An enthusiastic THUMBS UP for La Tranquera. They were rather full on a Sunday afternoon, and yet…read morethey seated us anyway at a great table. The empanadas were amazing! I grew up eating my aunt's empanadas, and I thought I knew how empanadas should taste. As soon as La Tranquera's empanadas arrived at our table, I forgot every other empanada I have ever eaten. These delicious, light and airy pockets of perfection are the new standard for me. We had one of each flavor, and while they were all incredible, the carne criolla one was my favorite. We also had a delicious bowl of samorejo, a creamy, cold tomato soup with tiny pieces of jamon and delicate slices of hard boiled egg. First time for me, but I am a convert. Great food, friendly service, welcoming atmosphere. All in all, a wonderful experience.

The crust was perfect, flaky, but not too heavy or oily. The fillings were even better, so many different interesting flavors to try and seasoned just right. Whimsical was a favorite among us, savory with a hint of sweet and sour from the tomato. Oxtail was rich and tender. Good old ham and cheese was also a favorite for the kids. Moroccan chicken had a such unique blend of spices and a hint of sweet. Yes, I am still thinking about these empanadas.

Foodie destination-probably not but an experience that you shouldn't miss. How the owner Antonio…read morecan handle the place on his own is something to see. Although his English is about as good as my Spanish (which means only very basic words) he made himself understood while explaining various items on the menu and truly made the night something special. From helping us pick the right wine to suggesting his favorite things it was a pleasure "talking" to him the entire night. We had both Gazpachos, both delicious with the Almond one winning. The Garlic Shrimp as well as the Rabbit were both very good. How would I describe the meal - home cooking brought to a high level. (His wife Maria does all the cooking with the help of one other person) So with a bottle of wine the bill came to around $66 US. Make a point of visiting Antonio & his family.

The experience was top-notch from beginning to end - this restaurant really does live up to the hype. We started with sangrias and a complimentary ham appetizer. After, we had a mixed cheese plate and the white almond gazpacho. The cheese plate had 3 types of cheese - all delicious. The white gazpacho is probably not for everyone, but it was unique - a bit like garlicky almond milk. For our main course, we had the rabbit and squid. While the rabbit was very good, the squid was absolutely amazing. We finished the meal with complimentary glasses of port. Antonio made us feel like we were in a private dining room - I would go back to Cordoba just to eat here again!
