We have hired ColorTheory twice, each time to paint a portion of our 1902 victorian home in Dorchester. The first time, we had them scope out the entire building but discovered some plumbing issues that cut into the budget. They were very gracious about reducing their estimate to cover only the ground floor. The second time, after the aforementioned plumbing issues were resolved, they came in to paint a portion of the upstairs. Brad and Ben are, first and foremost, very strong and intuitive designers with a keen sense of color and structure. They pushed us to go outside of our rather conservative color palette ("it's just paint!") and everyone who has visited our home has remarked on the beautiful and dynamic colors that they helped us pick. They are also meticulous craftsmen. We are still finding little details where they obviously spent much more time than they expected - but "did it right," even as the project stretched on longer than expected on their estimate. ColorTHEORY? More like colorTHERAPY, and man did my wife and I need it by the time we got around to calling Brad and Kendra. Desperately seeking help after getting nowhere for weeks trying to pick out colors for our new house, I was ready to call Dr. Phil. My wife, thinking more rationally, called ColorTHEORY. Service 1, the color consult: Brad showed up to our new,empty house (recently vacated by the previous owner) armed with a book of paint ranges, and got right down to it. He spent a lot of time getting to know our likes/dislikes in general before even cracking open the binder, and even helped us with a bit of organization in terms of what painting/pictures to put in what rooms. Honing in on our personalities using that info, he then walked us through the house room by room and helped us select in a morning the colors we couldn't select previously in a month. It was more like having a conversation with a friend then doing a dreaded chore prior to move in. Crisis averted. Marriage saved. Peace in our time. Service 2, the paint job: even though colorTHEORY wasn't the cheapest game in town for the actual paint work, we felt it was worth paying a little extra (really not a lot extra though) to use a company that had already earned our trust and knew exactly what we wanted in every room. Very prompt, very thorough, and very willing to work around our occasionally ridiculous schedule of contractors tromping around the house while Brad & co. patiently painted around us. None of the painters I've used in the past have been so careful with the detail and so clean around the trim and ceilings. Worth every penny. The verdict: ColorTHEORY was one of the easiest companies we've worked with while spending two months getting the new home ready. I especially recommend the color consult, as it will save you pain, aggravation, and the deep regret of going with a horrid color that you want to cover up right after you finish. For paint alone, if you have any sort of molding, trim, etc., know that these guys will handle it with care and your rooms will look brand new when complete. Very pleased with my color consultation. Brad, one of the partners came out to our home and spent an hour going room to room with me in our 2,800 sq ft condo. We had just moved in, so not a lot of the stuff was out, but Brad really focused on what my vision was for each room and really listened. He took a number of pics for reference and two days later we had a digital packet with detailed pics on colors and accents. Our place is a gut renovated Victorian with tons of odd places. There were more color recommendations that I can literally count. Sadly we could not hire ColorTheory to do the actual paint job, as it was pricey for us. However, our painter used all the recommended colors and the place looks designer quality. Huge compliments on color but we were willing to take some creative risks and it paid off. read more

We recently moved into a brand new condo in Salem and were anxious to change the basic beige paint which was on every wall of our 2,000sf unit. After several discussions with my husband and a few trips to Lowes to look at paint strips, we quickly realized that we were not even sure what colors to use and what would actually enhance the environment of our home. I was convinced I was going to make a big mistake choosing my own colors so I decided to seek out some help. A quick search on Google produced colorTHEORY in the South End. Having been denied by a few painting companies because of the 16 foot walls in our loft, my husband and I were skeptical we'd find a paint and design team willing and able to paint and wall paper our space. Luckily we were referred to ColorTheory by a free lance painter friend , (who was also unable to work with our space), who knew their reputation and abilities. Brad, at ColorTheory, not only accepted the challenge of our space, but he surpassed our expectations. We had an idea of what we wanted for the space, but not the refined eye to put it all together. Upon a color consult Brad selected the paint colors and the wall paper based upon our style, our furnishings, and personal lifestyle. And his selections were spot on. All in all, he painted our loft with 16 foot walls, including a 16 foot stair case, 2 bathrooms, and a kitchen ceiling with exposed beams, wall papered a 16 foot wall, and painted railings within the loft. We also had art pieces we were unsure of what to do with. He knew exactly where, and how, to hang them within our space to get the maximum wow factor. I hired colorTHEORY to paint my one bedroom condo in the South End. From start to finish, Brad and Kendra were very easy to work with and always responsive to my emails. Brad came out to scope the job and get some color ideas. I liked that they use Benjamin Moore paints. The quote was reasonable. Slightly on the high end, but in between two other quotes I got. He suggested a gray color palette for all three rooms (LR/kitchen, bedroom, bathroom). Very different shades for each room, but still all in the gray family. It threw me a little. I don't particularly think of myself as a "gray" person. But I did want to push myself a bit color-wise. And I looked at a lot of different pictures of his suggested colors on houzz.com, and individually I thought they looked really nice. So I gave him the ok. He and Nick worked very quickly and efficiently. The whole job took about 4.5 days. The quality of the work is excellent, from the ceilings, crown molding, walls, doors and baseboards. I had a lot of damaged baseboard trim and there were some holes in the walls, and they patched them up very nicely. Brad had some great ideas for accent colors on the crown molding and doors. The place was a bit dirty when they were done, though nothing unreasonable. It took me about 3-4 cleanings of the hardwood floors to get all the dirt out. There was some paint splatter on the floor along all the walls. I used a soft scrubbing sponge and my fingernails and got most of it out. In retrospect, I should have spent more time on the color selection. Living with gray walls in every room is a little cold. If I do decide to update the colors in another year, I'd definitely consider using colorTHEORY again. read more

I hired Bad and Kendra to give my home in Newtonville a face lift. I told Kendra over the telephone that that we did not plan on staying in our home for more than five years, so we wanted to make changes but not big costly ones. She got it! They arrived at our home and I could tell by the way Brad was looking around that he immediately knew exactly what to do. We went through what we had in the house and made some decisions on what would remain and what would be eliminated. Within a day Kendra sent me an email with pricing and examples of boards they had created for other clients. Two weeks after our initial meeting, they came back to the house and presented three layouts with samples of rugs, fabrics, paint, etc. We spent a few hours and moved around some furniture until we came up with a plan. At first I was a little hesitant to go with some of their recommendations, (they were bolder then I would have chosen), but Brad said 'trust me this is going to look great". After a whirlwind shopping trip with Kendra and Brad, reupholstery and savvy art placement, voila our house was reborn. Brad was so right! We love everything!! Brad and Kendra of colorTheory are a rare find in the Boston designer world! I sought them out for a couple of projects and they were able to envision and implement wonderfully creative color palettes as well as reimagine the interior design of the space. The first project was a complete Lobby and front entry redesign in our condo building in Coolidge Corner, Brookline, including a new color palette and furnishings. The building is essentially a traditional style and we wanted the Lobby to reflect a more modern aesthetic. The tricky part here was that we needed it to appeal to all the residents in the building and they hit the mark with a modern palette that has changed the look and feel of the entire space! The transformation has given a whole new ambiance to the Lobby and provides a welcoming and inviting space for all the residents! The next project was my own home in the building and I wanted an entire refresh and redesign. I had a general sense of the colors and design aesthetic that resonated with me and asked them for a "funky, timeless, modern elegance with a drop of the unexpected" and that's what they delivered! "color THEORY Boston" and its talented owners, Brad and Kendra Dufton, are amazing. When our company re-located us to Massachusetts, we had to find a home very quickly and didn't have time to pick colors for every room, so we painted the whole house one color. While we were able to move in quickly, after several years we were tired of the blandness and wanted to add color. But since our home furnishings and art work is quite eclectic, we had no clue where to begin and how to tie it all together. The task seemed daunting. Plus, we weren't too thrilled with the prospect of living with the chaos that accompanies any major re-decorating project. While we didn't know where to begin, Brad surely did. He has such an incredible eye for color and the creativity to put things together in unexpected but beautiful combinations. After the initial walk through of our house, Brad went back home and, as he said, let everything he saw "marinate" a while. Brad actually said, and I believe him, that he will sometimes wake up in the middle of the night when an idea comes to him. So, after about a week, we got a very professionally prepared proposal in a PDF file that laid out a total plan for our home, every room, every color detailed so we had a complete picture of the vision Brad created and how it all fit together. I will say that there were a few ideas that my wife and I thought "wow!...is that going to work?" But by that time we had total confidence in Brad's vision and taste and we said "do the whole job as you see it". That was the best decision we made. Our home has been transformed into a real jewel. We hired colorTHEORY to paint the interior of our loft and must say design wise it was one of the best decisions we have made for the space. We had completed a full renovation of the home some five years ago yet thought the space needed to be refreshed, so thus began my project. I was initially looking, first for only for a color consultant. Given the layout of my space I needed help with colors that transitioned well and while not totally new to design find this process a bit overwhelming. Through research I found colorTHEORY and am so grateful that I did. From our initial correspondence where I was simply enquiring on fees of the color consultation and services, to our first meeting with the team I was blown away. The husband and wife team of Brad and Kendra have such a flawless system in place they really are pleasure to work with. Kendra is readily available via email and answers any and all questions promptly and succinctly. Brad the artist came in our home and was able to immediately identify colors that we would have never of envisioned, yet all work so incredibly well. I hired Color Theory to hang wallpaper on a small wall in my apartment, and from start to finish, the entire experience was awful. To start, Brad, the one who did the wallpaper installation, was not very pleasant, but as long as they did a good job, I would have been happy. However, after leaving him in my apartment to complete the job, which should have taken a half a day, at the most, I found out that he could not complete the job, since he ran out of paper. That is understandable, I assumed, having been new at this, so I had to order more paper (paid additional shipping cost, and waited weeks for it to arrive), and tried to set up another day for him to finish the job (only about 2' of wall left). Although Kendra was very friendly over email, Brad was so unprofessional and rude, he eventually refused to come and finish the job for me, and canceled late the night before he was scheduled to come, which is extremely unprofessional in my opinion. I had to seek out someone else to finish the job, and since this person was very experienced, unlike Color Theory, he told me several things that Brad did wrong, and explained to me how the finish product could have come out much better. It was a very easy job for him, and anyone with experience would have no problem making it perfect. However, Brad did not cut the wallpaper correctly, which left the paint on the wall to show through along the edges. If he actually did have experience, he would have known that would have been an issue, and suggested that it be primed before the expensive wallpaper went up. In addition, he left my apartment a mess - I don't believe he laid a cloth down on the room, since it was not clean when I got home at all. My husband also nearly slipped and fell when he was taking a shower, because Brad apparently used the bath tub, without my permission, to dispose of the glue or whatever he used to hang the wallpaper. I was also told he could have used the wallpaper that was left to hang at least another foot along the wall, but instead, after he left, he told me I had run out of wallpaper. If Color Theory intends to be successful in their business, I suggest they start conducting themselves in a more professional manner, actually be NICE to their customers, and only perform the services they are trained and have experience in (i.e. not wallpaper installation). read more
