The place looks fine from the outside and the check-in process went smoothly, but we knew something had gone awry the second we stepped inside our room. It's a dump, quite frankly. The place was clean, yes, but that's pretty much where the positives end. It's small, cramped, and completely lacking in necessary amenities. Want to sit down? Too bad, here's an uncomfortable stool. How about some TV? You're out of luck, here's a tiny monitor bolted to the ceiling. The worst part, however, is the bed. The tiny, uncomfortable, horrible bed. It's a small twin that's clearly seen better days, and feels way too hard and springy to provide any rest or relaxation. I barely slept that first night and my feet were hanging off the end of the bed the whole time. It enraged me, to put it mildly. I spent the following day dreading going back to that dump, but fortunately (I guess) I became violently ill and we decided to cut our trip short. We had pre-paid for three nights and now we weren't going to use two of them, but do you think they refunded our money for the days were weren't going to be there? Of course not! We were offered a free night on a return visit, but that's gonna be the hardest of passes from me. So we essentially paid $475 for a one night stay at the worst motel I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. I'm astonished Auberge St. Jacques has managed to hang around for so long. Please, please, please, learn from my awful experience and stay somewhere else. *Anywhere* else.

If you are a guest, well know that the staff here is also trying to make your stay comfortable behind the scenes in interactions like this. I saw a lot of reviews for state of the room and quality of stay, but those reviews honestly can be ignored. This was quite literally one of the cheapest options for nightly stays in Montreal. If you had the same comparative price point in the US where we're from, you would see how good this place really is. Either the people here expect a five star uber hotel at this price point, or they haven't really travelled many places. At this price point in DC, Denver, Raleigh and Miami, you can expect a much less. At Auberge St Jacques the beds were clean, no bed bugs, everything that was provided in the room worked, the wifi was accessible and also worked without hiccups. The bathroom was extremely clean and frankly larger than anything you'd find in the US at this price point. You could fit a compact car in that bathroom! Yes, the bar stools are stiff along a mini corner bar, but if you go to any motel at this price point in the US, you won't even have a bar stool. Also, they have soft two ply toilet paper!!! I've been to hotels double this price point where they used the cheap one ply paper toilet paper, so this place even made sure my comfort extended even into the bathroom. I don't know about others, but I don't choose a place to temporarily stay based on the minor amenities like some have based their reviews on. This review isn't based on a bar stool, toilet paper or even a tv. This review is based on comfort. Even though the rooms are probably considered small, they don't feel quite so small due to the boutique and space and energy saving aspects of the rooms. The bed was comfy the bathroom was unique in that it had a bench below the towel racks. The room keys double as your proximity door lock and as a master on/off device for your lights. The 7th floor has an outside terrace with a nice view of the surrounding area. The hotel does not include a restaurant, but food options and coffee service are available. There are a few restaurant and fast food options in the vicinity. However, the hotel is not convenient to the Metro. Your options are to get a bus, a ride, or walk a minimum of 12 minutes. Rooms are relatively quiet but not soundproof - you will hear neighboring doors close, the elevator if nearby, and traffic outside. I wish that either the blinds were a bit better at blocking light or that room-darkening curtains were available, as street light did shine through the blinds at night. Parking is available in a garage under the hotel, however the price per day goes up if you take your car out on any day(s) . My stay here was pleasant, but I personally prefer a hotel closer to the Metro when in Montreal.

Hôtel Terrasse Royale checked those boxes. Located in the Côte des Neiges section of town, Hôtel Terrasse Royale's rooms are up-to-date, fresh, modern despite being a 50 year-old hotel, although the lobby is not large or fancy. We found their staff extremely friendly, plus they offer guest parking garage (for a nominal extra fee) and a number of other amenities useful if you are having more than a one night stay. (FYI - If you have a really extended stay, there is a laundry room in the basement.) We particularly took advantage of the kitchenette, stocked with plates, utensils, etc. They have different room classes, so check both Hôtel Terrasse Royale's site as well as other online travel serves, which provide a lower rate. Due to high demand when booking our trip, our first night ended up in a smaller, yet comfortable room. When changing to a larger suite for the weekend, we had a terrace with a view of the dome of St. Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal. Most importantly, the hotel's situated one block from the Côte-des-Neiges Metro and along a bus line that goes downtown. Beyond the many restaurants in the neighborhood and great bakery café next door, there are several 24 hour shopping options within only a block away: Metro supermarket, Pharmaprix drug store and a nice covered open air farmer's market. The only small issue may be the single guest elevator, which some may consider slow - although the hotel isn't that big. That being said, it's minor considering all the upsides Hôtel Terrasse Royale has to offer.

The room size was more than adequate and the overhead shower was heaven; we really enjoyed the bathroom setup and ease of finding light switches and outlets, and the fridge and TV helped us settle in a little more during down time and post-meal. There was a nice but slightly-obstructed courtyard view, for privacy purposes, that encouraged you to find new ways to enter the stone walking path that weaves throughout the pond and garden area. We had breakfast (not usually included) one morning and the buffet was the way to go. Valet parking and elevators directly to the tenth floor lobby made things easier than most major city hotel stays, and staff at the front desk were extremely accommodating and simplified things for a quick check-in and any needs during our stay (convenience bar has a quality variety of drinks, snacks and sandwiches). What impressed us the most was the rooftop terrace featuring a pool, two hot tubs, a sauna and bar (drinks, apps and entrees available throughout their lengthy pool hours) but also many large trees. If I attract the cost of the rental car based on what it would have cost me to rent for the same length of time directly, the hotel stay was a screaming deal. However I sort of wonder if these customers get the rooms that are more run down because I definitely didn't feel the area of the hotel that I was in was in the best state of repair. Just walking down the hall towards the room you could see the woodwork was banged up and everything just seemed a little run down. Same thing once we got to the room. There was some discoloration in the caulk in the bathroom shower, the floor of which was a little slippery and required a towel to be laid down on the shower floor for traction. The location of the shower head in relation to the shower door resulted in water coming out onto the bathroom floor no matter how hard you try to avoid it and you could see the impact of this over time. The room had a funky smell to it and every time I was in the room my sinuses went crazy, the one night I slept with an n95. The refrigerator on my previous day wasn't very cold at all but this time it was so cold that my energy drink was slush the next morning and so I was very happy with that. The TV as far as I could see only work if you hook it to your telephone and stream your own video, or log on to YouTube as a guest. The safe is nice put your passport and other valuables and is very simple to figure out. There was a clock radio that provided a night light but unfortunately it circulated through all colors which I found kind of annoying at night. A lot of these devices have a setting where you can just choose one color and have it steady instead of circulating and messing with your sleep but there was no instructions. I had to leave it on so my traveling partner would have a night light, if that's an issue for you bring a sleep mask. We had a nice view of the garden from our room. I was walking by some other rooms when the door was open one day and I could see that they just had a view of concrete building across the street so we locked out on that. The wing of the hotel we were in and the room itself have dark carpeting and dark walls and so it can be very hard to see. Traveling with a visually impaired family member this was definitely a problem and something to keep in mind if you decide to book here. In fact there is a set of steps going down to where our room was and the lighting is poor. Even though the steps aren't steep my mom almost fell due to the poor lighting. I feel like they could easily install some lights along the edges of the step, or paint the edge of the step bright yellow. I actually told them at the front desk about this and the gentleman that I talked to indicated me that he just didn't care. It could be lack of training but I definitely didn't hear "oh I'm so sorry to hear that", or "I'll let someone know to get eyes on that" etc. Honestly! And then of course absolutely no sympathy for the funky smell in the room. I later heard from one of the staff that someone who actually fell on those steps the day before so it's not just us. The parking is a little expensive and you only get one in and out per day but if you're coming from states remember it's in Canadian dollars. We were supposed to have two free drinks from The Kube restaurant included in our package but every time we walked past that restaurant we could smell a strong fragrance and so we were not tempted to eat in the restaurant one bit. The first night walked by there we thought it was someone with perfume but it was consistent every night and then we realized it must be some sort of air freshener for the restaurant? It was just weird. Everyone else we encountered in the hotel were extremely kind and helpful, five stars for all of them! Perhaps the one person I talked to at the front desk that one evening should take lessons from the maintenance personnel, the doorman or the housekeeper.

Let's you sleep very well - staff in the dining room for breakfast we're super friendly and work hard - bathroom has ventilation fan, which is nice - plenty of air-conditioning in the room Cons - the refrigerator did not work at all no matter how hard we tried we had to freeze our produce as it was the only way to keep it fresh - water pressure was lacking when it got busy - very small elevators that fit only really five people. - not sure about the parking situation we did not park, but there does not appear to be an easy accessible lot however they did ask if we wanted to park so I've assumed there's a location to park your car for a fee I'll update this review after we leave if there's any other issues but overall for families and even couples, this is a great location with good amenities. When I mentioned the long line and sudden rain at Schwartz's, they quickly suggested Dunn's instead, and that was a win, plenty of space for my wheelchair and great food. They also pointed me to Reubens for my last night, which ended up being a fantastic meal. My room, 1409, was quiet to the point of feeling almost soundproof. The layout gave me plenty of space to move around comfortably, and the roll-in shower was brilliant, exactly what I needed, with well-placed fixtures. The bed was large and comfortable, lighting was excellent, and there were more than enough outlets to keep everything, including my wheelchair, charged without hassle. If I had to note one thing, the kitchen area was a bit tight and the microwave sat a little high, but it was manageable. Even the laundry room ended up being a highlight. It was conveniently located on the mezzanine, easy to access, and reasonably priced. What really stood out was the staff. One moment in particular, a houseman stepped in without hesitation to help me load the dryer, which was a little high for me. It wasn't a big production, just a simple, thoughtful act that said a lot about how they treat their guests. The little moments really stood out too. I wish they had a mini fridge you could actually use instead of a minibar, there was nowhere to fit in leftovers when we went out to dinner. It is super nice and convenient that they have a concierge to help you with tourism ideas and reservations, but the line can get so long you might have to wait a very long time for your turn to even talk to them. The staff at the desk was also very helpful with suggestions on places, and I got some great ideas of what to do from them, Benoit being a rockstar for recommendations! It's a steep driveway up to the entrance which can be challenging for accessibility and for attempting to order Uber/Lyft. We had a few never find us despite being on the street below. The shower had absolutely no pressure, and the first night had no hot water. By the second night we had a trickle of warm water and just sufficed with that. I thought that kind of water pressure was maybe just a Canadian thing, but as I moved on in my travels no other showers had that problem. Overall, we were well taken care of and had a great experience.

Disappointing stay for a premium hotel…read more The feather pillows were too bulky and uncomfortable, and we could not sleep well. The hotel's pillow menu listed memory foam pillows, but after I requested one from the front desk, it was never delivered. Housekeeping failed to refill the tissue box for two days, the refrigerator had an unknown liquid leak that made all beverages sticky, and the shower hot water took about three minutes to come through. Valet parking was also unavailable, even though it was shown when I booked. After I complained, the manager, Eric, "generously" waived about $15 per day in taxes/fees on my rooms. Given the number of issues, this felt like a very minimal service recovery. Overall, not the standard I expected from Sofitel.
