the guards DO know service dogs are allowed. I will be taking my business elsewhere, my dog is always welcome at KAY Jewelers, and Old Towne Jewelers in Walkersville. Besides, I have known of Colonial since 1964 and they are very high priced for what you get read more
