This place is the real deal! It isn't going to win any awards for ambience-- it's a somewhat unglamorous, fluorescent-lit restaurant- but the food is next level. We had a whole spread for six people including lotus root, cucumber salad, the fried pancake thingies, a sautéed spicy lamb dish, and one with sliced potatoes and pork. There was a common thread of spicy but not crazy spicy (not quite like Szechuan but not totally dissimilar, either), and everything was in this sort of category of being oily but not greasy, if that makes sense. The food was made in a very timely manner and the staff were nice! Just ordered spring rolls, scallion pancakes and the potstickers. HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! Dined in. We were the only customers dining in at this restaurant. We were treated like garbage. To start we were told we could only have white rice with our entrees; fried rice was an extra charge of like $12. I realized this was a lie when I overheard the owner ask another customer if they preferred white or fried rice with their entrees. I Asked for tea and was given GLASSES of boiling hot water. When confronted with the question about the glasses of hot water we received a giggle as her response. Requests for condiments were ignored. FYI, This horrible service was provided by the female owner. She even had the audacity to frown because I left absolutely no tip! As the owner of an empty restaurant, I'm sure she will be A-OK without my tip money! Who else can I complain to! Update... She took a tip! I woke up this morn to see that the original charge was updated. She added a tip to the bill after I scratched off the tip section and signed the ticket, stealing my money. She treated me like crap then expected me to pay her personally for awful service and out right disrespect. She got angry enough to STEAL MY MONEY! A small group of us met at Colorful Yun Nan for a Sunday lunch. While it may not look like much from the outside, C.Y.N is a rather large place with plenty of room. We all grabbed a booth and ordered an entree each along with a single app. We shared everything and still had a little to take home. We started with grilled lamb skewers. They were ok, but a good way to start us off. Our mains were Hot & Spicy Fish & Tofu, BBQ Pork, Three Chopped Veggies, and Eggplant with String Beans. I didn't touch much of the fish dish so cannot comment for myself, however, there was none left which I'm sure is a good reflection. My favorite was the eggplant, which kind of surprised me. I can't quite describe why, but I kept going back for more. It was very authentic. The BBQ pork was also quite tasty and came with plenty of meat. The chopped veggies were solid, but only number three on my list given the other choices. The bowl was piled high with veggies and it went well with rice. I've been meaning to check out this restaurant for a while. I was a fan of Chef Tan across the street, but their quality has gone down a little. So, my family and I finally made it out for a lunch meal. First of all, the dining area is much larger than you'd expect. It shares space with a Greek clothing shop, so I always thought it was more like a take out place. But you can easily fit 50-60 people at a time. The food is definitely not what you would find in an Americanized Chinese restaurant (although they do have some of those dishes). We tried a dry pepper chicken dish, which is one of our favorites from Chef Tan. Meh...it was too salty and lacked that vibrant flavor. The shrimp mei fun that we ordered for our sons was decent. The seafood noodle soup was inedible. My wife tried to order something different and she was not rewarded for being adventurous. After a few bites, she gave it to me. I can eat just about anything, but I struggled to eat this dish. Our one waitress spoke no English. She would repeatedly defer to another lady. The English speaking lady was very nice and even offered our kids some candy (it was around Halloween). read more

Worst. Meal. Ever. Like other reviewers here, I think this place deserves negative stars. TL;DR - horrible customer service coupled with dangerously bad food. You'd be better skipping a meal than eating anything from here. Decided to give this place a try and ordered take out lunch here on a slow day over the Christmas holidays. Was told the order would be ready in 45 minutes. When I arrived on time they had not started cooking my food yet even thought they weren't busy. Three staff members were sitting around. They were essentially waiting until I arrived to pay before finally starting cooking. I had to stand around for 20 minutes for them to fill my order. I ordered four entrees each with brown rice, which they never put in the bag. The food itself was objectively bad. The chicken in our sesame chicken was partially raw, which we discovered two bites into the meal. One of the people eating with us got violently ill for the rest of the day from this chicken. The three other chicken dishes we ordered were rubbery or soggy and tasted horribly. It wasn't a matter of the food simply not being tasty. The food was bad - the chicken was old and spoiled with tons of salt and msg to try to cover it up. We literally could not eat this food and basically took two bites, decided it was vile and threw it in the trash. We all wound up feeling sick from the little we ate. When I called to tell the folks at the restaurant about my experience I was hung up on. Cross this place off your list and save yourself the trouble. There are many MUCH better and convenient options to choose from if you want Chinese or other Asian cuisine in this area. It's probably just a matter of time before this restaurant makes someone really really sick. read more

I have had the opportunity to go several times now to Colorful Yun Nan, and I will say that I am impressed more every time I go. The food is very colorful and authentic, and a lot of it can be ordered spiced to taste (I like hot and spicy food and they will even add a dish of chili paste to take out meals). Time from order to take out is about 10 - 15 minutes. The staff are friendly, attentive and helpful. The food is really good at a great price, and I recommend them because they are not Americanized. Across the street from Chef Tan which is also a very nice place to dine in or take out. The Szechuan and Beijing cuisine dishes from this place are well made with rich ingredients and good technique. This was my favorite place in Delaware. Food is authentic and the flavor is great. My favorite is their rice noodles, which is the most authentic noodle soup I've had in the US. This is my favorite restaurant in the campus University of Delaware. I arrived here 3 days ago and ordered food over the phone. The owner was so kind and sweet I ended up eating my order to go in the restaurant. The sign said "Authentic Chinese Food". I was a bit worried about this but I gave it a shot. I'm ASIAN and I lived in Los Angeles close to the best Chinese restaurants. I was very excited to see their menu. The food was delicious and authentic. I had dinner here everyday for 3 days and each day the chef (her husband) cooked for me and fed me different dishes (Cantonese) every night. It was an amazing and I recommend this place to everyone visiting University is Delaware! Real Chinese Food! I love it. Thank you for being so kind funny and hospitable. The options are the most authentic we've found in the area, and they offer some dishes we ate while visiting China. We went with 4 friends and our son, ordered many different foods. The appetizer tofu was one of my favorites, and the cumin lamb. Wow! An authentic Yunnan Chinese restaurant! I was incredibly excited when I heard that this place would be opening up in Newark. A while back there was no authentic Chinese food in Newark. Yi Palace opened up a few years back, but it's not exactly the most user-friendly restaurant, with high prices and very large serving sizes that make it really only suitable for dining in large groups. And Yunnan food? I've only had Yunnan food one other place, at Spicy City in San Diego. Yunnan food is awesome...bizarre, weird to most people with a Western palate, even more so than other traditional Chinese foods, like Sichuan and Cantonese food, although it does share a few things in common with both Sichuan and Cantonese food (and you will find some traditional Sichuan and Cantonese dishes on the menu here). The alienness of Yunnan cuisine may be because it has had less of an influence on Americanized Chinese food than the cuisines from other provinces...or maybe just because fewer people from Yunnan province have come to the US until recently. Either way, it is really awesome and new and different tasting and I recommend checking it out! I've eaten here twice, both times in groups, and we ordered lots of different things both times, and they were all outstanding. Some of my favorite dishes were the sauteed string beans (very simple, but sooo yummy, perfectly crispy and with lots of garlic), the sliced pork with hot peppers (hot peppers are more of a vegetable than a seasoning here--don't be scared, they're hot but not brutal, and their taste is exquisite), and the sauteed bok choy. For more unique items that you would be less likely to find outside a Yunnan restauarant, we got the appetizer with cold mung bean noodles and shredded carrots. Wow. What a weird dish! Completely new flavors! It had a bit of seaweed, and szechuan peppercorns (that leave a bizarre numbing / tingling sensation in your mouth), and a strange sour-pickled flavor that is hard to describe and unlike anything else I've ever eaten before. Another odd dish that I enjoyed was the dish with chicken and shiitake mushrooms, in a sort of rich oniony gravy sauce. We also had a noodle soup, and it was good, flavorful, and lightly spicy. Oh, and the scallion pancakes here are outstanding! I've had them elsewhere, and here are some of the best I've had them. They're chewy and just perfect. Prices are very reasonable! I'm going to keep coming back...again and again and again, and bringing my friends, because this place is great and I want to see it survive and thrive! Oh, and this is not quite my thing, but they do have a few of the American-Chinese dishes (in a separate section on the menu--the way I like it) if you want to bring a friend who is slightly less adventurous in their culinary tastes. One caveat--this place JUST opened so if you go shortly after reading this review, prepare for some slightly awkward service. Our server was very nice, but this place is still a bit disorganized. I seem to be seeing them figure it out though, as we go along, so I have a strong intuition that it's going to be much better soon, as they figure things out. They also don't have the full menu available yet, and their hours aren't quite full. But it's so good I want to come here anyway! Yeah! Everything I wanted to order she said they didn't have as I was looking at their menu ( spring rolls, chicken with cashews) and then she told me she was just going to cancel our order and hung up! I have eaten here before and it has been ok not great but never again after that! After I was hung up on I called Asian Pinage and they were polite, accommodating and the food was excellent! If you are in the Newark area and are craving Asian cuisine I highly recommend them instead ( FYI -they just don't deliver). I really, really wanted to like this place cuz good Chinese delivery is seriously lacking around here. We chose one dish that did not say "spicy", and one that said a little spicy, but we wrote in, "Not spicy, please." The first one was unbelievably spicy but we thought we could tolerate it by eating it with a lot of rice. That didn't work. The second was absolutely intolerably spicy hot. Apparently the staff cannot read English, or don't pay attention to the comments added to online orders. We probably should have known this by the blatantly bad English on the menu.
